Washington Association of Agriculture Educators
A Family of Teachers and Friends
6
Agriculture teachers are very unique and special people. They give their time to their community, their school,
their students, program and their families. They are teachers and so much more. Agriculture students
participate in activities that allow them to learn, grow and improve based to a large extent on their agriculture
teacher’s guidance and involvement.
Agriculture teachers know other agriculture teachers to a greater extent than teachers in other disciplines. They
have gone to school together, planned contests and activities together, attended meetings, beyond the school
day, together and have worked towards the mutual success of the agriculture education program and the FFA.
These mutual goals create an extended family of agriculture educators throughout the state and the nation.
Wherever you go there is someone else nearby who is a kindred spirit.
Expectations of an Agriculture Educator
Some thoughts to help you keep your focus...
The expectations on an agriculture educator include a variety of activities within the SCHOOL, FFA and SAE
divisions of the agriculture education program. Sometimes the agriculture instructor is called the “FFA
teacher”, when we are so much more. It is essential to keep focused and remember that the agriculture teacher’s
job is that of a teacher, a teacher of agriculture knowledge and skills. It is important to recognize who pays
your salary and to take care of business at home before you allow your focus to lean towards winning a
competition. An agriculture teacher is also expected to be involved in professional activities. This includes
district meetings, state conference during the summer and participation in WAAE committees and activities.
These opportunities allow a teacher to develop, grow and learn as well as improve our profession.
Remember: An organization is only as strong as it’s membership and all members need to be involved to
develop and maintain it’s success.
The FFA and SAE programs are the reason that many agriculture instructors get into teaching in the first place.
It is very easy to get overwhelmed and burnt out by the many competitions and activities that you want to be
involved in. Remember to pick and choose those activities that are the most important to your program and to
not choose too many activities. Activities close to home are those that will have the greatest impact on your
program. Involvement in your community and school will help keep you focused on a strong local FFA
program. As we all know, all agriculture students should be involved in an SAE program. The inclusion of
group and experimental SAE have changed the SAE program but the focus is still the same, students are to be
involved in agriculture activities beyond the classroom. Remember the activities should be centered around the
student’s interest and career choice. Remember to document your activities in all areas of the agriculture
program that go beyond the classroom. The appropriate use of your extended time is essential to a strong
agriculture program, use your time to improve your students and your program with the direction of your
advisory committee.
Agriculture education is not a job, it is a profession. We as professionals are responsible for maintaining and
strengthening our program through member involvement, self improvement and unity of focus.
Professionalism
Code of Ethics and Public Image
7
Among the many factors that contribute to the professionalism of a teacher, ethics and public
image are among the top. The topics are very closely related. You need to fit your personality
to the community you represent. Pay close attention to the nature and background of the people
you serve. You are the professional, but the community you serve deserves consideration.
Clear professional and personal ethics will earn you respect, career success and personal
fulfillment. Here are some basic tips for upholding ethical standards.








Never violate the integrity of a student
Always speak positively about colleagues
Avoid the use of inappropriate language
Realize, personal habits are often emulated by students
Hold to high moral standards
Stand firm on convictions as to what is right and wrong
Hold fast to a single standard
Keep your focus on what’s best for students
Strong ethics are the start of establishing a positive public image for yourself and your program.
Those individuals who are successful are in tune with community expectations, are solid
citizens, are fair, are forthright, and are dependable. As Agriculture Educators, we need to
follow the teachings of our creed.
OUR CREED
National Association of Agricultural Educators
I am an agricultural educator by choice not by chance.
I believe in American agriculture; I dedicate my life to its development and the
advancement of its people.
I will strive to set before my students by my deeds and actions the highest standards of
citizenship for the community, state and nation.
I will endeavor to develop professionally through study, travel, and exploration.
I will not knowingly wrong my fellow teachers. I will defend them as far as honesty will
permit.
I will work for the advancement of agricultural education, and I will defend it in my
community, state and nation.
I realize that I am a part of the public school system. I will work in harmony with school
authorities and other teachers of the school.
My love for youth will spur me on to impart something from my life that will help make
for each of my students a full and happy future.
