Due to the specialty of this field, every single conference contains a exhibition part. Entirely
academic meetings seem really difficult to dig. Also concerning on the regional diversity of the
petroleum resources, every continent holds their very own conference, Europe, Middle-east, Asia,
and America respectively. Considering the current situation, I chose a global conference and an

Categorize papers & fields
The collected papers from AAPG from 2008 to 2009 shows the main frame of this subject
has been built up, except from some minor link within the system, and the specific research
in certain regions. This fact could also be noticed from the distribution of the indexed
journals. The whole industry executes standards accordingly. Based on the current fields
Stanford and UC Berkley presented, Petroleum engineering has the following sub-fields:

Reservoir engineering
A branch of PE, that applies scientific principles to the drainage problems arising during the
development and production of oil and gas reservoirs so as to obtain a high economic recovery. The
working tools of the reservoir engineer are subsurface geology, applied mathematics, and the basic
laws of physics and chemistry governing the behavior of liquid and vapor phases of crude oil,natural
gas, and water in reservoir rock.
Of particular interest to reservoir engineers is generating accurate reserves estimates for use in
financial report. Other job responsibilities include numerical reservoir modeling, production
forecasting, well testing, well drilling and workover planning, economic modeling, and PVT analysis of
reservoir fluids.
Reservoir engineers also play a central role in field development planning, recommending appropriate
and cost effective reservoir depletion schemes such as water flooding or gas injection to maximize
hydrocarbon recovery.
This branch is more concerning on the efficiency and business availability.
Drilling
A totally applied science, a part of PE, specifically contains well-testing, drilling, well-completion,
well-stabilizing, Water-injection and well network planning.
Applied Geophysics & rock mechanics
Mainly support the main course by a series of method, remote sensing, seismic tomography and
imaging, Analysis of repeated seismic data (four-dimensional), Reservoir seismic and rock physics.
The Forefront

Enhanced oil recovery.
On the respect of oil recovery, enhanced oil recovery, AKA tertiary oil recovery, (EOR) is and
for the long term will be the forefront of petroleum recovery, especially for developing
country.

Some of my perception
As far as I concerned, petroleum engineering (PE) is currently a highly developed and well-organized
industry. PE now can be divided into four sub-fields, in the order of sequence. In the process of a
reservoir development, firstly, given the theoretical support, using some certain sensing methods to
explore and locate the reservoir. Then an assessment should be undergoing to make sure the profit
and business availability by consider the combining of all the geological conditions, expected reservoir
volume, and the cost. This part is requires highly integrated knowledge structure, keen business
analysis, a round grasp of the current tech and its advantages and disadvantages, then application of a
whole drilling process, and a series of sequent work, Finally entering the oil-producing phase. The
whole process could be summed into four steps: exploration, reservoir assess, drilling, producing.
What I found intrigued is the assessment and drilling process.
As a highly developed subject, entirely
academic lifestyle, AKA faculty, suits me not. I want be as much as involves in business and application
joint.
As for the forefront of this subject, a great amount of them requires the integration of the several
independent subjects, such as chemistry (for special materials EOR), biology (for microbiology EOR),
computer science (for the software support of Ocean platform and vertical drilling tech). So to think
outside the box the forefront of this subject relies on the development of the listed subjects.
Even
optimistically speaking, there will be an adaption period for each technology respectively. Current
mature applications will be soon overwhelmed in the foreseeable future. Actually the bottleneck of
this field is just the forefront of this field. Conventional methods
A special interest: Petroleum Asset Risk Management
A integrated project specially embedded into the second process of a development of petroleum, as I
said above, I found intrigued in the combining fields of petroleum application and business.
A classical asset lifecycle contains five steps(procedures): appraisal and conceptual analysis—evaluate
alternatives—define selected alternatives—execute—operate, as displayed.
