7th Grade Science Cell Project
Due Date: Monday, 12/21/15
The cell is vitally important to all living things. Please complete ONE of the
following projects to reinforce our study of cell structure and function.
Option 1: Cell Analogies Collage
Webster defines analogy: “A comparison between two things which are similar in some
respects, but otherwise are different; an explaining of something by comparing it point by point
with something else.”
For this project, you will need: oak tag (poster paper); text with illustrations of cell
structures to refer to; scissors; glue; colored pencils or markers; magazines and/or newspaper ad
sections.
Step 1: Draw a plant or animal cell in colored pencil in the middle of the poster board (Cell
structures must be shaded in with crayon or colored pencils). Include the following structures (if
you are drawing a plant cell, only include the structures that are found in plant cells; if you are
drawing an animal cell, only include structures that are found in animal cells.):
Cell membrane
Chromatin/chromosomes
Mitochondria
Smooth endoplasmic reticulum
Rough endoplasmic reticulum
Vacuole
Lysosome
Golgi bodies
Ribosome
Chloroplast
Nucleolus
Cytoplasm
Nucleus
Centriole
Cell wall
Step 2: Correctly title your poster as a plant cell or an animal cell.
Step 3: Find the function each structure has in the cell. (Use your notes, the textbook, or
the Internet.)
Step 4: Find a newspaper or magazine picture of an everyday object that has a similar
function as each cell structure (you may neatly draw the everyday object if you can’t find a
picture.)
Step 5: Write an analogy to show the similarity between the cell part and the
everyday object. Be sure to explain the reasoning behind your analogies. (For
example: “The Golgi bodies are like a post office because they sort and package
proteins for delivery like a post office packages and sorts mail for delivery.”
Step 6: Glue the pictures of everyday objects at the edges of the poster board. Label the
pictures with your neatly written analogies. Number the analogies and place the same
numbers on the corresponding cell structures you drew.
Step 7: There will be 13 analogies for each type of cell.
OR
Option 2: 3-D Model of a Plant or Animal Cell
Step 1: Make a three dimensional model of a plant or animal cell. The cell must be at least
20 cm wide and 20 cm long.
Step 2: Label the model either a plant or animal cell.
Step 3: Include all of the organelles listed in Option 1 that are appropriate for your type of
cell. Again, it must contain appropriate organelles (13) as listed in Option 1 and the
organelles should be identified with their functions listed; either directly on the
model or typed on a separate piece of paper. (See your notes, the textbook or the
Internet.)
Step 4: Use whatever materials you would like (Styrofoam, wood, clay, etc.) Be creative!
OR
Option 3: Design and Create a T-Shirt With a Picture of the Cell
Step 1: Design and create a T-shirt with a picture of a cell on it.
Step 2: Label the shirt either a plant or animal cell.
Step 3: Include the appropriate organelles (13) as listed in Option 1 and label each
directly on the shirt with their functions listed; either on the front or the back of the
shirt. (See your notes, the textbook or the Internet.)
Step 4: Use fabric paints, puff paints, scraps of fabric, beads, ribbon, or anything else you
would like. You may not find a picture of the cell on the Internet and use iron-on paper to
attach it to a t-shirt; it must be designed by you! Be creative!
For all 3 Options:
1. Place the following information on the lower right front:
 Your first and last name
 Your class period
 Mrs. Anderson
2. Make sure your project is neat and well organized, colorful
(outline in marker, shade with pencils and crayons only),
creative and scientifically accurate!
3. Late projects will lose 10 points per day. (Unexcused absences do not
excuse lateness for this project and 10 points will be deducted for every
day late.
4. Due Date: December 21, 2015
