10. Justification for course change.
Many universities in the U.S. have Calculus 1 as a pre-requisite for Physics 1 rather than a
co-requisite. At NAU we have traditionally had Calculus 1 as a co-requisite; this was done
as a practical issue because most of our incoming freshmen placed into Pre-Calculus
rather than into Calculus. However, in the summer of 2011 the professional advisor for
Physics, Chemistry, and Math (Jared Gardner) analyzed the grade distribution from the
Spring 2011 PHY 161 classes. He found that the students who had successfully completed
MAT 136 before taking PHY 161 had an average GPA in the class of 0.73 points higher than
the students who had not successfully completed MAT 136 previous to taking the physics
class. A T test showed that this result was statistically significant. A similar study for PHY
262 with Calculus 2 as co-req/pre-req did not show the same results, so our belief is that it
is not actually the knowledge of the calculus that makes the difference, but the overall math
skills of the students that make the difference. With the new emphasis on student success,
we feel that it is time to change Calculus 1 from a co-requisite to a pre-requisite in order to
make sure that students have the skills they need to succeed in PHY 161.

Dear Kathy - I've received input from our undergraduate committee on this. Although
not unanimous, it was generally felt that geology students who opted for PHY161/262
would be better served by having
MAT136 as a pre-requisite than as a co-requisite. If a geology student needs to take
their required physics classes prior to or coincident with MAT136, they can take
PHY111/112 instead, unless they are in our hydrogeology emphasis program, which
requires them to take PHY161/262. For those students, proper advisement will be
important to make sure they are not hindered by the new prerequisite. It is possible
that occasions will arise when students will ask for the requirement to be waived,
especially in the near-term, because programs of study for current students were
prepared without knowledge of the change.
Best wishes,
Thomas Hoisch
