We don’t have the time or the money to devote to technological innovations; we are too busy doing the business of our nonprofit, and putting out fires We already have a nice website. Why should we change it? We already have a Donate Now button that links to a 3rd party donation site. We don’t have the e-mail addresses of our donors, volunteers, members, or other constituents We can’t maintain a website We can’t stay on top of the latest technological innovations that might be useful to us, no less implement them Our nonprofit is different because we raise money from large donors (who won’t contribute over the Internet). Our nonprofit is different because we raise money from our members, not the public. Our nonprofit is different because we are more concerned with getting our members to volunteer than raising donations How can we collect and track demographic information on our donors or members? I don’t want my nonprofit’s information shared with anyone. I don’t want donors’ or volunteers’ information shared with anyone. What if a malicious party posts negative ratings or comments about our nonprofit? Internet-enabling our organization requires more than just a working website. What changes do we need to make in our business processes, goals, organization, and other information systems. Our organization is not ready for the Internet. We don’t want to commit to a particular implementation of ephilanthropy just yet, because many more advances are sure to be made. We’re considering having someone (paid developer or volunteer) develop a site for us. Why should we consider NonprofitSite123? Question How can my website really have its own unique look and feel? Answer Your website, created using NonprofitSite123, will differ from any other nonprofit’s website in many ways, including: “Look and feel” – you can choose a NonprofitSite123 look & feel theme, or create one of your own Style sheets – customize foreground and background colors, fonts, font sizes, styles, etc. Menu structure – create your own Website pages Text content – incorporate your own text Images – incorporate photos, graphics, animated images, audio, and video Global vs. page-specific content – a good example of a global image is your logo which you can place in the upper left corner of every page We don’t have the time or Using NonprofitSite123, you can set up your the money to devote to own website in as little as a few hours. We already have a nice If your website has extensive e-philanthropy website. Why should we functionality, is affordable, and easy to change it? maintain, then you may not need NonprofitSite123. However, for most nonprofits that have no site or a brochureware site, NonprofitSite123 offers unparalleled functionality at a very affordable Page 38 Question We already have a Donate Now button that links to a 3rd party donation site. Answer price, and can be easily maintained by nontechnical staff members. This functionality can benefit your organization in numerous tangible and intangible ways. Let’s talk about the pros and cons of these 3rd party donation sites – like Pay Pal, Network For Good, Just Give, Groundspring, and others. The advantage of these sites is that with a couple lines of HTML code and about 5 minutes of effort, you can offer online donations. The typical disadvantages, however, are numerous (note: not all of these disadvantages pertain to all of the 3rd party sites): 1. It is bad Internet practice to kick the user off of your site, especially when it is unnecessary. 2. Once the user gets to the other site, it is no longer branded as your site. 3. On the other site, the user can no longer navigate to other areas of your site – except if he hits the back button a few times. There is typically no navigation bar or menu. 4. There is no shopping cart or gift basket, so the user cannot pay for multiple transactions at a time. 5. With most other sites, donations are simply processed by asking the donor for the amount they wish to donate, and their credit card number. You cannot employ more sophisticated donation processing, like preset donation amounts, targeting the donation to a specific program or service, choosing between a one-time vs. recurring transaction, making the donation in someone else’s name, opting in to your e-mail list, or paying by echeck. 6. What appears on the donor’s credit card statement is not your name but the other site’s name. Page 39 Question Answer 7. Because of this, there is a higher risk of chargebacks – where the donor may not recognize the charge on their credit card statement, since it doesn’t contain your nonprofit’s name. The donor may then dispute the charge with his credit card company. 8. Related to that, the money doesn’t go straight into your bank account. It goes to the other party, and they periodically disburse the funds to you. 9. Because of that, they get the float. 