Write a one-sentence description of this project:
The project "Presentation Center" is designed to create a space where presentations can be
conducted for local residents and tourists. The use of multimedia will enable viewers to be more
intimately involved in the tradition, culture, archeology and environment of the territory of Demir
Kapija.
Instructions: This application form is required. Under each major section or question, add as

(2)Project Summary (max. 2 pages)
Write a short description of the project idea. Sum up community needs and what you plan to do
to address them. List (in dollars) the amount of funds requested from SPA and the minimum
25% raised by the community donated specifically to this project.
Tourism in the municipality of Demir Kapija stands out as a priority area for intervention. The
Municipality of Demir Kapija has great because it is rich in archaeological sites that speak to its
rich history. It also abounds with rich flora and other natural features, such as the beautiful
gorge that lies near the city and the rare eagles that dwell there. As part of the Local
Development Strategy, which was prepared with assistance from UNDP the municipality has
focused on driving tourism in the area.
The town of Demir Kapija currently has a museum (Museum Demir Kapija) that serves as a
focal point for this strategy. Since opening last year (2010) the museum has averaged over 150
visitors per month. The archives of the Museum of Demir Kapija include audio and video
recordings of over thirty-six hours, tracking materials of flora and fauna, ethnology and

archaeological sites of this region. But since no such center for presentation exists, there is no
way to have this already documented material presented to the public. The implementation of
this project will enable the promotion of the previously mentioned resources within the museum.
Because the ability to reach these archeological, cultural, speleological, and biological features
is extremely difficult due to the absence of signs, trails, and other means of access for tourists
the visual presentations will provide an easier way for them to experience and enjoy the wealth
of the area. This will be done through a number of different strategies. First, by presenting the
existing thirty-six hours of documentary material, as well as development of another film.
Second, additional films regarding various other aspects of the municipality will be developed
throughout the lifetime of the facility. These films/presentations will all have an English language
component. If it is a narrated video, there will be English subtitles, and if it is a live presentation,
there will be a translator on hand and/or a printout of the presentation in English. In addition, a
member of the Museum staff will be paid to present the material during the opening of the
Presentation Hall. Thereafter, Museum staff will present the various films when tourists arrive at
the museum as well as at pre-scheduled times.
Third, in order to ensure the effective utilization of the presentation center as a means of
driving tourism in the municipality the Museum of Demir Kapija will provide printed flyers,
advertise in print, electronic media, and television. Additionally, flyers and other materials will be
distributed to local wineries through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOA) and
thus tourists that visit wineries will be informed and will have the opportunity to visit the museum
and attend presentations. Fourth, all promotional materials as well as information gleaned from
presentations will be displayed in the currently existing Info Park (a SPA project from 2011). The
Presentation Center will be open to all visitors from Monday to Sunday during office hours at the
museum as well as upon request. Finally, after each presentation, attendees will be questioned
regarding the quality of the presentation and how it might be improved upon.
Within the museum, is space that is currently used as an art gallery and has the ability to be
used for installing multimedia equipment to create a presentation center. In particular, the
project envisages the installation of the following equipment:



DVD player with speakers and LCD TV to display the recorded material;
Personal computer for processing of the recorded material, preparation of presentations
and archiving;.
Chairs for guests attending the presentations.
The total project value is $3,469 with Peace Corps providing $2,237 and the Municipality
of Demir Kapija providing $1,232. With the funds from the Peace Corps we will procure the
following equipment for the Presentation Center: chairs, DVD player, speakers, LCD TV and
personal compute. The funds of the municipality will be allocated for presentations that will be
implemented as part of the project, field surveys and preparation of materials for a presentation
on "Demir Kapija as a repository of historical and natural heritage of Macedonia.”
(3) Local Language Summary (Macedonian or Albanian Language) (max. 2 pages)

• DVD со звучници и LCD телевизорот за прикажување на снимениот материјал;
презентации и архивирање;

