Bridge to Terabithia
By: Katherine Paterson
Jesse Aarons is a loner and doesn’t have a good
relationship with his own father. One thing Jesse is
good at is running. He has been training all
summer to be the fastest kid in fifth grade. Things
are about to change when a new girl to the school,
Leslie Burke, beats him and the other boys…

Literature Circle Jobs
Directions: The following is a list of “jobs” that you will have for your literature
circle stories. Please understand that you are expected to hand-in high quality
work. Incomplete and sloppy work will be returned.
Artful Artist (AA)
Your job is to draw anything about the assigned reading that you liked: a
character, the setting, a problem, an exciting part, a surprise, a prediction
of what will happen next, or anything else you might think about.
Do any kind of drawing or picture you like.
AA Task Requirements: Include a colorful picture that takes up at least a
half-page and contains at least 3-5 meaningful sentences that describe what
your picture is all about. But Shhhh, it’s a secret! When your group meets, try your best
not to tell what your drawing is (see if you can fool ‘em). Let them guess and talk about it
first. Then you can tell about what part of the assigned pages you drew a picture about.
Character Captain (ChCa)
Your job is to MEET and UNDERSTAND the characters in the story.
Write about their feelings.
 What are their thoughts?
 How do you think they should be acting?
 Are they like you or people that you know?
 Why is the character important to the story?
 How have they changed throughout the story?
 If you could change one thing about this character, what would it be and
why would you change this?
CC Task Requirements: Your character summary should be about a half-page.
Please be descriptive in your writing.
Discussion Director (DD)
Congratulations, you have just been asked to be the leader of
your group! Your job will be to write down three
discussion questions that you think your group would
want to discuss. Your questions should not be found in the
book. For example: “What is the name of the main
character?” With a question like this, there is no discussion.
An excellent example of a discussion question might sound
like this: “Why do you think the main character went to her
friend’s house?”
DD Task Requirements: What you turn in must have three questions and
contain at least two responses on how your group responded to each one.

Clever Connector (CC)
Your job is to find connections between the book and something else. The three
main types of connections are:
1. Text-to-Text Connections: Sometimes a story will make you think of
another book that you have read or heard about.
2. Text-to-Self Connections: Sometimes a story will remind you about
something that happened in your own life such as a birthday party, a
vacation, a pet, a school event, etc. Sometimes, the text-to-self connection
is about an event that happened in someone else’s life such as an aunt, a
friend, your pet, etc.
3. Text-to-World Connections: Sometimes a story will make you think
about something that is happening or has happened in the world. Maybe
the book that you are reading is taking about a class election. That may
remind you that your parents have talked about the upcoming Presidential
election.
CC Task Requirements: Your connection should contain at least 5 meaningful
sentences, and contain references from the book to the connection.
Passage Picker (PP)
Your job is to pick two parts of the story that you want to read aloud to your
group. You may want to find passages that show:
 particular feelings
 new insight to the story
 answer questions you may have had about the story
PP Task Requirements: Be sure to mark the two parts you want to share with
Post-it notes or bookmarks. You will also need to write down on a separate piece
of paper at least three sentences explaining why you chose each passage.. Also
include the pages that these were found on.
Word Wizard (WW)
Your job is to find words that you: don’t know, are hard to pronounce, are funny,
and/or interesting.
WW Task Requirements: You will need to find at least 5 words in your
assigned reading. For each word you will need to: write it on loose leaf, underline
the word, write the correct definition of the word as it is used in the book, and
write down the page number where you found the word. Then when you meet in
groups, it is your job to share your words with the class.

Word Study
Reading Strategy Focus: Word Study
In order to better comprehend what they are reading, good readers will try to find the
meanings of the key vocabulary in the story. Sometimes they may ask someone what a
word means or use context clues to figure out the meaning. Good readers will also look
up the definition.
Your Job: Your job will be to either use the vocabulary words below in a sentence or find the
meanings of the words. Some vocabulary words may have several meanings, so make sure that
your definition fits the way you think it would be used in the story. Please skip lines between
each definition. This work must be done neatly or you will do it over. If there are more than 23 words per day, your teacher may have you work with a partner, discuss them in a group, or
provide the meanings for you.

Bridge to Terabithia
End of Novel Project Choices
The following choices will be due at the end of the novel.
I will give you some time in class to complete this, but you
may have to do some at home.
Building a Bridge
What did the bridge symbolize at the end of the book? Create a bridge and write
down the main components of the story that lead up to the building of the bridge.
Then make sure you fully explain your thinking about what the bridge means to
Jess.
Friendships
Friendship is a very important theme in this story. Write about the relationship of
Jess and Leslie, Jess and his family, and Leslie and her family. What kind of
relationship do you have with your family? Provide reasons why.
Wanted Poster
Design a wanted poster for Janice Avery. Make sure to include:
the $ wanted for her capture, a picture of her with a description
below, and other items that would be important to know in order
to capture her. Also include 5 main events of the story on the back
of the poster.
Diorama
Create a diorama of the magical world of Terabithia. Write down 5 main events
on the back. Then include in writing why Terabithia was important to Jess,
Leslie, and May Belle in the end.
Sequel
Write a sequel to this novel. What will happen to Jess? Will there still be a
“Terabithia”in his life? What relationship will he have with his family? What
events will happen in his life?
Chapter Titles
There are thirteen chapters in this novel. Create your own chapter titles that
would fit each chapter and then write at least two sentences explaining your new
titles.
