1.
CASA volunteers are to take twelve (12) hours of on-going training annually, of which 3 hours must
qualify as GAL training under Ohio Supreme Court Rule 48, noted as such below: *Rule 48.
2.
Trainings in BLUE are especially recommended and are organized by CASA.
3.
Submit your training certificate to Colleen in the CASA office for any training not sponsored by
CASA so that we can give you credit towards your required annual training.
4.
LCCS Note: If you miss more than 15 minutes of any training at the Lucas County Conference and
Learning Center, you will not be given a training certificate. Arrive on time!
5.
Volunteers will not be reimbursed mileage incurred in attending trainings outside Lucas County.
6.

Description: Methamphetamine manufacture and abuse has rapidly spread across the state of Ohio. Due to
the complexity and hazardous nature of methamphetamine-related activities, it is imperative to keep personnel
aware of the indicators and dangers associated with it. By understanding how to identify methamphetamine
laboratories and the materials related to its manufacture and use, employees will reduce the chances of injury
and liability. In addition, personnel will understand the urgent need for removal of children found in a
methamphetamine environment, as well as the need for rehabilitation programs for their parents.

Description: Personnel may encounter children and families that have been exposed to unstable
environments or addiction caused by methamphetamine. Attendees will understand the complexity associated
with the removal and management of those persons who have been affected. In addition, personnel will be
trained in advanced recognition, safety, how to properly document methamphetamine-related incidents, and
how to coordinate multi-disciplinary investigations.

Description: Domestic violence can be defined as a pattern of coercive control to obtain power over
another individual. Domestic violence not only affects the family unit, but also society as a whole. This
workshop will address dynamics that occur in families when there is domestic violence, how children are
impacted, why victims stay in these relationships, domestic violence law, and safety planning. Other topics
include assessment, intervention and interviewing techniques. Participants will leave with a greater
understanding of domestic violence dynamics and ways to support families in case planning.

Human Rights. She believes that the fashion industry’s global scope positions it perfectly to find and promote
solutions to problems like fair pay, safe workplaces, women’s health, self-esteem, diversity and
environmental sustainability. Abiola is the found of “Stand Up for Fashion” which is a global campaign
harnessing fashion’s energy, reach and influence to change the industry and the world for the better. She is a
graduate of both the Columbia University School of Journalism and Sciences-Po Paris.

Description: Developed by the Ohio Domestic Violence Network and Ohio CASA, the objectives of this
workshop are to re-establish a foundational understanding of domestic violence dynamics; explore the
interaction of domestic violence and parenting; better understand batterers’ control tactics used against
intimate partners, child witnesses and systems’ professionals; strengthen the ability of CASA volunteers to
assess for impacts of DV on family members, protective factors, risk and lethality; and strengthen CASA
volunteers’ ability to apply the relevance of battering and trauma to decision-making in
dependency/neglect/abuse cases.

boundaries that work both to their benefit and yours. Boundaries with Teens shows you how. Gain insight and
guidance to help your teens take responsibility for their own actions, attitudes, and emotions, and gain a
deeper appreciation and respect, not only for you, but also for themselves. We will discuss how to: Deal with
disrespectful attitudes and impossible behavior in your teen. Set healthy limits and realistic consequences. Be
loving and caring while establishing rules. Determine specific strategies to deal with problems both big and
small. Boundaries with Teens can help you establish wise and loving limits that make a positive difference in
your adolescent, in the rest of your family, and in you. This class is based off the work of Dr. John Townsend

Description: The use of synthetic drugs has exploded in popularity since 2008, when the DEA first
encountered their recreational use. What are they and why are they so popular? This workshop will
explore what is known about the recent phenomenon of synthetic drugs – including the effects the
user is looking for – and will identify the ingredients, health concerns, and trends, as well as the
reasons it is so difficult to keep these substances illegal and off the market. The workshop will also
include a section on how synthetic drugs can, and do, have a place in drug treatment with
Suboxone/Subutex and Methadone. Participants will learn what makes one synthetic drug different
from another.

Description: This two-day training program is designed to help caseworkers assess the needs of
family members in child sexual abuse cases, make appropriate referrals for services, and monitor the
service plan, including deciding when services should end. The program will sensitize trainees to the
needs of family members and effective treatment approaches to meet those needs. Two families will
be followed by way of videotaped interviews through disclosure, assessment, and the treatment
process. Participants will have the opportunity to practice assessment and decision-making skills.

Description: Local TV personality and CEO of Toledo’s Neighborhood Health Association, Doni
Miller, will present on issues that impact women’s health today from navigating the health-care system to
social and cultural pressures. Miller is joined by the Vice President of The Hospital Council of Northwest
Ohio, Jan Ruma, M.Ed., CFRE. Ruma will address current opportunities for women related to the
Affordable Care Act and the expansion of Medicaid.

Description: Millions of people are enslaved around the world today. Half are believed to be
children. Seventy percent of those entering the United States as trafficked persons are commercially
sexually exploited, and many of them are children. U.S.-born children who are commercially sexually
exploited are victims of domestic trafficking. Recent studies place the number of children trafficked
domestically between 100,000 and 300,000. This presentation will define human trafficking, explain
why it is an issue for Ohioans, offer tools to evaluate if you have come into contact with a trafficked
person, and emphasize the necessity of interagency cooperation.

Description: The Arab American National Museum in Dearborn, Michigan is the first and only
museum in the United States devoted to Arab American history and culture. This beautiful museum
brings to light the shared experiences of immigrants and ethnic groups, paying tribute to the
diversity of our nation. To participate in this tour, you must register ahead of time through the
Eberly Center. The trip includes a bus ride to and from the museum, a free lunch and an
audio/visual presentation and museum tours. Accommodations will be made for afternoon

Description: The manufacture and use of methamphetamine is one of the fastest growing challenges for
child welfare professionals. The covert nature of this drug and the hazardous chemicals used to manufacture it
has precipitated unique risk for children across the United States. Methamphetamines are highly addictive and
have led to the creation of a drug epidemic in many communities throughout this country. This workshop will
highlight the increased prevalence of methamphetamine use and offer participants a comprehensive overview
of the risk factors associated with meth use and manufacturing. Moreover, this training will provide
participants with the most evidenced-based treatment strategies for working with individuals struggling with
meth addiction.
