President’s Message
Committees are where most of the REAL works of the PSG materializes.
Many of the policy and project decisions reached by the PSG Officers and
Board of Directors begin with ideas raised at the committee meetings and
developed by specific committees. This year‘s theme Let PSG evolve as we
learn from the past to redefine our future, comprises a comprehensive program
that support those who work in all aspects of gastroenterology—clinicians,
students, trainees, and patients. The Philippine Society of Gastroenterology
considers the perspectives of all constituents in the interdependent GI
community and develops programs that advance the field as a whole. This
serves as the culmination of the hard work of the hundreds of members who
serve on PSG committees, attend scientific sessions, and participate in
advocacy efforts.
So take your time to review what PSG committees have been doing for you.
The PSG 2010 Committees, have on-going projects and are beginning their
work. However, we invite you get involve as PSG evolves.

Highlights of the convention:
 There were about 14 Foreign Speakers and 32 local speakers were
invited to share their expertise. The “PinoyDok” brass statue was
launched as the symbol of the Filipino Doctor. .
 Meet the Experts. The idea of having the Past Presidents was an
innovation of this convention and was met with good feedback.
 Radiology – Chair: Stephen N. Wong, MD
Radiology Workshop turned out to be successful despite a slight
delay in the beginning of the Program.
 Nutrition conference: sponsored by Nutrition Council: Lectures are
more organized compared to the previous years and that copies of
lectures are being requested
 EX-VIVO – Chair: Evan G. Ong, MD
There were 32 attendees (17 fellows, 15 consultants). There were no
problems encountered in the transfer and installation of equipments.
There were minor problems in the EUS and enteroscopy stations
because the intestines of the dead pig dried up causing perforation.
But the workshop went on and was able to show the audience the
procedures that they need to learn. The audience had a positive
response based on the feedback form given and they are requesting
for another EXVIVO Workshop. Certificates of attendance will be
given to all attendees.
 Not all the registered delegates were actually attending the
convention proper. The need to monitor attendance in the
conference was suggested
 To come up with a feedback card which will be filled up by the
attendees at the end of every session. It was suggested that the
Certificate of Attendance should only be given after the submission
of the completely filled up feedback card.
 The Socials Committee, chaired Ma. Nelia R. Runez, MD, was
tasked to handle and organize 2 events for the 2010 PDHW, to
celebrate the 50th year of the PSG. The opening ceremonies and the
fellowship night were assigned to them dated March 10,2010 and
March 13, 2010 respectively
The opening ceremonies had the usual processional and
induction ceremonies for new Diplomates, Fellows and Life
Fellows. It was also the venue for the 50 th year celebration wherein
the Past Presidents were honored with the “Walk of Honor.” They
were all presented to the members and awarded with medallions for
their valuable contributions to the society. A special award, The
PinoyDokAward was given to honor Ernesto Domingo, MD, for
being awarded the National Scientist of the Year. Jesus Y. Perez,
MD, gave the PSG historical background with previous activities
and photos of the Society.
The fellowship night was more relaxed and informal. The
induction of officers, awarding of winners for outstanding papers
and most outstanding fellow were done in this event. Buffet dinner
was served and had Ms. K. Brosas and the Midlife Crisis Band as
entertainers. The socials committee would like to thank Jane
Campos, MD, Roy Gonzales, MD and Denis Ngo, MD, for superbly
hosting the show.

