CONTENT AND SCOPE
The Richard S. Van Wagoner papers contain a record of the
author's historical research and writing from 1979 to 1987.
During the six years covered by the collection, Van Wagoner
produced two books and several articles on subjects of interest
to students of Mormonism. The material contained in the
collection spans over one hundred and fifty years.
The bulk of the collection consists of Van Wagoner's
research files, which he divided into two categories, "People,"
and "Subjects." People files may contain information pertaining
to the individual noted on the folder, or copies of papers,
articles, or books written by the individual. Subjects files
typically contain copies of papers (both published and
unpublished) which relate to the designated topic, newspaper
clippings, copies or typescripts of journals, the author's
research notes, or copies of secondary source material.
Articles and excerpts from secondary sources which Van Wagoner
has copied have been reviewed, and only hard-to-locate items and
items which contain Van Wagoner's notations have been retained.
A list of the printed items removed from the manuscript
collection is given in the appendix; these are readily available
elsewhere.
The collection contains drafts of manuscripts which were
later published. In most cases, both the earliest and latest
drafts have been retained. A list of individual biographies
which were ultimately edited out of A Book of Mormons has been
inserted at the beginning of Bx 3, Fd 9.
The correspondence files have been arranged
chronologically, and reflect a wide range of correspondents.
Van Wagoner's research and writing have brought him into contact
with many Mormon historians. His involvement with Signature
Books has further strengthened his ties with the historical
community. Those who are interested in past and current debates
in Mormon historiography will find much of interest in the
Richard S. Van Wagoner papers.
BIOGRAPHY OF RICHARD S. VAN WAGONER
Growing up in Lehi, Utah, Richard Van Wagoner's interest in
local history was fanned by the enthusiasm of his mother, Gayle
Smith Julian Van Wagoner. Gayle, an avid genealogist and
descendent of several pioneer families, walked her sons about
town on numerous occasions, pointing out to them important
buildings and historic sites while regaling them with memorable
anecdotes.
A richly rewarding Lehi High School American history course
taught by Dean Welch further bolstered Van Wagoner's interest in
history. While serving an LDS mission to the Central States,
where much Mormon history took place, his love for history
became even stronger. After marrying Mary Carter and continuing
his education at Brigham Young University, however, Van Wagoner
obtained a master's degree in clinical audiology. He continues
to work as a profession audiologist. Van Wagoner has authored
more than a dozen audiology articles which have been published
in various professional journals. He is also an avid Mormon
historical research and writer.
In the late 1970s, while researching a historical novel
(which was never written), Van Wagoner became intrigued by the
massive amount of material contained in the library-archives of
the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He and a
friend, Steven C. Walker, decided to write a biographical work
dealing with the lives of more than one hundred prominent
Mormons of the past. Ultimately this was shortened to seventyeight biographies, and A Book of Mormons was published by
Signature Books in 1982.
While working on this book, Van Wagoner became interested
in Mormon polygamy. He accordingly undertook a four-year
project which ultimately led to the publication of his second
book, Mormon Polygamy: A History (Signature Books, 1986). When
the printing sold out in 1988, a second, soft-cover edition was
issued.
Researching the history of the Lehi Sugar Factory in 1984,
Van Wagoner discovered extensive collections of Lehi materials
in various archives about the state. Not only were hundreds of
Lehi Banner, Lehi Sun, and Lehi Free Press newspapers available,
but the extensive Journal History of the Church (with more than
a thousand Lehi entries), and fabulous Lehi diary collections
seemed a historian's dream come true. While Hamilton Gardner's
History of Lehi (1913) and the Lehi Centennial History (1950)
contain a treasure trove of Lehi history, it became obvious to
Van Wagoner that neither book had made use of most of the
materials he had discovered. He determined to write another
Lehi history book.
On 13 December 1988, $76,000 was granted by the Lehi City
Council for publication of four thousand copies of his Lehi:
Portraits of a Utah Town. The book, published in 1990,
celebrates the 140th anniversary of Lehi's settlement and the
centennial of the Lehi Sugar Factory.
--Quoted with some revising and updating from Lehi: Portraits of
a Utah Town.
