Balance of Beauty

When society is more civilized, human life is developing, their requirements
increasing high, and one of the factors that people interested in today's are beautiful. People
aware of the importance beauty, it also follows that became one of the essentials in life, good
outlooks can make people has many advantages. Beauty can divide two biggest factors which
are inner beauty and outer beauty. Now there are many people just trying to care for outward
beauty who think they will be successful if they have a beautiful outlook. Until now, society
is more concerned about how people look rather than how they are. However beauty is not
only something that pleases the eyes, but also pleases the other senses and the mind. Beauty
appearance is advantageous, it can make them more confidence, but outer beauty is not
enough, an inner quality of a person is also important and valuable. Inner beauty depends on
characteristics such as intelligence, and personalities. The most important thing is that society
needs to balance between inner beauty and outer beauty.
Firstly, to some people, beauty is an outer look of a person – specifically their beauty,
beauty of visible, beauty of physical appearance. People are determining beauty have to
depend on how how people’s eyes look and how the evaluation of surrounding people, the
concept of beauty and beauty rating is actually a very complex problem . People just to be
considered a beauty needs a lot of factors: from the contours of the face, from the balance of
the body to movement and all these factors will depend on each person looked, and
everybody has a benchmark to evaluate the different beauty, there are some think it is
beautiful but the other think it is not. There are no specific and truly definition of beauty,
every age, every generation, every one has different standards and different evaluate of
beauty. Therefore, people could not judge other by their appearance. Edward Iwata is a
journalist and editor in Palo Alto, California is one of an example of Asian person who has to
imposed and discriminated by white people. Iwata had difficulty with mingling in white
society, and then he decided to make the cosmetic surgery to be able have a better look like
white people. He mentions in his stories “Personal Experience: Should I change the Way I
look” at page 17 , paragraph 10 “It’s a taboo subject, but true: many people of color have, at
some point in their youths, imagined themselves as Caucasian, the Nordic or Western
European ideal” this quotes mean at his time, majority youngster’s desire to be looked ideal.
He knew that even though he work very hard, try to get the promotion, however he is Asian
who is not one of the ideal that those people are looking for .He rendered impotent and he
decided have surgery because he think Asian is not having a good appearance and valuable.
He wants to become more like white people or simply not to get discriminate from the white
dominate society in America .He tried to fit with the white society where he could receive a
fully respect if he did the surgery
Where people could get the ideal of beauty come from appearance? Nowadays,
people usually get information from media. The concept of beauty may transmit to humans
easily and quickly by media, newspaper, magazine, phone, television virtual website which
exposing about 3000 advertisements everyday. The ads displays images spread false
messages about beauty, it always represent the the best models who has has fiery body,
beautiful smooth hair. People who watch the advertising featuring slender, attractive actresses
may identify with the appearance of the characters of the show, and they may desire to look
like the glamorous characters they see. It cans negatively affecting human and changing the
ways that they think about themselves. By looking those models, some people start hating
their appearance and it may destroy their own image. There are very few African American,
Asian, Hispanic represent as a model on advertising. White people usually are the most
popular people that being chosen for the models. And that could be the reason show the white
people may be more acceptable than blacks or Asian and Hispanics. It is showing how the
media has negatively impacted to people and it gives them an idea of false beauty. And Iwata
is one the victim that he is not aspires to.
Everybody likes a beauty, actually people always want to look beautiful person and
admire them , and of course, everyone desiderate to be beautiful . However, there are some
people really overestimated the value of beauty from outside and forget the good qualities of
their inner side. That is the reason why there are many discrimination situations occurring
between those people who have and haven’t nice outlook. For example, Lucy Grealy, a
person received the National Magazine Award who got a cancer when she was 9 and it took
the right side of her face. Because of that, she did many surgeries and operations just because
she wants to have the normal and beautiful face like other people .Grealy giving a quote in
her story that “I had literally not looked in a mirror for so long that I quite simply had no clue
as to what I looked like”(62). In this quote, when she receives surgeries, many people look
her with pity and negatively because of her appearance. Every one makes fun of her includes
children. Many people are rude when they see someone who haven’t good appearance, some
lucky person can be considered beautiful themselves, then they think they have right to
discriminate people that they are not beautiful, or at least not as beautiful as them. How
people can not know and care how other people's feelings just because of their own
heartlessness. They do not understand that not everyone in the world was born lucky and
beautiful appearance. Those people believe that the appearance is an important and essential.
A person owns a good-looking appearance makes them more dominant than another
Appearance is plays an important role in how people evaluate another; however outer beauty
could not determine completely a person.
As a human, we are feeling sorry to some situation and some people like Grealy who
discriminated by people and society just because they weren’t having a good appearance.
Even though they have not a good appearance, people should give them the respect. The
society and some people should change their mind about beauty. It is not only the outward
appearance. It is about inner beauty which should be considered essential most especially in
interacting with other people as well as in keeping relationships with others. Besides, inner
beauty leads to greater personal success. For example: an outer beauty person and inner
beauty person are going to take the interview. An outer beauty person has a good appearance,
but if they are not having a good characteristic, they may lose the sympathy by the arrogant
and graceless expressed through talking to the interviewer. However the inner beauty person
has good characteristics, they could show to the company that those characteristic can fit and
apply to the job that they want to do, and those people could be successful, also they could
make their company success as well. Most people tend to focus more on the outer beauty
which made up appearance, skin, hair, and body when they have a first look. Without inner
beauty, outer beauty such as appearance could not be successful in the society. Even though
these day people may think outer beauty is more important than inner beauty, balancing inner
beauty and outer beauty will be better than only outer beauty.
From the quote “For Beyond acculturation, beyond racial identity, is the larger
question of heart and soul”. Iwata tried to send us a message that the balance between outer
and inner beauty should be balanced. No matter where people come from, they could be
judged by society just because they are Asia, African American or Hispanic. Physical
appearance is the only fact to determine a person, it only pleases to the eyes. People who
have inner beauty should deserve more respect from the society even though they haven’t
good appearance.
All in all, it is really difficult to define what beauty is, because the standard of beauty
is evolving throughout the time continuously. Every one has their own definition about
beauty. However, now most of them are more concerned the outer beauty rather than inner
beauty just because the negative effect of media which giving the unrealistic definition about
beauty. The professional and beautiful models are applying to media, and it is giving the very
high standard of beauty to people have been affected who try to copy and evaluate other
people around them. The society should change their mind and ideas about beauty. They
should give the inner beauty more essential. And people have inner and outer beauty should
be considered as truly beautiful person.