10. Also because of that, there is a risk that you may never receive your money. In case you think that’s a remote risk, consider the following story. Perhaps the largest processor of online donations was a company called Pipevine out of San Francisco. They essentially had 2 bank accounts – an operating expenses account and a sort-of escrow account into which the online donations were placed and out of which these donations were periodically disbursed to the nonprofits. Well, they started having financial difficulties. They dipped into the second account. Things went from bad to worse, and they went out of business. $18 million of donor money never made it to the nonprofits it was intended for! Lawsuits are pending, and people may even go to jail. 11. Most of these services charge fees, sometimes significant ones. And sometimes hidden. 12. Some of these services, like Pay Pal, require your donor to sign up with them – an extra, unneeded step that may deter some donors. 13. The donor can often only pay for donations, not event tickets, e-store purchases, membership dues, etc. 14. You have no control over the privacy and security policies of the other site. Page 40 Question We don’t have the e-mail addresses of our donors, volunteers, members, or other constituents Answer Because of this, your donors’ data may be sold, traded, etc. I have spoke personally with executive directors who can directly trace donors’ spam and even viruses to these 3rd party sites. 15. There is no audit trail. In other words, if 50 donors make donations to you, you have no way of knowing this, other than to trust that the third party will forward the money to you. 16. There are few if any reports for you – on both the transactions that have taken place on these third party sites, and on the people who performed those transactions. 17. In many cases, the donor does not receive an online thank you/tax receipt – either on screen or via e-mail. 18. No ability for the nonprofit to download data 24/7. 19. There is a special problem with Pay Pal: it has a negative reputation for some people. Like the beautiful new home with a giant, pink, plastic flamingo in front, some people will not care, others will think “how tacky”, but no one will say “wow, this is great!”. CharityFinders can recommend numerous strategies for collecting e-mail addresses, including: Add “e-mail address” as a field to all forms and data collection vehicles Send a postcard or other mailing to all constituents which promotes the new website (even before it is live), and asks for e-mail addresses – either with a SASE, or a URL to enter it themselves online Use a site like the following to match email addresses to the charity’s existing database: o www.econtacts.com o www.concentric.net o http://people.yahoo.com/ Page 41 Question We can’t maintain a website We can’t stay on top of the latest technological innovations that might be useful to us, no less implement them Our nonprofit is different because we raise money from large donors (who won’t contribute over the Internet). Answer o www.ussearch.com With NonprofitSite123, it is very straightforward to set up or maintain the charity’s website. The site “administrator” does not need to know HTML, Java, or indeed any programming – they must simply be able to navigate around a standard website, and of course, must have access to all needed information about your nonprofit. CharityFinders aims to be the eyeglasses that provide technological vision to its clients. CharityFinders will investigate new technological developments, evaluate which are potentially useful for nonprofits, and implement those that are both beneficial and cost-justified. Of course, CharityFinders will keep its clients apprised of technological developments, including new features available to clients, and related costs if there are any. The implementation of these features will typically be easy and quick. Just as Internet users are becoming more comfortable providing credit card information online, shopping online, and even making “big ticket” purchases online (e.g., airline tickets, hotels, real estate, stocks, etc.), evidence shows that Internet users are also becoming more accustomed to donating online, and that the amount of those donations is increasing. Even for very large donations that are less likely to be processed over the Internet, NonprofitSite123 offers a number of features to provide such donors with all the information they need, and to establish and sustain an ongoing relationship with the donor. Finally, NonprofitSite123 offers links to a variety of types of online alerts to notify nonprofits of key information regarding large donors – such as when their companies go public, when their stock price hits a certain point, etc. Page 42 Question Our nonprofit is different because we raise money from our members, not the public. Answer NonprofitSite123 offers a compete set of membership administration features, including collection of membership dues and renewals. In addition, members can register online for nonprofit events, even paying registration fees online. NonprofitSite123 offers powerful features to attract volunteers, and to maintain an ongoing relationship with them. NonprofitSite123 asks anyone who performs a transaction on your site for key demographic information, like age, sex, marital status, etc. Of course, all such information is optional. You can then sort and filter by this information. For example, you could send an e-newsletter targeted to seniors by selecting only those users with age > 65. CharityFinders (and all of our clients) adheres to a strict privacy policy. In brief, nonprofit-specific information is only accessible by that nonprofit, and will never be sold. CharityFinders (and all of our clients) adheres to a strict privacy policy. In brief, CharityFinders does not sell or share personal information on its donors or volunteers. Any time an organization requests feedback, particularly if that feedback is made available to the public, there is a risk of negative feedback being included. Some negative feedback is useful, even desirable, since it helps the organization identify areas of improvement and adds an element of believability to the overall set of feedback. The impact of malicious parties posting negative feedback, potentially in large quantities, may be mitigated by: Requiring that only donors or volunteers of an organization may post Page 43 Question Internet-enabling our organization requires more than just a working website. What changes do we need to make in our business processes, goals, organization, and other information systems. Our organization is not ready for the Internet. We don’t want to commit to a particular implementation of ephilanthropy just yet, because many more advances are sure to be made. Even if we have a great website, how can we draw people to it Answer feedback on that organization Limiting each user to one rating and one comment CharityFinders can delete certain pieces of feedback that are clearly malicious Providing the ability to shut off the feedback function if needed (much like a stock exchange can halt trading in a stock if certain conditions are met) Indeed, there is a significant change management component involved in maximizing a charity’s use of the Internet. CharityFinders offers a set of short workshops, customized to your requirements, to help you develop an Internet strategy, implement your site, understand the impact on your organization, develop specific action plans, and even assess impacts on fundraising and marketing efforts. Of course, there is a fee for these workshops. CharityFinders has workshops and consulting services that are specifically designed to help your nonprofit adapt to the Internet. Of course, there is a fee for these workshops. NonprofitSite123 will help you get an early start, and seamlessly implement these advances as they emerge. CharityFinders can recommend many strategies, tailored to your situation, to drive traffic to your site. Here a just a few to consider: Place your URL on everything – letterhead, business cards, all marketing literature, all e-mails, etc. Use your mailing lists to send out news of your new site Create e-mail lists Page 44 Question $ have become tight for our nonprofit in the wake of the economic slowdown, stock market plunge, and the aftermath of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. We must have our website in multiple languages, to serve our constituencies. Can we do that and what's involved? If we wanted a feature that we don’t see here, are there any other options? Answer Use mailing lists and e-mail lists to periodically publicize new features of your site Advertise your website in offline and online publications that cater to your target market Periodically update or add features to your site to encourage repeat visitors; keep your site, especially your home page, dynamic Offer something of value free on your site – for example, e-cards, a report, study results, book, screen saver, etc. Conduct regular surveys or public opinion polls and post the results Host online events of interest to the community you serve – such as an online chat with a celebrity or issue expert Conduct give-aways/drawings for prizes such as membership fees (to your charity), event tickets (to your charity’s events), t-shirts and other promotional items with your charity’s name, etc. CharityFinders agrees. However, this makes the need for raising more funds and lowering fundraising costs even more acute. NonprofitSite123’s ability to let you quickly create an e-philanthropy site has never been more timely or in need. NonprofitSite123 can generate your site in Spanish or other languages (additional fee applies). We recommend that your nonprofit’s content (e.g., mission statement) be translated by hand, though. You have 2 options: 1. CharityFinders will quote you a fixed price to develop any enhancement; because of our low cost structure, we are typically able to implement enhancements quickly and affordably 2. Develop the enhancement yourself, Page 45 Question Tell us about customer support – what's included and what can we expect? Can we share data with Raiser's Edge, Donor Perfect, or other applications? We've been looking at other sites that claim to offer website-building tools for nonprofits. How does NonprofitSite123 compare? We have our own domain name (e.g., www.ournonprofit.org) or are about to register one. Can we use it? Answer and link your CharityFinders site to it; this approach will not be as integrated with the rest of your website as approach #1 You may use the following CharityFinders customer support options: Online help, FAQ, and About CharityFinders section (available 24x7) Live, online assistance (just click for help) (available