COMMITTEE ON MEMBERSHIP
BOD IN CHARGE: Joseph C. Bocobo, M.D.
Accomplishments and On-going Projects:
1.
The enhancement and maintenance of the PSG portal.
The PSG web portal (www.psgastro.org) has been updated and two modules
have been added to meet the requirements of the society through Que
Systems Technology.
A. Member ID Maintenance System
This module maintains the existing PSG membership database and
includes barcode information. The same barcode will be used to generate
an ID for each member which will serve as his access to the portal, as
well as to the society’s activities. A barcode device can be used and
linked to this database for a more efficient encoding of information.
Pertinent reports to list down and summarize the member’s information
will be made available for easy information retrieval. Below is the PSG
ID.
The photos of members will be taken during the registration in the Joint
Annual Convention 2011 of the 3 societies.
B. Online Registration for PSG-organized Conferences
This module sets up the details of the conference to allow the recording
of the attendance of each member using the membership ID. Using the
membership database and support systems, the membership ID through
its barcode information, can be used as identifier to record the attendance
of the members. A standard registration form will be used to record the
attendance of all participant members and will form part of their
membership records. Detailed and summary reports can be generated to
list down and summarize the attendees of the conferences.
All members are encouraged and invited to visit our portal
(www.psgastro.org). The members’ usernames and passwords will be given
to the members during the registration in the Joint Annual Convention 2011
of the 3 societies. In case a member has no available username and password,
he should register at the website to create his own.
2.
The MSD Online Service
Members can retrieve full text articles via email from relevant medical
journals through the society’s website through the MSD Online Research
Center link. A member should log in with his username and password to
access the MSD link. Once in the MSD link, one needs to fill up the
necessary information to complete the pathway for article retrieval and click
‘submit’ when done. The article/s will be sent to the members by MSD
through the member’s email.
3.
The PSG Christmas Party
The PSG Christmas Party was held on December 14, 2010 at the Wack Wack
Golf and Country Club attended by PSG members and friends from the
BioMedical Industry. It was a night of camaraderie, relaxation and fun
among the members and representatives from the Pharmaceutical Companies
as they enjoyed the food, music and surprised games prepared for everyone.

Reorganization of the different councils
The different councils were reorganized last November 5, 2010 during
the Annual convention held in Boracay Islands. Every member of the
society was encouraged to join the different councils. Members were
sent letters and called by telephone to indicate their willingness to join
the different councils. To ensure that everyone was contacted, text
messages were sent to all. During the reorganization meeting, core
members registered to the different councils and elected their core leader
who will act as their council chair. (see attached file for council members
and their core leaders)
II. Participation of the councils in the Lay Forum:
Two of the councils participate in the Lay forum. The council on
Malignancy will have a booth at the Lay Forum. They will highlight the
advocacies of the society regarding the prevention and early detection of
GI malignancies. They will also emphasize the importance of
Colonoscopy as a tool for early detection and prevention of colorectal
cancers. The council on Nutrition will provide counseling for the
different dietary needs of participants.

done in coordination with Otsuka Pharmaceuticals and SOCSKSARGEN Chapter of the
Philippine College of Physician. This was attended by 216 participants comprised of
dieticians, nutritionist and doctors.
The second nutrition workshop was held on September 15, 2010 at Pearl Manila Hotel
done in coordination with Medical Center Manila. The nutritional workshop entitled
“Specialized Diets for Specific Diseases” discussed nutritional support for various
diseases including acute pancreatitis, cardiovascular disease, COPD, critical care,
cirrhosis and cancer. The science and art of nutritional assessment was once again
emphasized.
On-going projects:
This forthcoming year, the Nutritional Council plans to hold to 3 nutrition
workshops and a single topic conference. Furthermore, it plans to develop