WAAE Traditions
Summer Conference Activities
8
Meetings
To commence meetings a cow bell is rung in the hall to gather members into the meeting room. Sessions are an important
part of summer conference as this is where the business and updates from OSPI occur. Although this information may not
be the most energizing, it is ESSENTIAL to the success of our programs so appropriate behavior is requested. If your cell
phone rings, during conference sessions, you owe the tail twister fund $5.
Name Tags
As we get larger it is more difficult to know every teacher in the state. During the meetings at state conference, we ask
that you wear your name tags for identification. If you are not wearing your name tag during roll call you will need to
contribute a $5 donation to the tail twister fund. If you need a name tag, contact the WAAE Executive Director and he
will order one for you.
Roll Call
During the conference, a roll call of members is done. Roll call is a great time for learning the new teachers’ names and
also a chance to father together and start the conference. During the roll call, we ask for reports, these reports consist of
events that have occurred in your life during the previous year. This way everyone at sessions can learn about marriages,
children and grandchildren you have come into your life during the past year. For these reports, we ask for a $5 donation
to the tail twister fund.
Faux Pas Award
The largest blunder of the year is awarded the faux pas award. The award recognizes, with humor, the accidents relating
to a teacher’s job, which unfortunately occur. The winner of the faux pas is awarded a trophy with a horse’s back side in
honor of their “accomplishment”.
Baseball
The baseball game usually consists of two games, the majors (older teachers) and the minors (younger teachers). The age
break is determined at conference, depending upon attendance. Members from the east side compete against members
from the west side. Each side has a speaker or commissioner who presents at the sessions before and after the games.
This is a great chance to compete and harass each other in complete fun with no real negativity.
Fun Night and Auction
The fun night and auction during the conference is an important event for teachers. The funds raised through the auction
go to support the coaches of state teams for the upcoming national convention. There is a live and a silent auction with
high and lower priced items. Items for the auction are always welcome as well as financial support through bidding This
money goes to us and we need to help support ourselves.
Quarter Century Club
When you have taught for 25 years, you are an invited member to the Quarter Century Club. This group consists of
people still teaching and those who have retired. The club’s activities consist of a breakfast during conference as well as
strong support for the auction. A spouse’s breakfast is also provided on the same morning.
Officer Elections
A new officer is selected each year from the state membership. It is advised that the officer candidates have at least 10
years of experience and are from the side of the mountains that conference is being held on, this allows us to alternate
sides. Officer candidates are asked to help hand out door prize tickets at the meetings and collect tickets at the banquet.
Candidates should also select a person to speak on their behalf during the voting session. The speaker is usually a
member who knows the candidate well and can describe their qualities, which would make them an outstanding officer.
Typically two candidates are selected for each year. The candidate election committee consists of the past three state
presidents. If you are interested in becoming an officer be sure to contact the presidents.
Tail Twister Fund Description and Guidelines
When someone in our WAAE family has become married, had a child, an illness or death in their family, the
tail twister fund is used to provide an acknowledgement from the WAAE. To use the fund please contact the
9
WAAE Executive Director or one of the officers. The tail twister is a fund from which we provide our
sympathy and compassion from the WAAE membership to one of our “family”, at the same time we can list the
concern on the WAAE List Serv so the membership is aware of the concern and is able to respond as is
appropriate. When contacting the executive officers, please include the following information:
 Your name and phone number or e-mail address
 Name of member
 Event or item of concern
 Address where member is located (home, hospital, etc.)
 Phone number where member can be contacted
 Whether information should be posted on the list serv or not
Serious Personal Illness - Card and $30 flower arrangement
Death in Immediate Family - Card and $30 flower arrangement
We also provide our sympathy at the death of one of our family whether a current member or a past member Card and $50 flower arrangement
Birth of a Child - Card
Marriage - Card
The tail twister fund is added to by the membership each year during the state conference. During roll call,
reports are given by the membership identifying events that have occurred in our lives during the past year. For
these reports, we ask for a $5 donation to the Tail Twister fund. You must also contribute to the tail twister
fund if you are not wearing your name tag during roll call or if you cell phone rings during any of the general
sessions.
