ITT WWW WINS MOGDEN TREATMENT WORKS CONTRACT
ITT Water & Wastewater has been awarded the aeration element of Thames Water’s AMP5 contract
for the extension of its Mogden Sewage Treatment Works by Black & Veatch.
Mogden, in Twickenham is one of the largest sewage treatment works in the UK, and serves around
1.9 million customers.
The extension is part of a £675m programme to upgrade London's five major sewage works so they
can treat more waste, preventing them becoming overloaded in rainfall and improving the quality to
which sewage is treated, to further improve river water quality.
The Mogden project involves the installation and commissioning of a new process stream at the
treatment works, including primary settlement tanks, secondary biological treatment and final
settlement tanks. Sanitaire Gold Series Diffusers together with Flygt mixers and pumps will be
supplied by ITT WWW.
A crucial factor in the award of the contract was the availability of the recently launched Sanitaire
Gold Series Diffuser, a high efficiency fine bubble diffuser for aeration applications with a
requirement for lower energy costs. It is specifically designed for ease of installation and provides
lower operational costs through reduced airflow and pressure rates, which subsequently reduce
blower absorbed power.
Duncan Leathley, General Manager of the Projects team at ITT WWW, commented: “Thames
Water’s design and construction partner, Black and Veatch, was looking for ways to bring greater
innovation to the project and deliver lower operational costs and long-term sustainability to Thames
Water.
The Sanitaire Gold Series offered a very efficient and sustainable solution as it can
demonstrate lower power consumption than other fine bubble diffused products.
The Sanitaire Gold Series Diffuser will be used in collaboration with a high speed centrifugal air
blower system, which will result in lower energy consumption at the Mogden works during the
running of the aeration, activated sludge plant.
Duncan continued: “Mogden STW is an outstanding opportunity to demonstrate ITT WWW’s
capabilities in utilising high efficiency technologies to produce long-term, sustainable, low carbon
and low energy solutions for the water industry.”
