Anatomy Review Sheet: Blood
Blood consists of two major components: Plasma and Formed Elements
The formed elements consist of 3 major components:
Erythrocytes, Leukocytes and Thrombocytes
How can you remember all this, you ask? Well, it turns out that cells are named this for
a reason. Believe it or not, these cells aren’t named these big long annoying words just
to confuse you.

Put ‘em all together and what do you get?
Erythrocyte= red blood cell
Leukocyte= white blood cell

The Erythocytes



What shape are they?
Do they lack anything important?
What is their function?

What makes them red?
What is this scraggly mess?
None other than….
HEMOGLOBIN


Where are the heme groups?
o How many hemes are in one hemoglobin molecule?
o What is their function?
o What makes this particular function possibly?
Where are the protein groups?
o What are these protein groups called?
 What is their function?
This mess is none other than carbonic anhydrase
You don’t have to know what it looks like.
Just know what it does!


What role does it perform?
 Why is it important?
If we didn’t have it in our blood, what would (or wouldn’t) happen?
White Blood Cells:
LEUKOCYTES
What major function do white blood cells have in our body??
White blood cells are classified as either agranular or granular.
An agranular WBC is simply called an Agranulocyte
A granular WBC is simply called a Granulocyte
Granulocytes

Name 3 characteristics of Granulocytes
There are 3 different type of granulocytes: neutrophils, eosinophils and basophils.
Agranulocytes
 Name 3 characteristics of agranulocytes
There are 2 different types of agranulocytes: lymphocytes and monocytes
1. Neutrophils
a. Granulocyte or Agranulocyte?
b. They are the most numerous WBC
c. They can be seen in the form of pus (after they have died).
d. Phagocytes or not?
2. Basophils
a. Granulocyte or Agranulocyte?
b. They have an important function in histamine production
c. How numerous are they?
d. Phagocytes or not?
3. Eosinophils
a. Granulocyte or Agranulocyte?
b. Where are they found?
c. What important function do they have?
d. Phagocytes or not?
4. Lymphocytes
a. Granulocyte or Agranulocyte?
b. What are the two types of lymphocytes?
5. Monocytes
a. Granulocyte or Agranulocyte?
b. The biggest, baddest phagocyte around!
