PowerPoint on Things Fall Apart
This is an exam grade. You may do this in groups of one or two.
What You Need To Know
1.) You are responsible for the file, so make certain that each member of the group has a
copy of the PowerPoint. You may save on the server under your own file as well as to the
hdrive. You must be sure you save your program multiple times to avoid losing it.
The new Live email program has the new version of PowerPoint. Look under Office.
2.) Your assignment is to create a PowerPoint presentation that you will deliver to the
class in a professional presentation. Everything will not be in text on the PPT. Part of
the presentation will be the notes that you make that you will deliver as you present the
PPT.
3.) Your PowerPoint will contain a variety of images, sounds, music, and words. It
should flow, be unified in color, theme, and format, and use transitions as needed. Any
text should be absolutely perfect with no misspellings or punctuation or grammatical
errors. You should avoid clip art and long passages of text. Do not be boring and do not
read to your audience.
4.) You are encouraged to use your own creative powers in developing this. No two
projects should look alike. You do not have to follow any particular order in your
presentation. Do not just divide up the work with your partner and combine slides. Make
sure your presentation is unified in style. I am looking for independent thought. I want to
see that you can individualize this assignment. You will also be observed for your work
ethic.
5.) On the day of the presentation, you should dress up, be organized, have rehearsed, and
be certain that your program will play. You may bring in your own laptop if desired, or
you may use mine.
Requirements:
Items to cover include the following:
l. Information about Achebe-- his purpose in writing, relevant biographical details, his
view of his culture, and his literary impact and reputation.
2. Background/culture of the Ibo in the late 1800s(time of the book: you may connect
with modern Ibo as well).
3 Impact of the Europeans: what did they want? What did they do? How did they
change the people/culture?
4. Analysis of the character of Okonkwo: What are his motivations, his complexities,
his struggles, his flaws and downfall?
5. The theme(s), style, tone, and three examples of literary devices such as\
metaphor, simile, irony, hyperbole, paradox, or other AP term.
6. Role of women in the book and their beliefs and religion
7. Connection and contrast with Heart of Darkness.
8. The meaning of the title
9. An inclusion of some of the lines from Yeats’ poem with an explanation or
connection.
10. Critical commentary: Your own. You will deal with such things as these: Why is the
book important? What makes it an example of good literature? How successful was
Achebe in breaking the stereotype?
11. A contemporary song that reflects a theme or concern of the book should be
incorporated. Saving this to a MP3 files may work best. (You do not need
to play the entire song.)
12. An attempt to use some video or animation at some point in the presentation.
13. An intro or cover slide with title, name, date, and book title and author
14. A closing slide.
There is no required number of slides. You should cover the requirements. I would
estimate that this could not be done well in fewer than 11 or 12 slides; however, 15+
would be more likely. Do not overload your slides with text. They should be clear and
easy to read.
