5 main functions of bone
Production of blood cells
The blood cells are made in the bone marrow of the bone by stem cells. The
bone marrow is a soft and spongy part of the bone and its in the middle of the
bone. To keep healthy you need to have plenty of blood marrow to make fresh
blood cells. The large flat bones are the bones that produce the most blood
cells; these are the breast bone and the pelvis.
Protection
Bones protect the body’s vital internal organs, they provide a cage to prevent
them being damaged. They bones within the skull protect the brain and the
vertebrae protects the spinal cord. The majority of the bodies bone protect
organs and muscles.
Support/ structure
The skeleton is classed as the frame work of the body. It supports all the soft
tissue of the body; it also gives the muscles somewhere to attach themselves.
Movement
Muscles are attached to the bones, so the bones assist the muscles in moving
the body. So when the muscles contract they make the bones move.
Storage of minerals
Bone store minerals like calcium and phosphorus. The bone releases the
minerals into the blood when the body needs it.
