Raymond’s Run Summary Notes
Pg. 10-22
Write a Who, Where, What, and Why note response. Then write a summary of the
short story using the note response. Make sure you use proofread for capitalization,
spelling, punctuation, and sentences that has a subject and a predicate. Copy
EVERYTHING IN BLUE.
Who: characters in the short story
Where: the place of the short story and time
What: give three important events that took place during the short story (cause)
Why: give an explanation of why the events even took place (the effect)

Who:
Hazel (Squeaky): main character, little girl in elementary, Raymond’s sister and
protector, skinny with strawny arms
Raymond: mentally disabled, Hazel’s brother, often picked on, he’s fast
Gretchen: Hazel’s rival, she likes to run also, is the new girl in town
Cynthia: the phony girl that always pretends that she doesn’t work hard
Rosie: the chubby sidekick of Gretchen, was beat up by Hazel before, pick on
Raymond
Mary Louise: use to be friends with Hazel, sidekick of Gretchen, used to get beat up
from girls till Hazel helped her, ungrateful
Mr. Pearson (Mr. Beanstalk): he works during the May Day Celebration, he
suggests that Hazel should lose the race

Basketball court on 134th street in Harlem, New York / in May
What:
*Hazel wins race
*Hazel wants to train Raymond

*Hazel wins the race because she practices everyday / confident
*Hazel wants to train Raymond because he runs fast and she believes she can make
him into a track star

great competition
Summary:
In the short story “Raymond’s Run”, the main character is Hazel. She is very head
strong, a protector of her brother, and a fast runner. The other characters are
Gretchen, Cynthia, Mary Louise, Rosie and Mr. Pearson. Hazel has a conflict with
Gretchen because she is new in town and her new competition. Next, Hazel has a
problem with phony people. That would include Cynthia, Mary Louise, and Rosie.
The short story mostly takes place in Harlem, New York during the May Day
Celebration. Raymond is another character that is important and he is Hazel’s
brother. She has to protect him because he is mentally disabled.
