Position Description
THE SCHOOL OF ECONOMICS AND FINANCE
The School of Economics and Finance was formed in 1998 as a result of the
amalgamation of the School of Economics and Finance with the economics and finance
sections of VET/TAFE Business (RMIT) and has strong research and teaching interests in
economics, finance and financial planning. The School is responsible for all of the
economics, statistics and corporate finance courses offered in RMIT Business, and as the
largest service teaching School at RMIT provides, in addition, economics, corporate
finance and statistics teaching to other faculties in the University. It also provides such
teaching in the various programs offered by the Faculty in Singapore, Malaysia and Hong
Kong.
A staff development program has been initiated by the School to assist staff with research
activities and the upgrading of qualifications. Presentation of academic papers at
workshops and seminars is strongly encouraged and supported; the School has its own set
of working papers and receives a comprehensive set of working papers from other
universities.
The School offers two undergraduate degrees - the Bachelor of Business (Economics and
Finance) which began in 1989 and the Bachelor of Business (Financial Planning) which
began in 1996. It also offers a Masters degree in Finance which commenced in 1991 and
a Masters in Financial Planning which commenced in 1999.
The Bachelor of Business (Economics and Finance) has generated a strong demand for
places. The success of the program is based upon two factors:
1.
2.
The structure of the program, which combines the advantages of a general business
program (comprehensive basic economics, statistics, accounting, computing skills
and business law) with a strong specialisation in finance, especially corporate
finance, treasury operations, money and banking and international finance.
A commitment to provide both strong academic rigour and relevant industry
experience.
The Economics and Finance degree is distinctive to the extent that it is more finance
industry-focused and finance discipline-orientated than other economics degrees.
Students must complete an integrated sequence of theoretical and practical finance units.
The industry focus of the degree goes beyond the banking industry, and concentrates more
upon analytical courses which can be applied across the corporate sector as a whole.
From 1996 the School has offered Australia’s first degree program targeted to meet the
needs of the Financial Planning industry. The Financial Planning degree is a broad
Bachelor of Business degree which aims to produce graduates with a broad understanding
of modern business and the flexibility to make a career inside and outside the Financial
Planning sector. The program provides substantial practical, analytical and theoretical
knowledge of the specialist disciplines relevant to a career in Financial Planning. The
program also contains five elective courses which enable students to pursue further
specialisation.
Since 1998, the School has offered a specialisation of financial planning courses across
Australia by distance learning through Open Learning Australia. This has enabled
distance students to complete the full Bachelor of Business (Financial Planning) through

Open Learning Australia by allowing them to take non-financial planning business
courses from universities across Australia who offer comparable Open Learning courses.
Graduates of the Financial Planning degree will be eligible to enter the Certified Financial
Planner Program for professional accreditation of the Financial Planning Association of
Australia with the award of Certified Financial Planner (CFP). Further professional
accreditation from bodies such as the ASCPA, ICA and Australian Institute of Bankers
will depend on the combination of electives chosen.
The Master of Finance course is currently being offered in Singapore, Malaysia and Hong
Kong as well as Australia. In 2001 over 350 students were enrolled in the School’s
Masters programs. The Master of Finance degree has a very strong quantitative
component as well as emphasising Asian capital markets and highlighting aspects of
financial engineering. The Faculty of Business has offered a post-graduate program in
finance since 1985. The School is also attracting a growing number of Masters by
research and PhD candidates.
TAFE - VET
Eight teachers and two administration officers currently co-ordinate the design,
development and implementation of the School’s TAFE Programs. The TAFE sector
endeavours to provide programs which cater to the needs of a variety of clients, ranging
from school leavers to graduates. The School of Economics and Finance currently offers
two main TAFE programs – The Diploma of Business (Banking and Finance), and The
Diploma of Business (General Insurance).
The Diploma of Business (Banking and Finance) provides students with a detailed
understanding of the banking industry, and the practical skills to work therein.
Incorporating units from the schools of Marketing and Accountancy, students develop a
thorough range of basic skills, in a variety of areas. The Diploma of Business (General
Insurance) attracts a broad client base, including members of the Insurance Industry who
wish to update their current skills. The TAFE Sector offers programs on a full-time, parttime and, in some cases, off-campus, basis, in an attempt to meet the disparate needs of a
variety of students.
The TAFE sector currently has a student population of approximately 350, with
considerable growth expected in the coming years. The School is in the process of
developing a number of new programs – Certificate III in Financial Services Operations,
Certificate III in Life Insurance Distribution, and Certificate III in Mortgage Lending.
