Faculty across Texas surveyed yearly to determine tracks for
Working Connections IT Faculty Development Institute
Working Connections ’08 Tracks: Online Course Development,
Forensics, Advanced Wireless/Security, DHTI and new A+.
During Fifth Grant Year

Highlights
Working Connections IT Faculty Development Institute
59 educators, five tracks, 4 tracks funded by CTC grant – Online
Course Development, Forensics, Advanced Wireless/Security, DHTI
and new A+.
Speaker presentations: The Neomillenial, BA-IT Degree, Green IT.
Also, lunchtime facilitated discussions.
100 percent rated the institute of high quality (same as last year)
96 percent rated the institute a “Best Practice” (4 percent didn’t rate
this question)
100 percent rated the event a very valuable professional
development experience (2 percent increase over last year)

Working Connections 2008 Impact
6-month follow-up survey conducted to determine
effectiveness of the institute
85 % said they developed technical skills that enhanced
their teaching knowledge and improved their teaching of
their subject matter area.
13 respondents have taught 116 students in 26 sections
Fall 08 in the field they studied at WC
“Overall there is excitement among students. More want
to take the course.”
“I use new tools that were introduced in the Online
Course Development Class to enhance my course.”

Working Connections 2007 Follow-up
18-month follow-up survey conducted to determine
effectiveness of the 2007 institute
Preliminary results: 220 students taught in 22 sections
One participant developed a new Digital Forensics
Technician AAS program based upon the work he did at
WC
“Several of my students have gone on to get jobs
working in companies using Voice over IP.”
“I am able to teach wireless networking to my Cisco
students. It is used in all four semesters in the Discovery
curriculum.”

Working Connections 2006 Follow-up
30-month follow-up survey conducted to determine
effectiveness of the 2006 institute
Preliminary results: 285 students taught in 13 sections
“I used the techniques I learned in that class to write a
series of three hands-on projects hacking into VoIP
connections. Those projects were very popular, and
several of my most advanced students praised them.
New, exciting projects like that keep the students
interested and motivate them to continue their
education.”
“I incorporated a research project on the history of
UNIX,” receiving positive student feedback.

Working Connections 2005 Follow-up
42-month follow-up survey conducted to determine
effectiveness of the 2005 institute
Preliminary results: 115 students taught in 15 sections
80% said they provided new material or updated existing
labs based upon the training they received.
“It helped me develop much better grading rubrics for
cases and ways to present case problems.”
“I continue to encourage students to include
convergence technology courses in their pursuit of a
networking education.”









Hands-on lab activities, taught by instructors developing new
VoIP curriculum for the CTC
80% said they would use what they learned in teaching their next
VoIP class.
