Last year’s team did great things on the field and here are some of the impressive statistics from the 2011 season. - 116 LHS Football Players participate among our Varsity-JV-FR teams - The Varsity Offense finished 2nd in the Conference in Team Rushing ahead of powerhouse schools like Westlake, North Point, and Huntingtown. - LHS Varsity scored the highest number of team points in the last decade - LHS Varsity Rushed for the most Team Yards in the last decade - LHS Varsity had our First Homecoming Win in the last decade - 1 All Conference Player (Stephen Stewart) - 8 All County Players We wish to move the bar even higher for the 2012 season as we are returning a high number of varsity players while moving up our JV team who finished with an impressive win over North Point for their final game of the season…who is our first opponent this year. We also believe there are a number of outstanding freshman players who may be able to contribute to the varsity this upcoming season as well. To be prepared physically for the 2012 season and to move the bar even higher for LHS Football, the Winter & Spring workouts are paramount for our success. We need your help in encouraging our returning and potential new players to join us in the weight room from Monday through Thursday from 3:00-4:30. Our Coaching staff is also working hard during the off-season as we will be heading to a number of coaching clinics this Spring and have met on a regular basis planning for the off-season. It has been a personal goal of mine to collect the best staff available to ensure that the young men are given the best instruction possible so they can reach their potential on the field. I have made some decisions to bring on some additional coaches and I am sure those coaches will have a positive impact on your sons. There is no doubt that we will do great things next season. I look forward to seeing everyone help us continue the momentum for the 2012 season! Mike Nines, Head Football Coach E-mail: manines@smcps.org cell Phone: 267 – 981 - 9536 Raider of the Month Calendar Contact Info LEONARDTOWN RAIDERS QB CLUB The Leonardtown QB Club hosted the first Football Team banquet in February where we had a great showing from both the players and family. We sent off a great group of seniors with new team watches and Coach Nines laid out the plans for the upcoming season. We have kicked off several fund raiser plans for the upcoming season to help pay for new equipment for our sons with sponsorships, program ads and the Pampered Chef. By supporting the 2012 Raiders Football program, you will be helping our players have a positive and rewarding experience while focusing on teamwork and learning life lessons, based on the foundation of football. These building blocks enable our players to become more successful in the classroom, on the Field and in their future careers. They will leave our program as proud alumni of Leonardtown High School. The St Mary’s School Board will vote on April 11 to authorized individual schools to solicit and accept donations from the community for direct application to the athletic facilities/programs. We will be having several fundraisers to help lower the costs of the Gettysburg Camp this summer. In hopes of accomplishing this all profits will go to the team. First we will be having a car wash on Saturday April 14 at the Wendy’s in Leonardtown starting at 10:00am. We will need players to come out and help wash vehicles and hold up signs. Second is the Outback Lunch on Saturday April 21, from 11:00am till 1:00pm. Costs for tickets are $15.00 in advance and $20.00 at the door. Menu will be: Buffet style with Chicken, Steak, Rice, Caesar Salad, Bread and drinks (tea, coffee, and soda). I will be selling tickets at the school on March 29, from about 4:00pm till 5:00pm and on April 10th and 11th same time 4:00pm till 5:00pm. For more information contact Becky Mays, (maysb@smhd.com) or 240-925-2678. We hold our monthly meeting on the 2nd Tuesday of every month with the next meeting scheduled for 9 April at 6:00pm. Matt Dorf President, Leonardtown Raiders Quarterback Club E-mail: Mathisd58@md.metrocast.net POWDER PUFF FOOTBALL (MAY 4) The football team is hosting a powder puff game (girls play football and boys cheerlead). This is a fundraiser for the football team to help pay for some of the big expenses that occurred during the season (team tunnel, helmet, etc). We will also be donating a portion of the proceeds to Relay for Life. This is another way we can give back to the great community of Leonardtown. I need all football players to sign up to be cheerleaders, chain crew, and field crew. Many have already signed up, but the more that do the easier the jobs will become. I also need parents to volunteer to work the ticket booth, sell 50/50 tickets, and work the concession stand. This is an easy way for us to raise approximately $5000. The school is already buzzing about it and I expect a huge turnout. This is another way to increase school spirit and show the students that we care for everyone that supports us throughout our season. The games will all be held on May 4 beginning at 7 p.m. with the freshmen v. seniors, followed by the juniors v. sophomores, and then the championship game of the two winners. It will be run just like a normal football game except it will be flag and not tackle. Please let me know if you can help. I think this will be a great way to have a trial run of how we will be running our concession stand next year. I appreciate your help with this and I know it will be a huge success. WINTER / SPRING WORKOUTS Seth McPherson (Senior) earns first Team Black Shirt To encourage each player to reach their maximum potential, we have broken out player goals by their selected position where they can strive to reach their goal and earning a particular Color T-shirt with White-Grey-Blue-Black. Seth McPherson (Sr) earned a Black T-shirt last week by maximizing his reps on the Bench Press. We have 8 players who have earned Blue T-shirts while the remaining are working hard to increase their maximum reps. Our lifting regiment is designed for maximum performance at combines. The players are training very hard and we expect great performances by the boys at the combines. Team Weight room days & hours are Mon-Tues-Wed-Thur from 3:00-4:30pm. Mr. Sparshott will conduct a special workout for those players who are participating in Spring Sports from 5:00-6:00pm. It gets each player’s name and statistics to colleges across the country and it also allows the players to see how they personally measure up to other players in Maryland. I have high hopes for all players who have been working hard in the weight room doing very well at this combine. We will be leaving the LHS parking lot at 6 a.m. for anyone needing a ride or wanting to caravan to the combine together. Please see Coach Nines if you need a ride to the combine. We will be stopping on the way back for dinner when the combine is complete. It is also another way for players to