FIRO-B® Team Building Workshop
Cardiac Rehabilitation Team, Aneurin Bevan Health Board
Workshop Evaluation Summary
Date: 10th September 2010
1. The things I have learnt from today’s workshop are:


























Teams are important and conflict is acceptable and to be expected.
The main thing is to keep the main thing the main thing.
The importance of team working.
Meaning of specific words/language in relation to team working.
Awareness of others/self’s needs/expectations.
Managers and seniors need to look at themselves more and appreciate their team and
recognise qualities.
The three areas of human interaction and interpersonal needs – FIRO-B.
Johari Window, how to balance 12 nails, that I am included in team by all members.
Johari Windows. Dysfunctional team info.
Concentrate on strengths rather than trying to address weaknesses.
Judge ourselves by our intentions and others by their behaviours. This is an
interesting statement – thought provoking.
Even though I can’t change others effect on me, I can alter my response to those
influences.
The main thing is – the client. Everybody’s skills and thoughts are important, not to
focus on weakness and how to improve, but focus on strengths.
Understanding more about my control and others.
Awareness of my behaviour and the behaviour of others.
All team members are valuable and contribute. Conflict is healthy and important
among the team.
To be aware of my behaviour in the team and to respect others’ values/principles.
The importance for the team keeping the main thing – the main thing and maintaining
a team approach to do so.
The importance of each member of my team.
We can change our behaviour, there’s a lot of good in our team.
We can change.
How my behaviour can be interrupted by others.
Perhaps others do not perceive me as I do myself.
A greater awareness of team work and our interpersonal needs.
The importance of team working to achieve the main thing. Reflection on how
individuals within the team use their behaviours to enhance/obstruct from the team’s
purpose.
We are all essential to the team regardless of titles and what we do within the team.



How to work more effectively as a team. That sometimes we must accept change and
adapt in order to become more efficient and successful.
How much the team as a whole have progressed in terms of interaction
/communicating during the last 5yrs.
That I am fortunate to be working in a very supportive team who appreciate one
another’s contributions. A lot about team dynamics especially interpersonal
dimensions.
2. The most important thing I have learnt about myself is:



























I express low affection but expect medium affection back.
I need to think about my own behaviour and how this affects others.
Happy to be ‘medium’ in my scores. And if change is not done in 24hrs, probably not
get done.
Perception of myself in relation to the FIRO-B words/terms/ideas.
Johari Window analysis.
I’m not always heard but I knew that anyway!
I’m needy!
Just because I want to receive affection, inclusion etc. other team members may not
naturally express it – doesn’t mean I’ve done anything wrong.
More understanding of my behavioural tendencies.
A more defined understanding about my behaviour and how others influence me.
My individual strengths are important in order for the team to be successful;
likewise everybody else’s strength.
To excel at things that I enjoy.
I need to explore my personality further and my leadership styles.
I need to address issues as they arise. I need to balance my role with those of other
team members. Don’t give my valuable time so freely.
Being aware of how my behaviour impacts upon other members of the team and
thinking how this changes the team dynamics at times.
I am sometimes not honest enough. What I thought of as my weaknesses aren’t
necessarily so.
I do judge others by their behaviour whereas I judge myself by my intentions.
I can be extremely negative if not in the right frame of mind.
More understanding about how the way I am can be interrupted by others.
I have needs in team and that I need to work on areas in how I am and are perceived.
Things that I previously thought were weaknesses are not necessarily so.
That my weaknesses are the things that I am less good at doing – think about them
less negatively.
I have many different faces i.e. one for work, one for home, one for friends.
That I should be more aware of my role as part of my team.
How more relaxed I am about my role and accepting of others.
I have learnt that I am less controlling than I thought I was, and are happy for
others to have more control to create warm and closeness within the group.
It is me who needs to change rather than try and change the behaviour in others.
3. My actions from today’s workshop are:


























Evaluate other peoples FIRO-B areas so can better interact with them, avoiding
potential conflict.
Continue to work in a team.
To be mindful of my behaviour and actions.
More communication, promoting an understanding of roles.
Stop doing – repetitive tasks. Doing more – patient contact.
Work on areas of improvement.
Make sure my voice is heard, even when not asked.
To think about behaviour in others and why they behave this way.
To practice the 3 areas of FIRO-B.
To be more mindful of my behaviour patterns and try not to let other team members
control or influence my actions to my detriment.
Not to need as much reassurance.
To take back to the workplace more about inclusion, control, affection and
understanding more about the team.
To further explore this concept by using website, further reading.
Discuss issues that concern me. Step back and focus on.
I would like to do the FIRO-B behaviour evaluation as a team. I think it would help to
understand our differences as people and hopefully work and communicate better as
a team.
To be more positive, be more accepting of changes.
To try to be less negative.
To realise how people can see me and my reactions.
To explore dynamics within the small team that I lead. To look at my relationships
and others in small and in wider teams.
Consider other people’s points of view rather than focusing on my own and assuming
I’m correct.
Collate the post-it info. Act on the FIRO-B table within each team in terms of
challenging expectations and accepting each other.
To focus in improving my part as a team member. Gaining feedback from others as to
how they perceive me and the way I work.
To discuss my scores with other members of my team.
To focus on my own strengths, to ensure the team progress.
To get out of the ‘white water’ and find calm to allow creativity in thought processes.
To appreciate that personality may not change but behaviour can be influenced.
To be more mindful of others behaviour, to appreciate others more, to disagree
without being disagreeable.
4. The workshop could have been improved if:






We had worked with our individual teams – not as a Trust wide team as there are
some individuals we never have contact with on a yearly basis except at team building
days.
Could not be improved.
Increased activity, team changing.
More team tasks, less talk.
If the FIRO-B Exercise was done on each other – not just on self.
More on the Johari Window.


















