SPCH 153- Assignment Descriptions
Journal assignments: Students will be asked to write a 300-500 word journal entry in
which you will examine a particular instance of interpersonal communication. Students
will be asked to apply theories and concepts of interpersonal communication either to
situations they themselves have experienced, or situations that they have observed or
independently examined. There will be four journal assignments in the course, each
worth 100 points per journal.
Final project: The final project in the course will be similar to the journal assignments in
which they will be asked to examine an instance of interpersonal communication,
however students will be asked to examine the instance of interpersonal communication
from the complete understanding of content in the course. Students may choose to
elaborate on an existing journal assignment, or they may choose an original instance. The
student will be asked to write a 500-750 word journal entry to describe and explain the
instance in addition to a five to seven minute presentation to explain the concept to the
entire class. The final project will be worth 200 points, and will be due at the conclusion
of the course.
Exams: There will be two exams in the course- a midterm exam worth 100 points, and a
final exam worth 150 points. The exams will cover content from the textbook, course
discussions, and assignments. The exams will consist of multiple choice questions, true
and false statements, matching, and written short answers.
Classroom assignments: Particular assignments to be completed in a given class period.
These assignments will be varied and may include pop quizzes, short free writing
sessions, oral reports, and pretty much anything else that the instructor decides might be a
good idea for the day. The classroom assignments will be worth a combined value of 100
points.
Classroom discussion and participation: I wasn’t kidding when I said that this class
depends on your perspective and evaluation! Each class will be structured around a group
discussion and sharing of ideas. You don’t have to dominate the discussion, just be a part
of the discussion and share your perspective when applicable or when invited by the
instructor. Attending class, speaking your mind, and asking questions will earn you an
easy 200 points.
