BUDDY
Since 2010, taking a Best Practice from Group HR and some of the successful Tata
ISES internships of the past two years, we are requesting that a BUDDY be identified
for the Intern by the Company. The BUDDY should be a young person who is willing to
be friends with the Intern and help him / her find their feet; have time to spare to
guide and advise the intern on arrival; help sort out the admin issues that can seem a
huge hurdle to young Interns in a new country; advise on sightseeing, in-city travel,
cultural norms, company regulations, or just where to find bottled water or SIM cards
or internet connectivity; help translate in day to day situations; empathise and be
helpful. The Buddy should preferably not be a CS team member.
Contact details of Buddy.
LOCATION
BACKGROUND
KEY
DELIVERABLES
Kolkata, West Bengal
Introduction: It is often assumed that length of hospital stay is one of the
factors that contribute to health care associated infections. However, the
extent of this problem is not known. It is also not clear to what extent other
medical factors such as co-morbidities and primary medical problem
contribute to infection rates. It is also not known to what extent infection
contributes to prolonging hospital stay.
Hypothesis: Longer length of hospital stay increases health care associated
infection rates.
Study design: Prospective observational study
Sample size: 100 patients (http://www.stat.ubc.ca/~rollin/stats/ssize/b2.html
Key Deliverables (as you see them at this stage. The detailed Key Deliverables can be
fine tuned during the Induction at the location and will be noted into the Tata ISES
Intern Appraisal Form during the 1st week of induction at the location.)
Method: 200 in-patients in an oncology hospital in eastern India (Tata Medical
Center, Kolkata) would be observed over a 4 week period to assess health care
associated infection rates (hospital associated pneumonia, ventilator

associated pneumonia, catheter associated urinary tract infection, central line
associated blood stream infection). A intern would be assisted by a
doctor/nurse in data collection. Standard definitions of infections would be
used to identify cases. Comparison about infection rates would be done for
patients with similar medical conditions (similar surgery, cancers).
Study outcome measures:
1.
Average length of hospital stay and range
2.
Infection rates (HCAI) during hospital stay
3.
Correlation between LOS and HCAI rates
4.
Infections contributing to increasing LOS
