Atomic Bomb Debate-Affirmative
Many people can look at the dropping of the atomic bomb as both a good and a
bad thing. There are great reasons for each side and many people go back and forth on
the issue. According to Bill Dietrich, Seattle Times Staff reporter, there are many
reasons for the use of the bomb. The main reasons for using the atomic bomb deal with
saving American lives. The Japanese were not going to give up and the two cities that
were bombed would have been destroyed by firearm anyway. In addition to that, the
number of casualties was decreased by the bombing compared to what the body count
would have been if there had been all out war. These are two strong points that suggest
that the president made the right decision in choosing to drop the atomic bomb.
According to Hamby, the United States historical record shows that the Japanese
were not going to surrender anytime soon and measures had to be taken to save as many
American lives as possible. It was not widely known, but Japan was in no way ready to
surrender to American forces. America wanted unconditional surrender and that is
exactly what we got. We had gotten unconditional surrender from Germany and that is
all that America would settle for from that point on.
According to Sato's intercepted cables from Tokyo he was left with the
impression that Japan, unwilling to surrender, was preparing to wage a bitter, suicidal
resistance that might last for months if the nation was unable to get the terms it wanted.
America had the proof that it wanted to drop the bomb. Japan was a very strong country
and was willing to do anything to protect its people. America saw that and determined
that we would lose many people in a war with them; something had to be done to control
the lose of lives.