during business hours) Phone support (available 24/7, but not on a guaranteed basis) Sure. You can import and export data between your website and most donor management systems. This is done with an ASCII file. You control the donors to be included in the file, as well as the data included for each donor. It is not our style to say negative things about our competitors. Nevertheless, we are gratified by the response we have received to NonprofitSite123 by specific nonprofits as well as foundations and e-philanthropy experts. Many of these people have pointed out that other tools suffer from one or more of the following: Expensive (i.e., often 10 to 40 times as much as NonprofitSite123) Require months to implement (vs. hours using NonprofitSite123) Require technical skills/training to implement (vs. none) Not specific to nonprofits Produce a brochure-ware site, not an ephilanthropy site Definitely – we encourage you to use you own domain name. Simply follow our instructions to point your domain name to your new NonprofitSite123 domain name (e.g., www.CharityFinders.com/yournonprofit) – which takes about 2 minutes-and your user will be able to type in or link to your domain Page 46 Question I understand that there is a monthly fee for using NonprofitSite123. The foundation’s 2002 revenue was about $250,000. In April 2003, HBEF realized it faced a severe budget shortfall for the next school year, stemming from California’s projected $38 billion deficit. The foundation calculated that, if the parents contributed $300 per student, they could completely make up this shortfall. HBEF realized that $300 is quite a bit to ask in one lump sum, so they set up their website to accept recurring donations, then suggested that parents set up ten monthly donations (roughly the length of the school year) of $30 each, to be processed automatically – unless, of course, the donor wished to change or stop their donation during the 10 months. HBEF contacted the Los Angeles Times and two local newspapers, all three of which ran articles mentioning HBEF’s website address. HBEF set up their website, including a recurring donation capability, using a tool called NonprofitSite123 from CharityFinders (www.CharityFinders.com). The press coverage resulted in a significant number of donors contributing the requested amount. Some donors have even set up indefinite donations wherein they pledge a specified amount per month indefinitely until they choose to stop the donation. As a result, HBEF raised over $25,000 in online donations within two months – plus much more offline. Additional accomplishments: 1. In the first 1 ½ years since they built their website using NonprofitSite123, HBEF has taken in over $50,000 directly through their website. HBEF’s website also spawned a significant amount of offline donations and other fundraising. 2. $15,000 was pledged through the website and will be collected automatically, most of it within one year. 3. On July 9, 2004, HBEF’s “Surfin’ Hermosa 2004 event” was the lead photo on the front page of the Los Angeles Times. A comprehensive article appeared as well. With a few minutes of Page 52 effort, HBEF was able to quickly post an announcement of the article on its home page, and link to the article. Photo by Carlos Chavez, LA Times Case Study – Nonprofit Gets E-mail Addresses For 100% Of Their Members. Coalition on the Environment and Jewish Life of Southern California (COEJL-SC – www.coejlsc.org) instills a commitment to environmental protection rooted in Jewish values. COEJL achieved the ultimate in email list signup – 100%! They used 3 specific techniques to do this. First, they played the “help us save trees” card by promising to eliminate paper. Of course, they had an advantage, because they are an environmental charity. However, every nonprofit can use the same rationale, though perhaps with not quite as much success. Second, they successfully appealed to their members’ desire to lower administrative overhead costs by pointing out that e-mail would reduce postage, printing, and labor costs. Therefore, more of their membership dues and donation $ would go to the cause, and less to unnecessary overhead. Finally, COEJL told their members that in order to continue their relationship with COEJL, they had to provide their e-mail addresses. Luckily, everyone complied. COEJL has also found out that e-mail and e-newsletters enable the member or donor to easily click to take action to support the organization. Plus, electronic communications can easily be forwarded to friends, family, neighbors, and colleagues – especially if COEJL simply asks members and donors to do so. Allan was previously a co-founder of i-Cube, which had a highly successful IPO in 1998, and was acquired by Razorfish in 1999. i-Cube was profitable from the first quarter, every quarter for seven years. i-Cube helped Fortune 500 corporations develop an IT/Internet strategy and implement it through software/web development and consulting services – somewhat like CharityFinders does for nonprofits. Allan spent 15 years developing mission-critical software applications for Fortune 500 corporations. These included Hertz’s worldwide reservation system, Northrop Grumman’s