speaking to you like that?” said by David page 115-116. This is important because
David sees the child in his father and sees his grandfather as his fathers dad. He
is trying to put himself into his fathers shoes and figure out how Julian can yell at

Therefore he relied on his wife to be there for him and was able to ask for help
without seeming less of a man.
5. Dale Paris and 4 other men (mom shoots gun) tries to get Frank out of “jail”
● QUOTE: “She raised the shotgun, pumped another shell into the chamber-the
ejected empty shell skittered across the linoleum-as if she were a practiced with
that weapon as she was with her typewriter. said by David page 137” This was
important because it shocked David to see his mother shooting a gun. Though
she had never done it before she has seen her husband, father and hunters shoot
a gun numerous of times.

● For Wes it was the secrets that he held, but also his bitterness
11. David gets married to Betsey
● Betsy, lived in seven cities before graduating high school, David only two cities
● The story about Davids childhood hometown stunned, and fascinated her
WHY (Not facts!) is this important:
1. Marie’s Death
● Marie’s death is important because they believe that Marie’s mother blamed them for her
death. Marie’s death shocked everyone and caused Wesley to change his daily habits working morning until late at night.
● QUOTE: “Try to find out where we can send flowers. It’s the least we can do. And
we have to do something.” page 105 said by Gail. This is important because it
shows how much the Hayden’s family cared about Marie Little Soldier.
2. Frank Arrested
● Frank being arrested is important because it is now a challenge for the family to take in
what has happened. It also shows the struggle that Wes has to go through to arrest his
own brother, while his father Julian doesn’t agree with his choice. Wesley had the choice
to let Frank live his day-to-day life as usual, or to have him serve justice.
● QUOTE: “I hadn’t thought of my father as being against his brother, not in any
personal way. I preferred to think of it as though the law had taken a curve in its
course, and as a result these two brothers had ended up on opposite sides of the
road.” Page 117 said by David. This quote shows David’s perspective on how he
sees his father and uncle interact with each other. David explains how his father
and uncle ended up on opposite sides of the road. Meaning one side of the road is
the law, and the other side is personal. And his father, Wesley, is stuck in the
middle - with a big choice to make.
3. Enid and Julian (grandma and grandpa) visit David’s house
● They try and talk Wes and Gail into letting Frank go. An argument arises and they find
out about the murder that Frank committed, when Wesley yells it out loud.
● Gail tries to calm everyone down by asking for drinks, but that does not budge. Gail then
leaves the argument with Enid and heads for the kitchen.
●
4. Wesley is in the kitchen and breaks down crying in Gail’s lap and David notices after the
grandparents leave, when he comes downstairs.
●
5. Dale Paris and 4 men (mom shoots gun) tries to get Frank out of “jail”
●
6. Frank breaking jars/suicide
● Frank breaking the jars shows how upset he is and how he cannot speak how he feels;
so he takes actions into his own hands. Frank was breaking the jars to get his brother
Wesley’s attention. If Wes would have went downstairs when Frank was throwing the
jars, Frank might still be alive.
7. Franks funeral (families separating)
● All the family sat together in the church pews during Franks ceremony, but no one talked
to each other. Afterward, while they
8. David jumps out of car to get one last look of the house
● QUOTE: Page 168 “I wanted one last look, to see what our house looked like
without us in it. If my parents asked what i was looking for , i had already decided
what i would answer. “ghosts,” i would say. This is David’s closer to the whole
event that took place in his childhood home. He wanted to see if the house, and
rooms looked any different with out everyone and a big secret covered up.
9. Hayden’s (Gail, Wes, David) moved to Fargo, North Dakota - gma writing letters
●
10. Len and Julian died from brain hemorrhages from keeping “secrets” Wes died from
cancer that David believes eventually his secret about his brother eventually turned into
cancer and his mother Gail died of a Heart attack
●
11. David gets married to Betsey
● Their both teachers ,and they traveled around to see Betsey’s childhood neighborhood
when she wanted to visit his childhood neighbor hood in Montana he said “no, i have no
desire to go back there.Afterwards David did not want to relive his childhood
memories by going back to Montana. He eventually told her what had happened
that summer of 1948 and during their gathering at his parents for Thanksgiving
dinner Betsey said “David told me what happened in Montana. That sure was the
wild west, wasn't it?” This is important because he had a hard time telling her for
fear of her reaction ,but eventually did to see what his families response would be
if someone who didn't know brought up the unspoken event.”
