and graphics). Can you see a difference in quality? Can you tell which document came from which kind
of printer? Which differences are important enough to guide your choice of printer?
View the same picture on different computer monitors (preferably at the same time). Do you see a
difference? What is causing this difference?
View the same picture on a computer at difference resolutions and different color depths. Which do you
find most comfortable for the size of the monitor? Try photos and clipart as well as text documents.
Print a color document on a color printer. Compare the printout with the picture on the monitor. How
close are they in color? What explains the differences?
Print several colored pictures on a black and white printer, include a photo with no strong contrast
between light and dark areas. Can you guess which ones will be reasonably clear and which will look

Take apart a bad floppy disk of each size. What parts do you find?
Acquire a bad hard disk and take the cover off. (This is not usually easy to remove!) Inspect the metal
platters. Do you see damage from the read/write head gouging the platter? (Good platters should be
completely free of marks.) What other kinds of damage might kill the drive?
Why do we use large hard disks now when just a few years ago floppies were good enough for
everyone?

Visit a business that has a network and observe work being done across the network. Are they using a
file server? a client server? a main frame with terminals?
Is your school networked? If so, interview someone who manages the network about its configuration,
number of nodes, cost to install, cost to maintain, advantages to being networked. If your school is not
networked, what could be done if it were networked that can’t be done now, or can’t be done as easily?
Inspect both internal and external modems and see them in operation. Can you find where the phone

Discuss reasons people want their own computer. What would people in your age group say? Is this
