Introduction to Macdonald Campus
The Macdonald Campus of McGill University is located on the part of Montreal Island
which is called the West Island. Established in 1905 by William C. Macdonald, after two
years of planning and construction, Macdonald Campus officially opened its doors in
1907, in Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue. In 1943, John W. McConnell, a well-known business
man and also a newspaper publisher, purchased an adjacent 1,380 acres farm and donated
it to Macdonald College, totalizing its size to 1,600 acres (6,5 squared kilometers). At its
beginning created to teach agriculture, the campus became the Macdonald Campus of
McGill University in 1972, now offering
many different university programs. In
1981, McGill University leased a portion
of the campus to the newly-created
CEGEP John Abbott College, which
permanently purchased its portion in
2002. On September 26, 2006, the
Campus was celebrating the centenary of
its opening.
LIFE IN RESIDENCE
Airport to Residence
Upon arriving in Montreal at the Pierre Elliott Trudeau Airport in Dorval there are two
ways of getting to the Macdonald Campus – either by taxi or bus.
Taxi
The average taxi ride from the airport to the campus is about $40 and would take
approximately 20 minutes. Taxis can be found just outside the ‘Arrivals’ area of the
airport. If you take a taxi, be sure to tell the driver that you want to go to the Macdonald
Campus in Ste-Anne de Bellevue; otherwise you may be taken to the downtown McGill
campus.
Bus
The cost is $3.00 (exact change only) and you must ask the bus driver for a transfer
ticket. Just outside the airport, you will find the bus stop for bus number 204 (buses come
every 30 minutes approximately). Take the bus to the Dorval circle stop and then take bus
number 211 (comes every fifteen minutes) or 221 (express bus that runs during the rush
hours of the day). However, make sure the bus is going to Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue and not
downtown Montreal. The Macdonald Campus is the last stop (total time about 35
minutes).

Residences – Laird Hall and EcoResidence
Laird Hall Residence
In the Laird Hall residence, the student’s room includes a desk, a chair, a bed with
linens, shelving above the desk, dresser with drawers and a mirror, storage closet..
In Laird Hall, each floor has its own common kitchen that is shared by all students who
live on the floor. The kitchens come equipped with multiple refrigerators, stoves and
microwaves. Students are given a mini-locker for which to store their cooking supplies
(pots, pans, dishes, etc) and there are many
tables and chairs for students who wish to eat in
the adjacent dining area. Also on co-ed
undergraduate floors, there is a common TV
room, separate washrooms for males and
females. There are also laundry facilities on
each floor. .
All the common areas are maintained on a daily
basis by the cleaning staff; however, we are
expecting that the residents be respectful of their
environment, especially since they share this
environment with a lot of other residents.
Ecoresidence
In the EcoResidences, the student’ room includes a bed (the students must supply their
own linens), a desk, a chair and 3-tier dresser.
In the EcoResidence, whether it be a duplex (2
rooms) or a sixplex (6 rooms), both types of
housing are fully furnished. . Microwave and
toaster are not supplied. There are two laundry
rooms in the EcoResidence area that are at the
students’ disposal and are run by a money
laundry card. Students are responsible to clean
up their units. - There is no cleaning or linen
service available.
What to bring with you to residence?
In both Laird Hall and the EcoResidence, certain items are essential. Kitchen supplies are
primarily essential in both residences. Pots, pans, kettle, coffee maker, plates, glasses, etc.
are all needed, however, the students are not allowed any items that would be considered
‘fire hazards’ in their rooms: this includes hot plates and microwaves. In Laird Hall we
4
suggest that students bring, their own bar size refrigerator (5 cubic feet maximum) . You
must bring anything necessary for the bathroom: towels, soap, etc. A desk lamp is
suggested as it is not supplied. Optional items to bring would be an extra pillow and a
comforter. In the EcoResidence, bed linen is not supplied, therefore students are
responsible for their own bedding materials. A computer room is available in the Laird
Hall basement if the student does not own a labtop and/or computer