Other community features relating to the projects:
The area around Demir Kapija is rich in archaeological finds. So far, 16 archaeological
sites have been discovered. One such archaeological site is "Prosek." It represents an old city
neighborhood which was located in this region which had a particularly important strategic and
military position in past eras. Also notable are Markov City and Fortress-Strezov City, on the left
side, the right side of the Vardar river. The inside the fortress acropolis of Markov City is built of
large limestone Kvaderi and was used many centuries before the Roman domination. Raised in
the Archaic period, though the technique and the character of the fortress show Paionian
influences. The main and biggest fortress with a complex architectural and architectural
structure is known as Kale-Strezov City. The city had two acropolis’, from Justinian's time, with
additional repairs in the Middle Ages. Ramniste which was an established settlement from the
Iron and Hellenic period is located south of the Monastery area about 500 meters by air on the
elliptical plateau of the highest hill levels.Source of this information: 2002 census.
(5) Needs Assessment (max. 1 page)
Explain the current situation in your community. Why does your community need this project?
What methods did you use to figure out your community's needs? (e.g., Surveys, focus groups,
community meetings, informal or formal interviews, etc.) What did you find out? (Please include
any data you may have collected.)
Given the wealth of natural resources in the municipality, the abundance of archeological
and speleological sites and the presence of rare animal species, tourism was identified as a
priority area for development in the Municipality of Demir Kapija in the strategic plan (Strategy
for Local Development of the Municipality of Demir Kapija 2008-2013 2.2.3 Priority area 3).
However, currently access to the archeological sites is extremely difficult. Traditional
dancing and music are limited to holidays and performances. Rare eagles can only be spotted
by seasoned ornithologists, and caves are remote and inaccessible to the elderly and
handicapped. In addition, information displayed in the museum is limited to static displays of
found objects. Visitors are unable to fully experience and appreciate the wealth of this area. The
fact that the museum currently possess over thirty-six hours of video presentations on the area
but has no way to display them makes the situation sadly ironic.
In order to develop this area, the municipality wants to improve the quality and
availability of information. Through a series of informal interviews with 100 local residents
including local winery operators and tourists, the municipality has determined that development
SPA Application Forms - 2012
5
of a presentation hall would address these issues and help to drive tourism in the area. In
addition, on Thursday May 17, 2012 Patrick Tostevin, curator of the Ribchester, England
Roman Museum met with the directors of the Museum Demir Kapija. During the informal
meeting, Mr. Tostevin, who specializes in museum development, spoke about the importance of
a “narrative” in engaging visitors. This “narrative” makes the static objects more personal.
Presenting the cultural traditions, archeological materials, natural beauties and rarities that are
in the territory of the municipality through multimedia presentations will help to create this
“narrative” bringing visitors closer to the artifacts and making the overall experience more
appealing.
To increase cooperation between the various tourism related industries in the
municipality and the region, the Museum Demir Kapija has signed MOA’s with two local wineries
Popova Kula and Elenov, as well as the Tikvesh Wine Route, a Non-governmental Organization
founded to develop wine tourism in the Tikvesh region. These MOA’s stipulate that, among
other things, both parties will mutually advertise for one another amongst their patrons. In
addition to creating a collaborative environment, these agreements also serve to drive tourism
to each of the locations. The previous SPA grant “Info Park” will also be utilized to help drive
tourism by advertising for both the museum and individual presentations as well as the
information conveyed during presentations in the facility.

(10) Feasibility (max 1. page)
Describe potential problems you could face and how you will address them (add rows as
necessary):
Potential problem
Security in the equipment facility
Damage to equipment in transit
Damage of equipment by the museum staff
Theft of equipment
Loss of interest by community presentations
Issues arising with cooperation between local
wineries and the museum
How you will address or mitigate this problem
The facility or educational multimedia space is
under video surveillance and is within the
school where there is a protection supervisor.
The company from which we purchase the
equipment is responsible for safety in
transport equipment.
Since they will hold a training on how each
function of the equipment employed in the
museum Demir Kapija is operated, the
likelihood of damage to equipment by
employees is very small. In the case of a
damaged piece of equipment, it will be
repaired by the municipality of Demir Kapija.
The space that is provided, is under complete
video surveillance. If you come to plunder a
piece of equipment, with the help of video
surveillance it will be recorded and it will be
reported to the authorities which will allow for
a quick resolution to the crime.
If we notice that the community loses interest,
we will take steps to address the issue. We
will conduct informal interviews with
individuals from the community. Based on the
feedback from these interviews, we will make
adjustments accordingly.
If issues arise, the MOA’s contain procedures
for amendments which will include meetings
between the two parties.
