MEMORANDUM FOR INCOMING CADETS
FROM: AFROTC Detachment 665 Commander
SUBJECT: New Student Orientation Program
1. Welcome to the Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps (AFROTC) program at the
University of Cincinnati! I'm Lt Col Shaun House, the Detachment Commander and I am
pleased that you are considering a career in the United States Air Force. On 18-19 September
we will be conducting a New Student Orientation Program (NSOP) in Swift Hall room 800.
Please refer to the schedule included with this packet for specific times. The NSOP is open to
both new cadets and their parents and will provide an excellent opportunity to get acquainted
with AFROTC, your fellow cadets and your possible future as an Air Force officer.
2. Here at Det 665, our officers and enlisted personnel ensure that you receive the best military
training. While we oversee the administrative side of our mission to develop students into future
Air Force Officers, the Detachment Wing is run by the cadets. During your first two years as a
General Military Course (GMC) cadet, you will be trained by the Professional Officer Course
(POC) cadets. These are cadets who have successfully completed their initial training and
graduated from Field Training, a five week rigorous training and evaluation period that all cadets
attend prior to entering the POC. As you progress through ROTC and move from a GMC cadet
to a POC cadet, you will have the opportunity to develop your leadership skills and train your
fellow cadets. Upon graduating from ROTC, you will be ready to enter the Air Force as a 2nd
Lieutenant.
3. Our mission to train each of you starts from day one, and I urge you to make every effort to
attend NSOP. It is something that both you and your parents will benefit greatly from. NSOP
will provide you a chance to learn what it means to be a cadet in ROTC, and to build a bond with
your fellow cadets.
4. Congratulations on taking the first step toward an Air Force commission and a great way of
life. I look forward to your arrival! If you have any questions regarding NSOP, please contact the
Detachment at 513-556-2237.

MEMORANDUM FOR INCOMING CADETS
FROM: AFROTC Detachment 665 Cadet Wing Commander
SUBJECT: New Student Orientation Program
1. Welcome to the University of Cincinnati and Air Force ROTC! As cadets and future officers
in the United States Air Force, you are about to embark on what will hopefully be one of the best
times of your life. As a fellow student and soon-to-be graduate from The University of
Cincinnati, I know what college life is like and how important it is to start off on the right foot.
That is our hope during our New Student Orientation Program (NSOP), to get each and every
one of you started on the right foot. Whether you are an incoming freshman, or someone who
has completed a few years of college, everyone can gain something through NSOP.
2. This year's NSOP has been designed with all of you in mind. It is our goal to get you up to
speed as quickly as possible and to provide you with information that will help you to succeed in
ROTC. At NSOP, you will learn many of the basics such as how to wear a uniform and the Air
Force customs and courtesies. In addition, you will be introduced to the other functions of
ROTC such as our Color Guard and Civil Air Patrol (CAP), which offers cadets opportunities to
fly with trained pilots, free of charge. You will also meet and get to know your fellow cadets,
and have some fun.
3. I urge you to read through this packet thoroughly. All of the information that you need is
contained in this packet. The rest of this packet needs to be filled out and brought to NSOP. If
you have any questions regarding the packet, NSOP, or any other general concerns, please feel
free to contact the Detachment at 513-556-2237.
4. I am looking forward to another great year and I am both exited and honored to be your
Cadet Commander for the coming fall term. Enjoy the rest of your summer break and I look
forward to seeing you September 18 and 19 at NSOP.

Important Information
1. Reporting. All NSOP participants should report to Swift Hall 800 (see attached map) between
1030 and 1045 on Friday, 18 September 2009. If you are a Cross-town (Xavier, NKU, etc)
cadet and will be in class on Friday, an excuse letter from the Detachment Commander will be
provided. Please circle “Yes” on the NSOP Reservation Form stating that you will need a letter
releasing you from class.
2. Physical Fitness. During NSOP you will be required to participate in light physical activities.
We will be playing Ultimate Frisbee, and I urge all of you to get in shape before NSOP and the
upcoming school year. The upcoming quarter will be easier if you arrive at NSOP in good
physical condition. Our physical requirements are ongoing and ever increasing. You will be
tested every quarter throughout your AFROTC experience.
3. Physical Preparation. To make the transition into ROTC, you need to begin preparing
yourself by maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Below is a basic 3-week Physical Conditioning Plan
that is designed to prime you for our morning Physical Training (PT) sessions.

These exercises can be done throughout the day. As a tip,
instead of doing nothing during a TV commercial, do a set of
push-ups or crunches. Broken up, these sets of exercises can be
manageable. If this workout routine is too aggressive, take out a
few sets or do fewer reps per set. If it is not enough, add more
sets or more repetitions to each set. The key is to always push
yourself to do better.
4. Weight Standards. To the right are the weight standards for
males and females. Just like the Physical Fitness Test (PFT)
which is administered every quarter, you must meet the Air
Force weight standards. If you are currently not within the
regulations, we will work with you to ensure you receive every
opportunity to make it within regulations.
The table gives you an idea of the weight chart against which
you will be measured. Height is measured from the floor to a
plane perpendicular to the top of your head with your head and
back against a wall. This height measurement (to quarter inch
increment) is then plotted to the male or female weight table.
You maximum allowable weight (MAW) is the upper limit.
A cadet above MAW cannot activate his/her scholarship until
they are below that upper limit. Cadets are weighed at the start
of each term; those within 10 pounds of MAW are monitored
closely with monthly weigh-ins. Overweight cadets (above
MAW) require extra counseling and monitoring to ensure
standards are met.
* For every inch < 58 inches, subtract 2 pounds; for every inch > 80 inches,
add 6 pounds.

5. Grooming Standards. In addition to physical fitness and weight standards, you will be
required to be within Air Force grooming standards for NSOP. We will be providing haircuts,
free of charge, for all males who are not within grooming standards however you are strongly
encouraged to get you hair cut before NSOP. For men, hair must not be touching the ears or
over the eyebrows. It must be tapered in the back and must not exceed 1.25 inches in bulk. For
women, if hair is long, you may put it up in a French braid or bun, but hair cannot extend over
eyebrows, touch the lower edge of the collar, and must not exceed 3 inches in bulk (when worn
up). You are expected to adhere to these standards upon arrival. Males please with no earrings;
females may wear one in each ear on the ear lobe. See the following instruction for Air Force
grooming standards: http://www.e-publishing.af.mil/pubfiles/af/36/afi36-2903/afi36-2903.pdf.
6. Meals. You should bring $25.00 with you to NSOP to cover your costs for dinner on Friday
and Lunch on Saturday. We will be serving Lunch on Friday as well as serving both Breakfast
and hosting a Cookout on Saturday. Please refer to the schedule included with this packet for
more details. If you have any dietary restrictions, please indicate this information on your NSOP
RSVP form.
7. Drugs and Alcohol. Both are prohibited while at NSOP, regardless of age. The Air Force has
no tolerance for illegal drug use, and alcohol is prohibited until you are 21 years of age
8. Identification. You will need to bring some sort of picture identification with you to NSOP. A
driver's license or high school ID card will suffice. If you do not have a picture ID, you must
bring your birth certificate and your social security card with you.

holes) and a Polo shirt (with no holes). Saturday morning we will be working out so bring a set
of workout cloths as well. They should also be professional in appearance (e.g. no cut-off or
sleeveless shirts and no tight fitting clothing)—a pair of running shorts and a plain t-shirt will
suffice. In addition to these items, you will need to wear/bring on Saturday:
