Latin I Syllabus 2009-10

Magister Jeremy Hedges jhedges@forsyth.k12.ga.us

(770) 781-2264 ext. 101427

The ECCE ROMANI series is intended “to bring students quickly to the point where they can read the Latin of classical authors with confidence, to develop awareness of the culture of the Romans, its historic significance, and its contemporary relevance, to enhance general language learning techniques and aptitudes, including facility with English, and to develo p students’ full intellect by strengthening skills of deductive and analogous reasoning, interactive learning, comparative analysis and critical assessment.” Students will be introduced to the language through intermediate Latin vocabulary and grammar, as well as through listening and reading comprehension exercises. "The cultural content of the stories focuses on Roman dining in the first half of the book and Roman education in the second. A theme woven in among these major topics is that of the hazards and violence of life in the Roman world. The students will be introduced to a vast and colorful world of ancient Mediterranean and European civilizations that included people of many different cultures and social levels, ranging from slaves to emperors. As students read about the Roman family in the series, they will learn Latin, a language that gave birth to a number of languages that are still used today. In addition, even though the English language is predominately derived from Germanic dialects and not from Latin, as much as sixty percent of English vocabulary comes from Latin. Latin words have come and continue to come into English usage in scientific, medical, and legal terminology. As the students read the Latin stories that will discover the many similarities and differences between Latin and English."

Long term plan:
