TENNIS CARNIVAL RULES AND CONDITIONS (Use as a guide for Metro Exchanges)
CARNIVALS AND EXCHANGES
1.
Singles: 6 games, no advantage. (Sudden death at deuce until 5 all). Tie Breaker to be played at 5
All
2.
Doubles: 6 games, no advantage. (Sudden death at deuce until 5 all). Tie Breaker to be played at 5
All.

Match:

Winner of Match will be decided:
(a) On sets won
(b) Should sets be equal then games won.

Winner of Match will be decided:
(a) On matches won
(b) Should more than one team finish with equal points then joint winners will be declared and
percentages will not be used to determine outright winners.

Tie Breaker:
The first player to win 7 points or if the score becomes 6 all then the first player to lead by 2 points eg.

The player who was due to serve in the eleventh games serves the first point only from the forehand
side. At the conclusion of the first point the opponent then serves the next two points. The first of these
points must be served from the backhand side of the court. The person beginning the tie breaker
serves one point thereafter each player will serve two points. Ends are to be changed at 6, 12 and 18
points.

Match Sheets: To be filled in prior to commencement of each match and handed to Carnival
Manager at the conclusion of the match.

Protests (If any) are to be in writing to the Carnival Manager by 12.30pm. for the am matches and 4pm
for the pm matches on the days of the game. Only Managers may register a protest

Boys are to play boys and girls to play girls.
All children to play a single and a double each match.
Matches begin at 9.00 am. and conclude 3.30 pm. There is no set lunch break.
10. Shoes: As we will be playing matches on the synthetic courts at these venues, special attention must
be given to footwear. We have been advised that any normal tennis shoe is acceptable BUT NO ripple
soled sneakers. No black soled shoes for Peake Reserve and Goodwood Hardcourts.
11. Court Allocation: Will be made by the Carnival Manager each day.
12. Hit up Times:
That a maximum of two minutes per match be allowed. This is to enable matches to
finish on time and allow children to return to host schools on time.
13. Sudden Death: When the score is deuce the receiver shall decide the side of play. The winner of the
next point (ie. the seventh) is the winner of the game. There is no advantage.
14. Coaching of Teams: While encouragement is allowable, no coaching is allowed while a match is in
progress.
15. Umpiring: Each match is to be jointly umpired by one member of each team. One person to be the
umpire and the other to be the linesperson.

16. Disputed Calls: If both the umpire and linesperson are in agreement on a decision that decision can
not be changed or over-ruled. If both the umpire and the linesperson can not agree then play the point
again (with two serves).
17. Please Note:
The only children allowed in court area are those children playing and those umpiring.
18. Both boys and girls are to be ranked in order of playing ability 1-6 and may move up or down 1 place
per singles match. Singles rankings do not determine doubles combinations. Movement of players
forming double combinations are also restricted to movement of one place up or down per match. This
applies even if new doubles combinations are formed.
Doubles The first doubles must include No.1 and either 2 or 3.
The third doubles must include No. 6 and either 4 or 5.
19. Doubles to be played before singles.
20. Foot faults – Warnings are to be given before calling. Managers who will then decide whether a child is
foot faulting or not.
ADDITIONAL NOTES FOR METRO EXCHANGES
21. The length of sets may vary depending on:
- allocated time for play
- number of courts available
- scoring system used (eg. Normal scoring, sudden death, fast tennis).
22. Sets may be played to 4, 6 or 9 games (pro-set) depending on match composition.
23. The following types of matches may be incorporated into an Exchange in addition to singles and
doubles
(single-sex):
- Mixed doubles
- Singles tournament (Round robin or Knockout)
- Doubles tournament (Round robin or Knockout)
- Mixed team doubles
- Whistle tournament
This is not an exhaustive list and other formats may be negotiated between managers.
24. Some coaching / training drills may be incorporated into the Exchange program.
25. Managers may elect to have players umpire their own matches.