manufacturing system, and many more. Though his work was exciting and fulfilling, Allan began to crave the opportunity to put his skills to work to help nonprofits better pursue their missions using information technology – specifically the Internet. Allan had many years to think about what philosophies would eventually guide him in his nonprofit-related venture. Chief among these philosophies were: Help nonprofits apply sound management principles to their organizations. Allan wanted to develop a way to help the management of nonprofits use some of the best practices of forprofit corporations to better achieve their missions. Help as many people as possible. Allan has enjoyed helping others on a one-on-one basis (for example, for 18 years hosting foreign dignitaries through the International Visitors Council of Los Angeles, as a Big Brother, and a springboard diving coach), and admires others who do so. However, Allan wanted to figure out a way to help large numbers of nonprofits and the people they serve – thousands or millions of people. Help people to help themselves. "Give a man a fish and he’ll eat for a day. Teach him to fish and he’ll eat for life." Like the philanthropist who helps solve hunger problems not by giving out food, but by helping people to grow or acquire their own food, Allan believes in helping others to help themselves – including helping nonprofits to help themselves and enable those they serve to do the same. Give back to the community. Allan wanted to create a venture that practiced what it preached by being socially responsible and donating a percentage of its revenues to worthwhile causes. Page 56 Allan discovered a tremendous gap between what nonprofits were doing with the Internet to further their missions – versus what they could be doing. Allan had perceived such a gap years earlier in the forprofit world, and i-Cube (along with many other companies) helped many for-profits to bridge that gap by using the web strategically for their competitive advantage. This time, Allan thought he could help nonprofits use the web strategically to further their missions – by offering them a tool they could use to easily build their own websites that would not only offer a lot for users to see, but – more importantly – a lot for users to do. Allan set about to validate his idea. First, he engaged the UCLA Anderson School of Management to survey hundreds of executive directors. Next, he analyzed hundreds of nonprofits’ websites. He estimated that roughly 90% of the approximately 1 million U.S. 501c3 nonprofits had no web site, about 9% had basic "brochure-ware", and around 0.9% had brochure-ware-plus” sites (a brochure-ware site plus a link to a 3rd-party site to collect money, or with only a simple ecommerce capability – typically e-mailing online donation details to a nonprofit staff who must re-key them into a point-of-sale system). Yet, the potential for nonprofits to use the web to improve their fundraising, lower costs, and better pursue their missions was enormous. Allan spent months thinking about what nonprofits could and should be doing strategically on the Internet. Allan’s thinking went like this: A high percentage of nonprofit websites were brochure-ware or little more. Allan thought about the purpose of these sites. The answer was clear – nonprofits wanted their sites to inform people about their organization, to get them excited about it, and most importantly, to motivate people to take action to support their nonprofits. The problem was that even if a website was successful in accomplishing those goals, the result was a website visitor who was motivated to support the organization but had no immediate way to do so. Allan thought that these sites – and their organizations – could be so much more successful if they actually offered visitors easy ways to support the organization online, immediately – through cash donations, in-kind donations, event registrations, volunteer sign-up, membership, planned gifts, investment donations, e-store purchases, and more. Faced with this evident gap between what nonprofits were doing and should be doing on the web, Allan asked, "Why?" The answers seemed almost too obvious: Nonprofits didn’t have the money, time, technical expertise, or IT infrastructure to build and maintain a website that did Page 57 the things they really wanted and needed. Plus, they didn’t want to be distracted from the pursuit of their mission. Many nonprofits were spending large amounts of money and devoting months to developing websites that contained little or no functionality. What’s more, these nonprofits were typically dependent on the individuals or companies that built their sites to maintain them – resulting in unneeded expense and delay to keep their sites up-to-date. Not surprisingly, many sites contained obsolete information. Allan met with several leaders of the nonprofit community. They each agreed with Allan’s assessment of nonprofits’ use of the web, and believed that the tool Allan had, by then, prototyped, showed much promise in helping a large number of nonprofits. They each referred Allan to several other nonprofit leaders, who reacted the same way. Armed with independent validation of his