Act III Standards Focus Flap
The Crucible was written in 1953, a time in American history that has been labeled the
“witch-hunt” of McCarthyism. Many literary analysts claim that Arthur Miller wrote the
play as a deliberate comparison between the mass hysteria of 1692 and the frenzy against
Communism in mid-20th century USA. Answer the following question on the last flap of

Reading McCarthy Article
As a group you will read an article about McCarthyism, the political witch hunt for
Communists that occurred in the 1950’s. As you read, consider the connection to The
Crucible. Jot your notes down on a separate sheet of paper and discuss each section
before writing them down on your worksheet.
• Student A: Read the section out loud while everyone in your group follows
along.
• Student B: Identify key vocab in the section and share them out; as a
group attempt to define the words using only context clues.
• Student C: Summarize/Paraphrase the section that was read and share it
with the group; as a group decide on a common summary for that section.
• Student D: Ask a question about the paragraph that was read; as a group
engage in a discussion about the question and decide on a common
