UNIVERSITY OF GUJRAT
RULES AND REGULATIONS FOR MA / MSc / BS / MS / MPhil AND PhD
THESIS / DISSERTATION FORMAT
In pursuance of Section 28 & 29 of the University of Gujrat (UOG) Act (IX) of 2004 the
following Rules and Regulations are prescribed to administer affairs concerning MA / MSc /
BS / MS / MPhil and PhD Thesis / Dissertation format.
1. Short Title, Commencement and Application:
a. These Rules and Regulations shall be called the UOG MA / MSC / BS / MS /
MPhil and PhD Thesis / Dissertation format Rules & Regulations 2013.
b. These shall apply to the students admitted in a Department / Centre / School /
Institute / Faculty / Constituent and affiliated Post-Graduate College of the
UOG.
2. Delineations
In these Rules and Regulations, unless the context otherwise requires, the
following expressions shall have the meanings hereby respectively assigned to
them:
a. ”University” means the University of Gujrat
b. “MA” stands for Master of Arts
c. “MSc” stands for Master of Science
d. “BS” stands for Bachelor Studies
e. “MPhil” stands for Master of Philosophy.
f. “MS” stands for Master’s Studies
g. “PhD” stands for Doctor of Philosophy
h. ”Thesis” means a document encompassing original research conducted by a
scholar following the prescribed criteria of the University for the degree of
MA / MSc / BS, MPhil /MS
i. ”Dissertation” means a document encompassing original research conducted
by a scholar following the prescribed criteria of the University for the degree
of PhD.

j. ”Supervisor” means a qualified faculty member appointed by the DDMPC to
supervise a research scholar in the process of completing his/her thesis.
k. “Internal Examiner” Means; an expert of the subject having MS / MPhil /
PhD qualification, serving in a scale not less than BPS-18 in the department
concerned, appointed by the Departmental Examination Committee.
l. “External Examiner for MA / MS / BS” Means; an expert of the subject
having MS / MPhil / PhD qualification, serving in a scale not less than BPS18 in the department concerned, nominated by the HOD concerned and
appointed by the Departmental Examination Committee .
m. “External Examiner for MPhil / MS / PhD; an expert of the subject with PhD
qualification not less than BPS-19, appointed by the Vice Chancellor from the
panel forwarded by the Controller Examination for the evaluation of the thesis
/ dissertation and to conduct the Viva Voce.
n. ” Faculty / Institute / Centre / School / Department / Constituent College”
Academic entity of the University.
o. ”HoD/Chairperson” means Head of Department/Chairperson / Coordinator of
the Academic Department.
3. General Instructions
University of Gujrat follows following general format for Thesis/Dissertation of MA
/MSc / BS / MPhil/MS and PhD degrees. The authors are advised to read the
document carefully before Thesis/Dissertation write up. The confusion/s (if any) may
be cleared with their Mentor/Supervisor/Director Academics.
4. Plagiarism Policy
The Thesis/Dissertation shall be composed of the original research work conducted
by the student him/herself.
The Thesis/dissertation entire text except the
References/Bibliography/appendixes
shall
be

on
Higher
Education
Commission (HEC) recommended software “Turnitin” and the summery of the same

shall be annexed at the last of the thesis/dissertation with the endorsement of the
UOG Quality Enhancement Cell (QEC).
5. Language
Thesis must be written in English and extensive care shall be taken to make the
thesis/dissertation a scholarly contribution to knowledge. Proper attention should be
paid to such skills as correct spelling, punctuations, sentence formation, capitalization
and proper use of italia.
6. Thesis Binding Colors:
BS/MSc/MA
Black with White Text
MPhil/MS
Dark Blue with White Text
PhD
Maroon with Golden Text
7. Paper Quality and Size:
Thesis shall be submitted on A-4 size paper weighing not less than 80 gram.
8. Page Numbering:
All pages of the thesis/dissertation shall be on the right bottom of the page in format
(Page 1 of 100) except the preliminary pages; before Abstract which shall be
numbered in lower case Roman Numerical (ii, iii, iv ….).
The Title page shall not be numbered.

