QUIZZES
About every other week, we will have a reading comprehension quiz based on the
assigned reading. We will also have vocabulary quizzes based on words taken for the books we
are reading. After we finish a book, we will have a cumulative test comprised of plot summaries,
vocabulary and other literary components such as theme and point of view.
HOMEWORK
Homework will be assigned reading and usually filling out a corresponding chapter
summary sheet for each chapter. We will also fill out vocabulary sheets and study guides for
each book we finish. Homework will be assigned each class period.
BOOKREPORTS
We will complete one book report each quarter. We will complete the book reports in
class and they will be based on one of the books we have read in class that quarter.

PARTICIPATION
In order to work on reading comprehension and pronunciation, we will spend about a half
hour a week reading in class, either as an entire class or broken down into small reading rotation
groups. It is essential that students follow along when it is not their turn to read and to participate
in class discussion. This grade reflects that level of participation
750 PAGES
Please see the information below regarding the 750 page reading requirement per quarter.
St. Michael’s Episcopal Day School
6th Grade Literature – 750 Pages Requirement
In Reading/Literature class this year, the students will be reading five (5) books as a class, and
they will be writing a book report on each of these books. The books we will read together are,
in order, as follows:
The Outsiders by S. E. Hinton
The Call of the Wild by Jack London
The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain
The Diary of Anne Frank from Anne Frank
The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster
The students received their copy of The Outsiders during the first week of school. They will
receive their copy of the appropriate book after we finish working with the previous novel. They
will return it after they have written their book report.
Including the reading for their book reports, each student is required to read a total of 750 pages
per quarter. At the end of the quarter, they will turn in a list of the books that they have read
which total at least 750 pages. The book report books are included in this page requirement.
I look forward to working with your children. Please feel free to contact me if you have any
questions or concerns during the year.
