Course Overview:
The Fourth Year Spanish language course is intended for students who wish to develop their
proficiency in all four language skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. The class will be
conducted primarily in the target language and will be expected that all students attempt to
communicate in the target language at all times. This class will challenge, require discipline and
possibly deepen the interest of the language for all students.
Course Objectives
This course is intended to teach:
 Vacations, celebrations and traditions in Latin America and Spain,
 Medical conditions and health services in Latin America and Spain,
 Use of technology by students by students in Latin America and Spain,
 Preterit and imperfect tenses,
 Impersonal constructions with se,
 Common adverbs and adverbial expressions,
 Household and home life in Latin America and Spain,
 Environment and conservation of nature in Latin America and Spain,
 Life in the cities and towns of Latin America and Spain,
 Formal and informal commands,
 Present subjunctive with verbs of will and influence,
 How to discuss personal fitness, well-being and nutrition in Spanish,
 How discuss professions and the workplace in Spanish,
 How to conduct a job interview in Spanish,
 Past participles as adjectives,
 Present perfect and past perfect tenses,
 Future and conditional tenses,
 Past subjunctive.
Student Learning Outcomes:





Review material learned in previous levels (First, Second and Third Year Spanish),
Prepare for success in language by reinforcing the four skills of language,
Review, correct and use grammar appropriately,
Acquisition of vocabulary based on thematic concepts,
Show proficiency in all skills by discussing literary works,



Read works of authors from different countries and different time periods,
Write a well organized 100 + word essay in the target language,
Introduction to rubrics of the AP exam,
Prepare a portfolio showing work of growth and proficiency in the target language,
Integrate skills to produce a well-written short message and essay,
Integrate skills to produce formal and informal oral pieces,
Comprehend formal and informal usage of target language,
Express ideas with accuracy and fluency,
Interpret messages and creatively discuss a medical condition with a doctor in a role- play

Critically analyze values and ethics in discussing vacations, celebrations and traditional
events in a Spanish-speaking country, (AL 2)
Tell about the system of medical services in a Spanish-speaking country and compare it to
the system in the US,
Discuss student use of computers and technology in a Spanish-speaking country and
compare it to student use in the US,
Use correctly and in context the following grammatical constructions,
Preterit and imperfect tenses,
Impersonal constructions with se,
Common adverbs and adverbial expressions,
Identify and analyze, in English, the history, practices, values, and beliefs associated with
“El día de los muertos” (Day of the Dead) in Mexico and “El día de todos los santos” (All
Saints Day) in other parts of Latin America, (CL 1)
Identify and analyze, in English, some examples of health systems in Latin America, such as
natural and indigenous medicine, and contrast them with medical practices in the United
States, (CL 1)
Interpret messages and creatively employ learned material to discuss his/her home, home
life and chores and compare them to home, home life and chores in a Spanish-speaking
country, (AL 1)
Critically analyze, in English, the underlying values as well as the ethical and historical
context of Latin American attitudes toward the environment, nature and conservation, (AL
2)
Identify and analyze, in English, some Latin American or Spanish cultural practices with
respect to home life and the types of living quarters, (CL1)
Discuss, in English, the conflict between development and ecology in Latin America and how
cultural values and beliefs affect this conflict, (CL1)
Discuss city life in a Spanish-speaking country and contrast it with small-town life in that
country,

Correctly interpret messages and respond creatively in discussing physical fitness and