9. Page Format:
Left margin 1.5 while top, bottom and right margins 01 inch each. The text shall be
fully justified and first line of the paragraph should not be indented.
10. Text Format:
a)
Thesis shall be typed double spaced with Font Size 12, Times New
Roman.
b)
The footnote (if any) shall be typed 1.5 spaced with Font Size 10, Times
New Roman.
c)
No header or footer shall be given.
d)
The long quotation, tables and appendix, reference/bibliography shall be
typed 1.5 spaced with Times New Roman Size 12.
e)
The long quotation shall be typed 1.5 spaced with Times New Roman Size
10.
f) The chapter number shall be right justified, caps locked, Font Size 16, bold,
Times New Roman, Under lined.
g)
The main heading shall be 1.5 spaced with center justified, caps locked,
Font Size bold, Times New Roman, size 14 without any number.

h)
The sub-heading of first degree shall be 1.5 spaced with Font size bold,
Times New Roman, size 14 left justified. The first letter with each word
except prepositions and articles shall be caps locked.
i) The sub-headings other than of first degree shall be 1.5 spaced with Font,
bold, Times New Roman, size 14, left justified with specific
recommended tabs. The first letter with each word except prepositions and
articles shall be caps locked.
j) The headings of the table, appendix and figure shall 1.5 spaced with center
justified, caps locked, Font, bold, Times New Roman, Size 14. The first
letter with each word except prepositions and articles shall be caps locked.
k)
No full stop should be give after any headings. The Sub-heading of
various degrees shall be given numbers (in bold) and tabs as following:
1) First Degree
A) Second Degree
a) Third Degree
I) Fourth Degree
i) Fifth Degree
11. Units and Chemical Compound/technical Names and Abbreviations:

a) The recommendations of “International Unit of Pure and Applied Chemistry”
(IUPAC) for the naming of chemical compounds shall be followed; whereas,
the branching of organic compounds shall be indicated in italic, for example,
n-butanol, tert-butanol, etc.
b) The International System of Units (SI) shall be followed.
c) Binomial nomenclature shall be followed with Italic Font for writing the
technical names of the plants and animals.
d) The internationally accepted abbreviations for example: i.e., e.g., vivo, vitro
etc shall be written in Italic Font. No sentence shall be started with
mathematical letter or any other abbreviation.
e) Tables, Figures (other than graphic presentations) and/or schemes (More than
half page) shall be in 1.5 spaced with, Times New Roman, Size 10 and shall
not be embedded in the thesis/dissertation main text; however, shall be added
as annexed in appendix.
f) Figures presenting data in graphic forms shall be embedded in the
thesis/dissertation main text.
g) Tables shall be prepared in such a way that they could be read and understood
without reference to the text.
h) Appendix for Tables, figures etc. shall be numbered with numerical (1, 2,
3….).

i) If the table is too long for one page type “continued” at the bottom of the first
page and if the table/figure is typed on “landscape” it shall be inserted in
document with untitled side in the binding side.
j) Any explanatory note shall be typed immediately under specified table in
single space with, Times New Roman, Size 10, and Italic, left justified.
k) References shall be given in text as per format notified by the department
concerned.
After the approval of the respective Board of Studies, the
departments shall notify the name of the internally reputed Journal/Society
(for example, Pakistan Journal of Zoology published by the Zoological
Society of Pakistan) for following the writing format of references and
citations in the text and in the bibliography.
l) The Thesis/dissertation shall be observed in following sequences with no
empty page in between.

Introducing the problem and spelling out main objective(s), research question(s) and
hypothesis of the research and provide an adequate background, avoiding a detailed literature
survey or a summary of the results. Do not copies paste the parts of introduction from the
internet or from a book. Use your own words with reference from which the material is
taken. If the sentence is written as such from a book or a published paper, write the whole
sentence in inverted commas or give the reference.
Introduction may or may not be prepared under different headings, which forms the part of

Critical review describes the previous work with references to update the reader about the
current status of research finding in said area. Text should be started from basic to advanced
knowledge, presenting a general synthesis of the known facts on the problem under study,
rather than presenting a summary/abstract of the papers appears in chronological order.
Literature review may or may not be prepared under different headings, which forms the part
of study. It shall not be exceeded than 08 pages.

This chapter shall be described clearly and briefly. Provide sufficient detail to allow the work
to be reproduced. Methods already published shall be indicated by a reference: only relevant

Each result(s) shall discuss in the same paragraph(s). The section shall ot be separated into
two parts of research and discussion. Unnecessary repetition shall be avoided. Precisely
describe the work in running text, duly supported by the data presented in tables and figures
etc. Discussion is the most important part of the thesis, where the results are interpreted with
scientific logic duly supported by the previous studies.