There were more functional tasks i.e. nail activities etc. If the day was more specific
with one central aim and outcomes.
Less emphasis on background, introduce FIRO-B areas sooner.
Myers Briggs personality assessment would have been beneficial so that each
member of the team understands their personality traits.
Tea breaks and lunch breaks more known earlier in the day. Room size too small.
To finalise we could have discussed as a Gwent wide team or individual teams what we
are going to do now.
I could have found out more about my other team members perceptions of me (even
if I have to go home crying)
More explanation about the expressed and wanted exercise.
Aimed at whole team rather than a lot about leadership.
Quieter people encouraged to give their views more.
2 suggestions – interact more with people to your left especially if you’re placed to
the right, felt as if left out on door side of room, pass sheets out on both sides of
room and right side had longer to see sheets.
Tea and coffee needed more organising.
We worked together in smaller teams.
We had opportunity to get together in our normal teams to discuss how team
dynamics could be improved.
Fewer anecdote accounts. Would have liked more group work/discussion.
More practical activities.
I wondered if outcomes would have been different if manager was not present. Does
this vary with other settings and disciplines?
Change in seating within the morning.
Don’t think it could have been improved – enjoyable as it was.
5. The things I enjoyed most about today’s workshop were:

















Networking with other teams across ABHB.
Interaction with colleagues.
Nails exercise.
Team tasks – fun. Team/Individual participation.
Task and group work.
The practical tasks.
The challenges.
Nail activity.
Learning more about myself – it’s okay that I don’t want to have control over
everything but I may need to adjust this if faced with someone who wants to give me
control.
Activity based workshops.
Mixing with other members of the team I don’t work with so often.
Role play.
Team work and learning more about behaviour and change.
Enjoyed listening and felt it was thought provoking.
The question swapping. I am not confident to talk to people I don’t know so this helps.
Both the power point and practical sessions were delivered well, with added open
approach for questions and thoughts from the audience.
You two guys and your style of deliverance. The interaction with team members. The
positive vibe!








Being together as the whole team. More aware of my responsibilities when a
challenging situation occurs.
Evaluating myself.
Meeting up with and working with other people within the team that I don’t usually
see.
Interactive activities.
How welcome the course facilitators made us. Having time to catch up with colleagues
and undertake group work with people from different areas.
Meeting members of the other teams. Taking time out to reflect on team
performance.
The theories/concept behind the behaviours we portray individually and as part of a
team.
The practical problem solving. Some of the quotes! The discussions within groups.
Group interaction. Lucille Ball Video!
Being together as a team. I personally liked having manger present so that we have a
shared vision for the future.
It was good to have dedicated time out to learn, discuss issues, very useful ideas and
concepts. Stimulating workshop.

Good.
Informal and relaxed.
OK.
Very good for set topics.
Balanced – 2 different personality styles evident.
Very good as usual.
Suitable and effective.
Informative.
Energetic but a little repetitive and stating the obvious.
Friendly, smiley and motivational.
Good. Maybe a few too many stories.
Excellent, thought provoking for me as an individual.
Lengthy, reliant on authors/books could have involved group/teams to define, share
their experiences, more two-way approach.
Excellent. Very approachable and honest.
Good.
Wicked! Well done guys.
Very good. Relaxed and welcoming.
Good – different styles incorporated.
Informal, laid back which was good. Relaxed atmosphere.
Generally very good and effective.
Good.
Well organised. A little distracting when Grant was interjecting during Ian’s
discussion.
Excellent, very thought provoking.
Enjoyed the humours and the stories. Easy going and not too stressful for my brain.
Comfortable environment created – felt safe.
Enjoyable, interesting and fun.

presentations.

6 hours went very fast. My/our attention was very well held.
Would have appreciated knowing what my FIRO-B score is to compare with what I
predicted.
Thank you!
Useful interesting website/books introduced. Not sure how I can use this concept in
my smaller team without a skilled facilitator.
Would be useful to meet again to see how we can take things forward.
I found the whole day very ‘woolly’ and generic i.e. a lot of the info was common sense
and was made to seem more complicated than it actually was.
A very worthwhile workshop – took a lot from it.
Thank you.
Would have liked more time with the expressed and wanted exercise.
Enjoyed it. A lot to take in and understand so will look at website.
Could this workshop have add-on workshops in the future to look at specific teams?
Great team time out.
Thoroughly enjoyable day.
Very good, held the attention of a large group – feels positive.
Excellent day. Has created many thoughts/theories to reflect on.
