Instructor: Richard O’Riley – Valhalla HS
Required Text: Mundo 21, 2nd Edition
Other Required or Supplemental Materials: Student Workbook
Course Description
This is an intermediate level offered to students who have completed four years of Spanish here at Valhalla High School. Emphasis
will be placed in developing linguistic and well as communicative competencies in Spanish, based on readings of a literary and
cultural nature. The textbook, workbook, audio and video used provide students with a wealth of opportunity to interact with
authentic materials.
Learning Outcomes, Objectives and Measurements
As noted by the authors of the text, the materials used in this course are designed to broaden students’ knowledge of the 21 countries
that comprise the Spanish speaking world. The units are geographically organized and the lessons focus on individual countries. By
using the text specific video and audio materials, students will also be able to further develop their speaking, listening, reading and
writing skills while continuing to emphasize communication within a cultural context. The readings are also designed to enhance the
use of critical thinking skills by engaging students in activities involving analysis, synthesis and evaluation of a variety of literary and
cultural topics within the scope of this course.