see how they measure up to other SMAC players and build quality relationships with those players. It is HIGHLY ENCOURAGED that you make sure you attend this camp. UNIV OF MARYLAND FOOTBALL CLINICS The Univ of Maryland one-day camps are designed to help and evaluate the players in front of a dozen different college coaches from around the Mid-Atlantic region. The QB club is fundraising for this event (to pay for transportation and lowering the cost of $300 per player). See the letter from the QB Club President for more details. HUDL We now currently have great online software called Hudl. This software allows the coaches to put game film online so that players can access it directly from their computers at home. This software allows players to see our games (and critique themselves) and see opponent’s games (scout who they will be playing against). It also allows the coaches to put practice film online as well. The software also allows players to make their own highlight tapes, which can be a very expensive aspect to the college recruiting process. Each player needs to register for their own password. The only way to register is for you to email me directly with your email so that I can send you a link to sign up for hudl. It is very important that all players have an account because we will be using this exclusively during the season. Please email me so I can send you the link to sign up. Hudl is located at: www.hudl.com LHS RAIDERS FOOTBALL TEAM EQUIPMENT ON-LINE SHOPPING MALL The LHS Raiders will be offering team apparel on line through Marlow Sports. We have negotiated a team discount for a number of items that are less expensive than at the local sporting good stores. This discount is substantial and I am very happy to get these items cheaper than any other place we could go. Each player will be required to purchase a ‘spirit pack’ before the start of the season with mandatory items. Those mandatory items will be game socks, mouth piece, practice jersey, equipment bag, t-shirt, and shorts. All of these items will be able to be ordered online through the team store. Also there will be additional items that can be purchased such as girdles (HIGHLY ENCOURAGED THAT YOU BUY THESE), cleats, gloves, sweatshirts, warm up suits, etc. These items will also be available through the online team store. The team store will be up and running before May and I will forward you additional information as to how to purchase items in the online store. All orders for the mandatory spirit pack will be due in June (so that we can receive them prior to attending the Gettysburg Camp in July) For more information about Marlow Sports, check them out online at www.marlowsports.com FUTURE RAIDERS Leonardtown High School Football has partnered with the Leonardtown Wildcats youth football program. This is a monumental partnership that will help the current program tremendously in future years. Last season I worked directly with the Pax River Raiders 8th grade unlimited team. I worked with their coaches and players. That team won the Maryland State title and sent 3 players to participate in the Underarmour All-American Game. They ran the exact same offense that we run and had tremendous success with it. We have decided to work with the Leonardtown Wildcats because they are going to run our system throughout their program and because almost every player in their program will be coming to LHS in the future. I have been meeting regularly with the Wildcat youth coaches and have been teaching them our offensive system. The Wildcats will be running our system throughout ALL of their weight divisions. That is a huge deal! That means that players attending LHS in the future will have the opportunity to play in the same system from the time they are 6 until the time they are 18! The Wildcats have been very gracious and accepted the Leonardtown Raiders program as their own. This will pay huge dividends in the coming years and I can not wait to see the players become experts in our system before they even reach high school. I have no doubt that the Wildcats program will do a superb job of training the players to become amazing football players before they even enter 9th grade. It is imperative that if you have younger children that are interested in playing football for LHS that they play for the Leonardtown Wildcats. It will not help them very much if they play for any other program. Playing for the Wildcats will ensure they learn our system and give another purpose to the players as they become better and approach high school age. The upper levels of the program (6th through 8th graders) will be run like a middle school program with all players playing by age level and not by weight class. This will help mold them as a team and set them up for as much success as possible once they enter 9th grade. The Wildcat coaches will be working with the LHS Football players throughout the summer to install our plays. The Wildcats will also be hosting a variety of camps and clinics for the high school players that will teach them our offensive system. I am very excited about these opportunities. I am so very happy we have this new partnership and I expect great things as a result! To register to play or to find out more information about the Wildcats visit them online at: http://www.leonardtownwildcats.net/ RAIDER OF THE MONTH The Raider of the month will be a tribute to a current football player who has gone above and beyond in the weight room, community, and classroom. This will be a prestigious award and the recipient will be presented with a customized t-shirt. This award will be given every month (except during football season), and their name will be added to a plaque that will hang in Coach Nines’ room. This month’s recipient is Darin Winters. Darin is currently a junior and has been a constant force in the weight room. Most importantly because of his work and leadership he was named a team Captain for the 2012 Football Season. There was no doubt whatsoever that he deserves this honor. His effort from last season has translated directly to his dedication to himself and his teammates in the weight room. Darin was a model for wide receiver play last season by executing every block and play we asked him to do. His dedication in the weight room throughout the off-season has brought more players into the weight room and his leadership while in the weight room has encouraged great gains by all players. Darin also recently made the honor roll with a 3.5 GPA and hopes to play football in college. He has taken the necessary steps to ensure he will get into a good school (academically) and that football will be an option (with his dedication in the weight room). I am extremely proud of Darin as he has come from being a good JV player, to an impact varsity player, and eventually earning a captaincy for our team. He is the model of effort and dedication. We expect great things from him next season. I could not be happier he is a part of our team. Congratulations Darin!
