Eukaryotic cells
Organism made up of
cells that have
membrane-bound
nucleus’ and organelles.
Example: Animal and
plant cells.
Prokaryotic
Organisms that do not
have membrane-bound
nucleus’ or organelles.
Example: Bacteria
Cell Organelles
In eucaryotic cells, the
structures within the
cytoplasm that break
down food, move
water, and store
materials.
Cytoplasm
Gel-like material inside
of the cell membrane
and outside of the
nucleus. Contains a
large amount of water
and chemicals. Most of
the cells organelles or
structures are located
within this.
Analogy: Floor
Chloroplast
Structure in a plant cell
that contains
chlorophyll. Sugar
molecules are made in
chloroplasts via
photosynthesis.
Analogy: Grain, eggs,
flour, etc.
Lysosome
A cytoplasmic
organelle that
contains chemicals
that digests wastes
and worn out cell
parts.
Analogy: Custodian
or janitor
Nuclear envelope
Structure that
surrounds and protects
the nucleus of the cell.
Analogy: Walls of the
school office
Ribosomes
Structures in cell that
makes the proteins.
They are found free in
the cytoplasm or on
the ER.
Analogy: factory or
school.
Endoplasmic Reticulum
A folded membrane that
extends from the nucleus
to the cell membrane. It
transports materials
around the cell.
Analogy: Highway or road
system.
Vacuole
Fluid filled temporary
storage area in the cell.
These are large in plant
cells.
Analogy: Warehouse
or closet.
Mitochondria
Structures in the cell
that change energy
from food into a form
usable by the cell.
Analogy: Battery,
powerhouse.
Nucleolus
Small round structure
in the nucleus of a cell
that helps direct how
proteins are made.
Analogy: Manager of
manufacturing in a
factory.
Cell membrane
The cell membrane is the
selectively permeable
outer boundary of a cell
that allows food and
oxygen to move into it,
and wastes to leave.
Analogy: Locked gate or
door.
Cell Wall
The rigid structure
made of cellulose that
surrounds a plant cell
membrane that
supports and protects
it.
Analogy: Protective
fence or wall.
Golgi Bodies
Stacks of membrane
covered sacs that
package and move
proteins/wastes to the
outside of the cell.
Analogy: UPS or Postal
Service.
Nucleus
Structure inside of a cell
that directs cells
activities, contains
chromatin and
chromosomes.
Analogy: Principle of a
school, CEO of Company,
brain of body.