idea, Allan set about to design and build this tool – and named it NonprofitSite123. Two and a half years after starting CharityFinders and beginning the development of NonprofitSite123, the tool was launched in December, 2002. The first few clients were enthusiastic – they could now develop world-class websites in just hours, even if they were small nonprofits. As word got out, Allan was invited to meet with many executive directors, heads of foundations, and other leaders of nonprofit organizations. Allan has been incredibly gratified by their overwhelmingly positive response to NonprofitSite123. He now sees that his dream of helping large numbers of nonprofits to easily use the Internet to further their missions is beginning to come true! Page 58 Our Team Here are a few members of the CharityFinders team: Allan Pressel, CEO/Founder Allan was a co-founder of i-Cube, which had a highly successful IPO in June, 1998, and was later acquired by Razorfish. Prior to founding i-Cube, Allan was a technology strategy consultant at Arthur Anderson and First Consulting Group. Allan holds an M.B.A from The Anderson School at UCLA, and a B.A. from Brandeis University, and attended the London School of Economics and London Business School. Allan has been involved with various nonprofit organizations, including helping to start the annual Challenge For Charity event among leading west coast business schools, a 17-year involvement with the International Visitors Center of Los Angeles, and 3 years as the president of Century City Toastmasters. Allan has conducted numerous public speaking engagements, including presentations on Internet and IT Strategy to thousands of Fortune 500 senior executives at several seminars at Cambridge Executive Enterprises, Hewlett-Packard, and various industry conferences. Allan currently focuses exclusively on presentations to nonprofit organizations and groups, most often on Internet Strategy for Nonprofits. This includes recent speaking engagements at the Association of Fundraising Professionals, Association of Healthcare Philanthropy, Head Start (national conference), Organization of Nonprofit Executives, and California Association of Nonprofit (annual conference). Allan has also done presentations for the management and boards of hundreds of individual nonprofits, with an emphasis on Page 59 helping them utilize the Internet strategically to help further their missions. Page 60 Eddy Aslanian Eddy is currently managing his own investment portfolio using income, equity, real estate, hedge funds, private equity, venture capital and angel investing. He has long-standing relationships with all the major brokerage firms including Merrill Lynch, Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs, CSFB/DLJ, Citicorp/SSB, Deutsche Bank, etc. He is well-versed in all aspects of finance including portfolio management through asset allocation and balancing, tax minimization, asset protection and estate planning. He is writing a comprehensive book as a roadmap to the financial world. From 1992 to 1999, Eddy was the founder of International Integration, Inc. (i-Cube), an Internet consulting and application development service firm where he occupied positions in all business divisions and at all levels of the company. i-Cube leveraged technologies such as the Internet, Enterprise Application Integration (EAI), client/server, and legacy migration to provide end-to-end e-business solutions to very large corporate clients such as Boeing, Citicorp and the U.S. Navy. iCube was started on a shoestring in 1993 with the goal of achieving organic annual revenue growth of over 100% with industry leading net profit margins of 18% without external funding. After a successful IPO in June 1998 (NASDAQ:ICUB), i-Cube focused on acquisitions culminating in a merger with Razorfish (NASDAQ:RAZF) in a $650MM stock swap, to create a digital information service firm with over $100MM in revenue, 1,000 people, and eleven offices in seven countries. Razorfish reached market caps of $9B in less than 2 years before being itself subsequently acquired. Prior to i-Cube, Eddy was one of the initial seven members of Individual, Inc., a provider of customized news delivered over the internet based on Artificial Intelligence applied to Natural Language Processing. From 1989 to 1992, Eddy developed all of the company’s Page 61 internal information systems as well as a product that accounted for over 60% of the annual company revenue. The company went public in 1993 (NASDAQ:INDV) and was later acquired by PointCast. Eddy holds a B.S with High Honors and a M.S in Computer Science at Brandeis University with an additional two years of post-graduate research in the field of data compression. Page 63 Vane Warner Vane Warner is a sales representative for CharityFinders in the Texas area. He is a retired SBC employee, who spent thirty-two years in computer and network support for hundreds of other employees. After leaving SBC, Vane spent two years doing technology reviews and other consulting work for various nonprofits in North Texas. It was during this time that he saw the need for an easier way for nonprofits to build and maintain their own e-philanthropy websites. In June 2004 Vane