Design Competition and Exhibition
Entry Guidelines
Design Categories: Scenic, Costume/Make-up/Hair, Lighting/
Sound, Special Effects/Technical Design, Graphics
General Guidelines
1. An Entry Form must be submitted online for all entries by May26, 2014. The entry form is
available at on the EMACT website. Please submit applications to Susan Harrington at
Membership@emact.org
2. Entry Fee: $25.00 for the group's 1st entry and $15.00 for any additional
3. Qualification: Each entry must have been designed for an EMACT member theatre
production staged between July 2013 and May 2014.
4. Each entry should represent a single aspect of a single production, except in the case of
promotional media, which may represent a single season.
5. Entries may include multiple pieces, i.e., multiple costume designs for a show or multiple
views of a show’s set or lighting.
6. Display Options: Entries for table top display may occupy a space of 30” x 36.” Free standing
floor displays – such as costumes on mannequins or dress forms, may occupy a foot print of up
to 40” x 40.” Entries for free standing floor display must have their own means of display.
Indicate which display method you will be using on the entry form.
7. Location: Entries will be displayed in the upper lobby of the Christine McGrath Performing
Arts Center of Tewksbury Memorial High School. The Design Competition and Exhibition opens
to the public at 12 noon, Saturday June 28, 2014.
8. Set Up: Entries are to be set up Saturday, June 28, 2014Friday, June 27, 2013 from 8:00 –
11:00 AM.
• It is the responsibility of the entrant to transport their entry to the exhibit site.
• EMACT will provide table space and access to AC power, as requested on entry form.
• It is the responsibility of the entrant to provide anything else needed for the effective
presentation of the design. (i.e., mannequins or models, video/audio playback devices, vertical
riser, etc.)
• An audio or video playback may NOT interfere with another display. Headphones for the
playback device are strongly encouraged.
-29. Strike: All entries must be struck between 4:00 - 5:30, June 29, 2014. Groups are solely
responsible for setting & striking their entries. Entries left without arrangements for return will be
considered abandoned and discarded.
10. Awards will be given at the discretion of the Judges, based on concept, creativity,
originality, effectiveness, and execution. Certificates will be presented to the winners.
• The Judges will have sole responsibility for the interpretation of these guidelines and their
execution.
• The decisions of the Judges will be final.
Requirements for All Entries
1. Every entry exhibit must include a written Design Statement in which the designer states the
objective and challenges of the design, and shares his/her concept, thought, and rationale for
the design.
The Design Statement should be no longer than 250 words.
2. Photos, videos, or original items of the design as it was originally presented ARE required,
except that Sound Design entry will need an audio playback rather than visual.
3. A pleasing presentation of the design entry is strongly encouraged.
4. Entrants should include anything they think will help the judges “visualize” their designs.
Specific Additional Requirements by Area
1. Scenic Design
• A model, line drawing and/or rendering
• A floor plan
• Elevations and working drawings are optional, but will aid in the display of the design
concept.
2. Costume, Hair, and/or Make-up Design
Costume
• Actual costume(s), when possible
• Line drawings and renderings, if applicable
• Costume Plot by Character
Make-up Design
• Character design sheets showing make-up color choices and application information
• Example of prosthetics, if applicable
Hair Design
• Style sheet from which design is comprised
• Wig samples, if applicable
-33. Lighting Design
• Light Plot
• Working script showing cue placement
• Other paperwork, as needed to illustrate design
4. Sound Design
• Cue sheet showing effects/mic choices
• A floor plan of speaker placement
• A flow chart of equipment and routing
5. Special Effects or Technical Design
Special Effects
• Cue sheet showing effects timing
• Floor plan of effects placement
• Statement of how actor safety was ensured
Technical Design (solution to a technical problem: rain, blood from a knife cut, etc.)
• Working drawings of the unit
• Model or the actual unit
6. Graphic Design (posters, artwork, programs, etc)
• Example(s) of the work
Criteria for Judging
• What is the specific objective of the design?
• What were the challenges faced and how successful were the solutions chosen?
• How did choices of color, line, texture, composition, and motion reflect the objectives and
solutions chosen?
Reminder:
• Entries left without arrangements for return will be considered abandoned and discarded.
Entrants must be an EMACT member in good standing.
