Lesson Plan- Field Hockey

Dribbling

Focus: Dribbling

Sub-focus: Hand eye coordination, teamwork, cardio fitness

Performance Objectives:

1.

Cognitive: The students will be able to demonstrate the proper form for dribbling.

2.

Affective: The students will demonstrate teamwork by passing to all team members during “Circle Field

Hockey”

3.

Psychomotor: The students will demonstrate the ability to perform an indian zig zag dribble successfully, using correct form, knees bent, flipping the stick and hands properly placed, during drills and games.

T.E.K.S.- 6 th Grade

1 (B) use relationships, levels, speed, direction, and pathways effectively in complex group and individual physical activities such as crouching low for volleyball digs, stretching high during lay-ups, positioning for a soccer pass, or passing ahead of a receiver; (F) throw a variety of objects demonstrating both accuracy and distance such as frisbee, softball, and basketball; (K) throw and catch a ball consistently while guarded by an opponent.

5 (A) use equipment safely and properly; (B) select and use proper attire that promotes participation and prevents injury; (C) include warm-up and cool-down procedures regularly during exercise; monitor potentially dangerous environmental conditions such as wind, cold, heat, and insects; and recommend prevention and treatment.

7 (C) identify and follow rules while playing sports and games; (E) accept successes and performance limitations of self and others, exhibit appropriate behavior responses, and recognize that improvement is possible with appropriate practice.

Materials/Equipment: 20 field hockey sticks, 10 cones, 10 field hockey balls, and 2 goals

Anticipatory Set : 20 minutes

Organization/Management: As the class comes in have them draw cards, The 4 kids that get the Aces are it. The other will spread out when the time starts, the game begins.

Safety: respect others space, keep your eyes up to watch for others.

Cues: Eyes up, and soft tag

Warm-up (5 minutes): Freeze tag- 4 people are It, while the other first start walking around. If you are tagged you must freeze and wait for someone to come crawl through your legs so you are unfrozen. As time progresses they start to run.

Organization/Management: Jump ropes are spread out around the outsides of the gym floor. Students go to grab a jump rope then spread out into the general space creating their own personal space. Be sure they give themselves plenty of room to turn their rope without hitting others.

Safety: keep your rope in your personal space, stay focused on your jump rope and movements at all times.

Cues: See it, hear it, jump it.

Fitness (10 minutes): Rope Jumping- Students will begin jumping to a cadence. As time progresses the cadence will get faster and faster causing them to work on endurance.

Organization/Management: Students in half circle/moon formation for all see, all hear.

Introduction (5 minutes): The focus for today is to work on the different kinds of dribbling used in field hockey. o Why? Because you have to be able to handle the ball in order to advance the ball through traffic and to set up a shot. o There are two types of dribbling that are commonly used: The Indian Zig Zag and Controlled Dribble.

Controlled Dribble: may be used in high traffic situations to have more control over the ball.

Gripping the stick- It is handshake grip with your dominate hand on the bottom of the stick with your non dominate hit on the top. They should be about a foot away from each other.

Have your knees bent with the blade of the stick on the ground.

Start running or jogging for beginners while keeping the ball on the stick. It should never lose contact with the stick.

 Indian Zig Zag: Has the same set up as the controlled dribble but this time the ball will be moving from one side to the other. But you are only allowed to touch the ball on the flat part for the stick. So you have to use your top hand to flip the stick back and forth to keep it from touching the other side.  o Demonstrate the Indian Zig Zag so it is easier to understand. Show how to flip the stick without the ball then show what it looks like with the ball.

Teach: 25 minutes

Organization/Management: Students will pair up with 4 and each group. There will be 2 rows of 5 cones spaced about 20 yards apart, with about 5 yards between the columns. 2 people will be on one cone with their other two partners across from them.

Safety: Watch for rolling balls, only one person from each group goes at a time.

Cues: handshake grip, stay low, flip stick.

Tasks: Dribbling o Indian Zig Zag Dribble

 One person from the group will run for their cone to the cone across from them performing the

Indian Zig Zag Dribble. 

 When they get to the other cone the other partner will take the ball and do the same thing back. 

 As students become proficient with the that dribble have them move on the next type of dribble.  o Controlled Dribble

 Same as format as the Indian Zig Zag but this time on the controlled dribble the ball does not leave the stick while dribbling. 

Lead-up Game: Circle Field Hockey

o Begin by splitting the students into two teams by giving each person a different number. All odds together, and all the evens together. They need to remember their numbers o Put the 2 goals about 25 yards apart and the teams form two half circles connecting the 2 goals o Three numbers from each team will be called, once the numbers are called, say go and thats when the 6 people rush to the ball that is placed in the middle of the goals.

o The teams are trying to score, once they score they go back to their places in the circle and 6 new numbers are called and so on. o Later you can have 2 vs. 2 or 3 vs 2. The game can change as it progresses.

Closure: 5 minutes

The students return their equipment to racks. Then they will walk the gym perimeter until all equipment has been returned. As students return to the general space for closing have them perform static stretches: bicep stretch, deltoid stretch, triceps stretch, adductor stretch, hamstring stretch, quadriceps stretch, and groin stretch. Hold each one for at least 15 seconds.

Bring them in close to check for understanding. o Can anyone demonstrate the proper form for dribbling?

 Have students critique and review the movements in their own words along with the demonstration.  o When would you use the indian zig zag dribble?

o Are you able to use your feet or hands?

o What part of the stick can you hit the ball with?

Next time we will work on passes and hitting.