NATIONAL LAY FORUM Cebu and Davao
BOD COORDINATOR: Frederick T. Dy, MD
MEMBERS:
1. Arsenio C. Caburnay, MD (Co-Chair)
2. Ma. Cecilia M. Sison, MD
3. Jade D. Jamias, MD
4. Ian Homer Y. Cua, MD
5. Imelda P. Acusar, MD- Cebu coordinator
6. Aaron I. Velasco, MD- Davao coordinator
7. Albert E. Ismael, MD- adviser
The lay forum was moved to from Manila to Cebu and Davao.
Objective:
1. To promote, advance, and broaden awareness of the Digestive Oncology in areas
outside Metro Manila through a layforum
2. To establish the framework with other membes of the Society through projects geared
towards information dissemination of various digestive oncology
3. To extend projects at different areas of the Phiippines by lowering the logistics cost.
We have successfully conducted 2 lay fora:
 Cebu City last September 3, 2010 held at Capitol Building from 10am
to 430pm : This year, we experimented by changing the venue in
Cebu to the Capitol building with targeted audience comprising
Barangay Health Workers. The objective was to keep them focused
for the entire lay forum as they are already “captured audiences”
As early as 9am, people were already queuing up for
the Cebu lay forum. A total of 570 individuals attended the
lay forum and I am both happy and proud that 95% of the
attendees finished the entire lay forum. The discussions were
very lively. Some of the barangay health workers were even
taking notes. It may be a good idea to continue in this manner
in the future as these barangay health workers can echo what
they have learned to their respective communities. The lay
forum in Cebu was greeted with much enthusiasm from the
provincial government with no less than the Governor, Hon.
Gwen Garcia wanting this to be a yearly event. The attendees
were very thankful for the time and effort we have shared.
This report in Cebu would not be complete without my
extending my great appreciation to all the members of our
Society in Cebu but most especially to Imelda P. Acusar,
MD, Leslee Y. Ong, MD and Rody K. Go, MD, who stayed
from the beginning to the end overseeing the entire lay
forum.

SM Davao City last September 10, 2010 from 11am to 5pm. This was
in contrast to the Davao lay forum wherein we still used the mall as
the venue. We have coordinated with the Provincial Government in
Cebu and City Government in Davao.
The lay forum in Davao started promptly at 11am. A
total of 180 people attended the event and approximately
60% stayed for the entire lay forum. Most of the attendees
were barangay health workers with a few nurses, midwives
and around 10% lay. I must admit that I would have wanted
more participants. However, we were not able to anticipate
the end of Ramadan as it fell on the day of the lay forum. It
may seem fortuitous that the day was declared a special
holiday so we were expecting more people in the mall but
unfortunately, the Muslims were having their fun in their
respective communities and were away from the mall. Our
members in Davao did their utmost best to share their
knowledge using the local dialect. The attendees were
thankful for the event. As in Cebu, I would also like to give
my kudos to all our members in Davao especially to Aaron I.
Velasco, MD, Miguelito W. Lasala, MD and Jun C. Pilapil,
MD.
We shifted the focus of the topics towards different gastrointestinal cancers
with the objective of making people aware not only of the signs and symptoms for
earlier detection but also for the prevention of these diseases. These topics were likewise
chosen in line with the Asia Pacific and WGO thrust for gastrointestinal cancer program
in the next few years..We hoped that by joining and coordinating with the government,
we can, through their usual media (radio, TV, newspaper, etc.) disseminate the lay fora
to all areas of the region.
BOD COORDINATOR: Frederick T. Dy, MD
MEMBERS:
1. Ernesto R. Que, MD
2. Virgilio P. Banez, MD
3. Carla D. Sibulo, MD
Objective:
1. To seek the improvement of the present constitution for the benefit of
the Society and its members.
The current by-laws of the society were studied and reviewed in its entirety. Some of the
proposed amendments are as follows:
1. Additional membership type, i.e. associate member.
2. Include the past training officers of accredited PSG training
institutions as part of eligibility for being members of the accreditation
and specialty boards and indicate the term of members in each
standing committee.
This year, we are determined to expand the functions of the
Committee on Training Program to Committee on Training Program
and Education. This would include projects to continuously educate
the members on the latest information on gastrointestinal disorders.
Additionally, we expect the need for clinical practice guidelines and
this we seek to task the Committee on Councils through it respective
council to be responsible for its formulation. As such, we are
suggesting to improve the name of Committee on Councils to
Committee on Councils, Clinical Practice and Quality Management.
The meeting convened with the chair and all members present. The
approved proposals by the committee were then sent to a licensed
lawyer for editing. This was presented in the PSG Board of Directors
meeting for approval.
Attached are our proposed amendments and corrections. (separate folders)
