Earnings and Productivity Statistics in March 2011
Employees
In March 2011, the total nonagricultural payroll employment, at 6,779 thousand, increased by 29
thousand (or 0.44%) than last month. Among all industries, the service sector had shared 54.45%. In
comparison from March 2010 through March 2011, payroll employees increased by 220 thousand (or
3.36%). The average employment since January 2011 was 6,763 thousand, increased by 222 thousand (or
3.39%) than the same period of last year. The industrial sector increased 4.59% and the service sector
increased 2.41%. Among all industries, the employees increased mostly in manufacturing (122 thousand),
followed by wholesale and retail trade (33 thousand) and construction (12 thousand).
Turnover Rate
The average accession rate within industry and service sectors in March 2011 came to 3.01 percent,
increased by 0.75 percent point than last month and decreased by 0.21 percent than the same month of last
year, while the separation rate of 2.57 percent, up by 0.20 percentage point than last month and down 0.09
percentage than the same month of last year.
The average accession rate from January 2011 to March 2011 was 2.45 percent, down by 0.06 percent
than the same period of last year. Between them, the industrial sector decreased by 0.09 percentage point
and the service sector decreased by 0.05 percentage point. The average separation rate was 2.32%, same as
the same period of last year. The industrial sector increased by 0.12 percentage point, the service sector
decreased 0.15 percentage point.
Earnings
Average monthly earnings (including regular and irregular earnings) per employee at the industrial and
service sector in March 2011 were NT$40,943. Comparing with last month and a year ago, mainly
influenced by the year-end bonus and production bonuses of some establishments granted in last month,
there were 10.88 percent decreasing and 0.49 percent increasing respectively. The average regular earnings
in March were NT$36,612, increased 1.43% than last month and 1.42% than the same month of last year.
The average monthly earnings since January 2011 were NT$56,434, increased by 4.78 percent than the
same period of last year. The average regular earnings were NT$36,479, which increased 1.40% than the
same period of last year. After deflating by the Consumer Price Index increasing rate (1.28%), the real
average earnings raised 3.46% and the real regular earnings raised 0.12%.
Hours of work
The average monthly hours of work (including regular and over-time) for industry and service sectors
in March 2011 totaled to 192.0 hours, up by 53.1 hours than last month and down by 0.4 hours than the
same month of last year. The average working-hour since January 2011 was 171.0 hours, increased by 0.3
hours than the same period of last year.
The industry with the most increasing working-hour than the same period of last year was other
services that reported 4.8 hours increasing, followed by accommodation and food services which showed 3.9
hours increasing.
Labor Productivity and Unit Output Labor Cost
In March 2011, the manufacturing sector's labor productivity index was 129.80 (2006=100), decreased
by 11.87 percents than last month and up by 10.22% than the same month of last year. The manufacturing
unit output labor cost index were 64.77 (2006=100), down by 34.96% than last month and down by 8.17%
than the same month of last year.
The average labor productivity index since January 2011 was 11.05% more than the same period of last
year, while the unit output labor cost index since January 2011 was reported 5.61% decreasing.
