ALA-SAA Joint Committee Meeting

Introduction of members and visitors
2. The ALA co-chair of the Joint Committee has yet to be appointed. Charlotte
Brown (SAA co-chair) agreed to chair the meeting.
3. Roster of Jt. Committee members was routed for revisions/updates.

Appointment of ALA co-chair
Brown will email Jt. Committee members and friends to solicit nominations for
ALA co-chair. Brown will forward nominations to the ALA President (cc: Karen
Muller, ALA liaison) for appointment.

Expansion of Jt. Committee membership (Old Business)
Joyce Ray re-distributed her proposed revision of the Jt. Committee's mission
statement to include museum professionals. According to Ray, Bob Martin/IMLS is
supportive of this action. The committee agreed to consult with the SAA Museum
Archives section in order to obtain their input on this topic. Ray offered to
contact the Association of American Museums (AAM) as a follow-up to Kiesling's
recent letter to the AAM.

Suggested topics (in order of preference):
A. Personally Identifiable Information (PII), circulation records/reading
room logs: research value, privacy issues, security issues (theft),
records management requirements for destruction; Peter Graham/Syracuse
Univ. to moderate panel discussion
B. interoperability: S. Koutsky offered to coordinate development of
program; possible co-sponsors: LITA/Technical Issues for Digital
Libraries, SAA, PARS; use case study approach, e.g. bib record linked to
finding aids linked to content, etc.
C. collaboration between archives, libraries, museums: past and current
practices; Bob Martin chair panel dicussion
D. authority work/thesauri construction: required by finding aids,
libraries, museums; co-sponsored by ALCTS, SAA, AAM, RBMS
It was suggested that the Jt. Committee maintain an ongoing list of session
proposal topics:
- Diversity with ALA & SAA
RBMS is concerned with lack of "people of color" within RBMS;
are there other ALA-SAA units experiencing the same concern?
