SIGNIFICANT CONTRIBUTION
(RESUME)
Dr. Sadia Ferheen has completed her Ph.D. in 2007 under the guidance of Dr. Nighat
Afza, T.I. on isolation of natural products. After completing her Ph.D. she worked for a
few months with Prof. Dr. Abdul Malik, as Post Doctoral Research Fellow, at HEJ
Research Institute of Chemistry, Karachi.
She did 1½ years postdoctoral research work with Prof. A.P. Davis, School of
Chemistry, Cantock’s Close, Bristol BS8 1TS, University of Bristol, UK. Her topic of
research was “Synthetic Lectins to Tools for Glycobiology”. During her stay she
developed new synthetic receptor. During her stay in UK, she has been awarded
postdoctoral scholarship of Higher Education Commission, Pakistan.
After completion of postdoctoral studies, she returned to Pakistan and joined her parent
institute PCSIR Laboratories Complex, Karachi in 10th April, 2012 as Senior Scientific
Officer. She is still working in PCSIR at the same position. She is heading a group of two
(2) scientists. During this position her research work mainly depends on synthesis and
isolation of natural products. The isolation studies based on the bioassay directed
isolation of natural products from indigenous medicinal plants like certain species of
genus Euphorbia, family Compositeae, Solonaceae cucurbitaceae, Malvaceae etc. The
bioassay directed isolation studies yielded series of alkaloids, terpenoids, saponins and
flavones etc. Many of them are biologically active, having antimicrobial, antiviral,
hypocholestamic, hypoglycemic and enzyme inhibiting activities.
Dr. Sadia Ferheen has developed many processes out of which the following have been
leased out to private parties for marketing.
