NOTES ON REGISTRATION OF FOOD PREMISES
Registration of all food business establishments is required by law. Registration allows local authorities to keep an up to
date list of all food premises in their area, so they can be visited at intervals according to risk assessment criteria.
Who needs to register?
Changes to food safety legislation from January 2006 now require all food business operators who produce, process,
distribute or sell food (for profit or not) to register. This now includes previously exempt undertakings e.g. childminders,
small bed and breakfast establishments and food businesses operating less than 5 times in any 5 weeks, all whom were
previously exempt from registration.
Food business operators must now individually register each separate unit of their food business even if situated on the
same site, likewise establishments under the control of different food business operators, e.g. a coffee shop within a
supermarket under the control of a different food business operator will need to register in its own right.
If you operate a mobile food business you should register with the local authority in whose area the vehicle/trailer is
normally kept and/or food stored.
Food establishments subject to approval under regulation 853/2004 e.g. dairies and wholesale meat product producers
do not need to register that part of the business if already subject to approval. If an additional food business is operated
on site, e.g. a farm shop this will need to be registered, as it is not covered by approval.
A business engaged only in primary production activities, e.g. a farm growing vegetables does not need to be registered
as a food business.
Food Business operators should register their food business establishment with Environmental Health at least 28
days before food operations commence.
Food businesses operating before 1 January 2006 will not need to re-register.
To Register
Complete this form and return to Environmental Health at Cannock Chase District Council. There is no fee for
registration.

Particulars and nature of the food business
Confirmation of registration will only be issued, on receipt of a written request from the business operator.
On receipt of a completed application form you are likely to be contacted by Environmental Health to arrange an
inspection or discuss the operation of the food business.
Changes to the business
Under Article 6(2) of regulation 852/2004 Food Business Operators shall inform Environmental Health of any changes to
the food business operator or changes to the activities carried out in relation to food including the closure of an
established. Such changes should be made in writing before changes occur. Notification of a change of operator should
be made by the new occupier in order that the register may be updated.
