WELCOME

I am pleased to welcome you to the 2nd issue of the PPI e-bulletin. Feedback
from the regional PPI networks favoured this additional form of communication, so
if you would like to make a contribution to the next issue (due in October), please
email: annm.carpanini@wales.gsi.gov.uk. Please feel free to also email this
bulletin to anyone else who might be interested.
PPI NETWORKS

3 Regional networks have now been established throughout Wales. All minute’s,
agenda’s and terms of reference are on the web site

Objectives of each network in brief: N.Wales
To raise the profile of the importance of public involvement.
To provide a forum to share information across organisations.
Develop a directory of initiatives.
Identify areas of good practice, learn lessons from the
implementation of projects.
S.E.Wales
To establish and develop a network to steer, advise and
support PPI.
To work in partnership with official bodies to ensure consistency
and clarity of purpose.
To provide a forum for sharing and developing good practice.
M&W.Wales To provide a forum to share good practice and to learn lessons
from practice.
Training, facilitation and development in PPI.
Provide a supportive network for officers.
USEFUL INFORMATION
 An email forum service to discuss various health issues including PPI is available
for use on the HOWIS Intranet general web site. However if you are interested, I
have come across the following web site which provides a similar service http://www.healthvoice-uk.net. The network exists to help people to have more
of a say in planning and improving services that affect their health, it not only
provides a forum to discuss various issues but provides the opportunity to share
good practice and direct you to numerous reports and publications. Membership
is free to all.

PPI monitor is a monthly magazine, which is an essential tool for patient and
public involvement. Each month it distils news, views, case studies, tool
techniques and opinions to keep you at the leading edge of PPI. If you are

Book recommendation: “Involving patients and the public – How to do it better”,

Medi-notes Ltd produce clear and concise medical information for patients, written
in everyday language about medical conditions, treatments and investigations.

Volunteering for health, a research report produced for the Welsh Assembly
Government in December 2004 by the Wales Council for Voluntary Action
highlighted the research findings into the impact volunteers working in health care
settings have. In particular supporting patient care and the patient experience.

Since the last bulletin an important Welsh Health Circular has been issued. WHC
(2004) 84, issued on 7th January 2005 entitled Shaping Health Services Locally:
Guidance for involving and consulting on changes to health services. For a copy

April 2005 saw the report of a scoping study for the Welsh Office for Research
and Development in Health and Social Care – on the need for a patient, service
user and public involvement research network in health, social care and well


Last month saw the launch of the new strategy Designed for Life: Towards World
Class Health and Social Care for Wales in the 21st Century, which is set to create
world class health and social care service in a healthy, dynamic country by 2015.
The strategy outlines a change process based on clear principles where we will
engage with patients, service users, staff and the wider public in making the

EVENTS

Clinical Audit Patient Panel. A one-day event will be held in Birmingham on 13th
or 15th September 2005 to provide colleagues with information, advice and
practical guidance in involving patients in clinical audit. Please contact Emma

RCN Welsh Board 4th Annual Conference and Exhibition – Exploring Patient and
Public Involvement in Healthcare, attend this conference to discover some
pioneering viewpoints about topical healthcare issues in Wales. Visit

days, October 11th Dinner at St George’s Hotel, Llandudno and October 12th
Conference and Exhibition at the Conference Centre, Llandudno.


Your contributions to the PPI web site on HOWIS http://howis.wales.nhs.uk/ppi
will be gratefully appreciated to make it an effective resource. I would welcome
your thoughts and suggestion.

I would also appreciate if you could assist in bringing the Assembly’s records up
to date by emailing me your most recent PPI action/annual plan, which I can post
on the web site for others to read.

As well as attempting to establish an electronic library of good practice by
receiving contributions to the attached template, I am also keen to create an
electronic library of training aids. If you have any contribution for either library
please not hesitate to contact me.