Laird Hall
This hall of Residence made possible through the generosity of the friends and graduates
of McGill University in the 1956 McGill fund campaign is named Laird Hall in
recognition of the contribution to Macdonald College and McGill University of Dean
Sinclair Laird, M.A., B. Phil, D.PAED, LL.D. who served as professor of education and
director of the school for teachers from 1913 until his retirement in 1949.
The hallways
In Laird Hall, there are two wings in the
buildings. There are the floors 1A, 2A and
3A, which are mostly for undergraduate
students, and there are the floors 1, 2, 3, 4 and
5, which are smaller floors with less people
and which are mostly kept for graduate
students. On the graduate floors, there is
approximately 20 people who shares the
common areas, while on the undergraduate
floors, there is approximately 60 people
sharing the common areas.
21
The rooms
The following picture is a double room. The other side of
the room is the same size than the portion on the picture.
Also, what we do not see are the closets. There is a large
area of storage in the room. The white blankets and pillow
case are furnished and are already on the bed when the
student move in, but the extra red blanket has been brought
by the student. Also, the lamp is not provided in the room. .
The extra blanket and the lamp are things we recommend
that students bring with them in residence. The student is
also allowed to have a small fridge of approximately five
cubic feet in his room, instead of sharing the common
fridges with the other residents on his floor.
22
The kitchen
Each floor has its own kitchen. The kitchen on the bigger floor consists of four stoves,
four fridges, four sinks, and garbage cans. Every resident has to bring his own cooking
gear and dish soap. After each meal cooked, students have to clean their dishes and put
everything back in order.
23
The dining room
The dining room is annexed to the kitchen.
You also find in the dining room a row of
lockers. These serve to put your cooking
gear. The lockers are not assigned, the
residents pick the locker they want, and they
bring their own padlock to lock it.
The bathrooms
On each floor, there is a washroom.
On the mixed floors (2A and 3A),
there are two washrooms, one for
men and one for women. All the
common areas are maintained by
the staff maintenance.
24
In the washrooms, there are showers, as
well as bathtubs. They are all separated
by curtains.
The laundry room
There is also a laundry room on each floor. When the residents move in residences, a
magnetic laundry card is
given to each student. The
students load it with
money with a machine in
the Laird Hall entrance.
The cost is $1.75 for a
regular wash, and $1.50
for the dryer. In the
laundry room, you will
also find an iron pan to
iron your clothes.
25
The living room
As well, there is a common living room on each floor, with couches and television with
cable.
26
Room Christine Gagnon
This room bears its name
in memory of Christine
Gagnon, a graduate
student at McGill
University, who in 1996
was selected to present her
research in the AIN (now
ASNS) Graduate Student
Competition at the
Experimental Biology
meeting and in the CSNS
Graduate Student
Competition at the CFBS
Meeting. She deceased in
a tragic accident.
It is a living room where
residents like to gather
together to have a good time.
You can find a pool table, a
baby foot table, a television
and many couches in this
room.
27
Laird Hall lobby
In the lobby, access to wireless internet is free. There are armchairs and couches, a table,
a photocopier and vending machines. Also, the mailboxes of the Laird Hall residents are
in this lobby. Lobby is only available to Laird Hall residents.
28
The study room
Laird Hall also offers a study room where
students can study and do projects in
quiet and calmness. This room is located
in the basement of the building, near the
room Christine Gagnon.
The lab
Also in the basement, there is a
computer lab. There are many
computers available, but there are no
printers. To print your papers, you will
have to go to the campus library.
There is a limited time that students
can use the computers, and during midsemester, this room is very busy and it
will be hard to find a free computer. It
is better to own a laptop.
29
Ecoresidence
The EcoResidence is without a doubt, McGill's most innovative of residences. From the
shell of an old residence, the EcoResidence was created out of almost completely
recycled materials. The 100-student complex of duplexes and sixplexes offers a beautiful
environment..
The Ecoresidence offers apartments shared by six persons, and apartments shared by two
persons. As well, there are two laundry rooms at the Ecoresidences.
30
The kitchen
This picture is one of
a kitchen in a
sixplex. The kitchen
provides the
residents with one
fridge, one oven, a
table set with six
chairs. The residents
have to bring their
own micro-waves
and toasters.
31
The dining room
The dining room in the sixplex.
The dining room in the two-plex.
32
The living room
These are the living rooms in the
apartments. In the duplexes, there is only
one living room. In the sixplexes, there
are two living rooms, one on the first floor and one on the second floor. The television is
not provided in the apartment, you have to bring your own television.

The bedroom
34
Each resident of the apartments
has his own single room. In the
Ecoresidence, no blankets are
provided. Therefore, the resident
has to bring everything. The only
things that are furnished are the
bed, the mattress (with no
sheets), the desk and a chair. If
you want to bring a desk lamp, it
would be an excellent idea.
