Teacher: Ms. Latifa Yeasmin
Information Sheet

Topic: Unit: 5.08 A Closer Look at Digestion
Lesson – 1
Topic: Explaining the unit
 Key points:
 Digestion in the mouth
 Swallowing
 How food moves along the alimentary canal
 Digestion in the stomach and intestine
 Key Words:
 Saliva – A slippery liquid comes out from salivary glands.
 Bolus – food inside mouth after chewing become a round lump called “bolus”
 Epiglottis – A flap of skin, drops over the top of the windpipe.
 Oesophagus – At the back of epiglottis, a tube that pass the food to stomach called gullet or oesophagus.
** Alimentary canal has circular muscle that contract and relax and food pass along the tube.
** The contraction and relaxation of circular muscles is called peristalsis.
** Saliva has carbohydrase enzyme to digest food.
** In the stomach the food is mixed with gastric juice and HCl acid made in the stomach wall.
** Gastric juice contain protease enzyme.
** In small intestine three liquids mix with food
1.
Pancriatic Juice  come out from pancreas, contain protease (for protein food), lipase (for fat), Amylase (for
starch).
2.
Bile  Comes from the liver and breaks down fat foods.
3.
Intestinal Juice  comes from intestine and contain protease, amylase and lipase.
Lesson – 2 Topic: Solving Q/A