attended a technology seminar for nonprofits, where he learned of NonprofitSite123. Seeing the need and the potential for such a tool, Vane joined CharityFinders. Page 64 Testimonials “Most anyone will find NonprofitSite123 easy to use, and most nonprofits can benefit from it." Richard Atlas, Founder, Atlas Family Foundation, and Board Member, California Endowment “Since we provide a 24/7 “home-away-from-home” for families of seriously ill children, we need volunteers, in-kind donations, and of course, money. Finally we have a website where people can easily give us those things. And I can maintain it myself.” Deborah Levy, Executive Director, Orange County Ronald McDonald House "We never dreamed we could create a state-of-the-art website ourselves. We certainly never expected that the website we created could help us attract donations, recruit volunteers, and build closer relationships with our constituents." David Rosenstein, Executive Director, Coalition on the Environment and Jewish Life "I thought our nonprofit was too small to consider even a brochureware website. Now we have a site that rivals the best nonprofit sites I’ve seen." Joanne Edgerton, Executive Board Member, Hermosa Beach Education Foundation Page 65 Guiding Principles CharityFinders is guided by the following principles: 1. Help nonprofits apply sound management principles to their organizations: CharityFinders helps nonprofits to use sound professional practices and management strategies. For example, CharityFinders’ NonprofitSite123 and consulting services facilitate the development of specific, measurable, attainable objectives for the organization as a whole, or for specific projects, individual employees, and volunteers. 2. Help as many people as possible: CharityFinders tries to assist not just one person at a time, but many – not just one nonprofit at a time, but many. We do this by helping to: o Lower the cost of giving (for donors) and fundraising (for nonprofits) o Provide instant access to information needed for donation decisions, resulting in better-informed donors and nonprofits o More efficiently allocate scarce charitable resources among unlimited requirements o Providing donors and volunteers with easy access to nonprofits that meet their criteria, not just the ones that they or their friends are familiar with, or are in their community, or happen to reach them through marketing efforts o Enabling creative ways of giving – like, recurring donations, donations targeted to a specific program or service, and donations where the donor is automatically listed on the nonprofit’s “Donor Hall of Fame” page – at the appropriate giving level 3. Add value to stakeholders: o Nonprofits: Raise more money Lower fundraising costs Track donor demographics Improve future fundraising efforts Meet specific non-monetary needs (e.g., equipment, software, hardware, volunteer time, etc.) Enhance communications with constituents of all types o Donors/volunteers: Increase confidence in nonprofits’ professionalism, goals, and performance Page 66 Lower donation cost and time Provide easy access to nonprofits, searchable by user-specified criteria Receive ongoing information to make better philanthropy decisions Help people to help themselves: "Give a man a fish and he’ll eat for a day. Teach him to fish and he’ll eat for life." Like the philanthropist who helps solve hunger problems not by giving out food, but by helping people to grow or acquire their own food, CharityFinders believes in helping others to help themselves. In this case, CharityFinders aims to help nonprofits to help themselves, and to better help those they serve. This is accomplished by raising funds, attracting human and other resources, and lowering costs. CharityFinders believes that technology in general, and the Internet in particular, show great promise in promoting this philosophy. Therefore, nonprofits who invest in websites, e-mail, electronic payments, web-based applications, and other on-line services will be rewarded by their use of CharityFinders’ NonprofitSite123 tool and related services, because they will have access to greater fundraising at a lower cost while learning more about their donors. Adhere to industry privacy and security policies: No information will be shared or sold without permission. Arms-length objectivity: CharityFinders operates as a neutral third-party, independent of any specific nonprofit, or political, philosophical, or religious emphasis. All nonprofits are treated equally. Simplicity, backed by power: All NonprofitSite123 website features are user-friendly, so someone with no training can perform all functions the first time – quickly. Also, more powerful features are available at the user’s option. For example, a “quick search” enables users to search for specific nonprofits by entering a few simple criteria (e.g., nonprofit name, etc.). At the user’s option, they may use the “advanced search” screen to specify any of a number of additional criteria (e.g., administrative overhead %, years in business, etc.). Accessibility: CharityFinders’ clients needing customer support can get personalized help online or by phone 24/7. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8.
