Ministry Description:
Standard level Geography is a three-part course. Part one concentrates on the skills necessary for the
interpretation and presentation of geographic data such as maps (including GIS (computerized mapping),
topographic maps, aerial photography and satellite imagery), graphs and statistics. Part one will finish with a
geographic investigation of a topic of interest. Part two looks at issues involving the world’s population,
resources and their management and development of human societies. Part three allows students to
choose two themes for further study.
Course Expectations:
Having followed the geography course candidates will be expected to:
 Demonstrate knowledge of relevant factual information, examples and case studies
 Use and apply geographical terminology
 Demonstrate understanding of geographical concepts and theories through the acquisition, selection and
effective use of knowledge
 Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of spatial processes, patterns and interactions; and be able
to recognize change at various scales and locations
 Recognize and appreciate the interaction between people, place and the environment
 Appreciate and understand the social, economic and political interdependence of peoples
 Understand the use of human and physical resources and evaluate the management strategies involved
 Recognize and appreciate the relevance of geography to contemporary world issues
 Demonstrate knowledge of and an ability to apply appropriate geographical methodologies and
techniques relevant to geographical inquiry

 80% External Assessment
 Paper 1: 1.5 Hours Based on Population, Resources and Development Unit (40%)
 Paper 2: 1.5 Hours Based on Units 2 and 3 (40%)

Homework:
 Homework will count toward your Learning Skills. In addition, you may be asked to Communicate your answers
to the rest of the class which will count toward KU, TI, CO, and/or MC portion of your final grade. In order to be
successful, homework must be completed.
Student Expectations:
 Regular attendance is important. If you miss a class, you are responsible for catching up.
 If absent, a call must be made from home to the attendance office and a note is required upon your return to
school.
 Punctuality is essential.
 You must come prepared to class everyday.
 Notebooks are to be kept organized and up to date.
Deadlines:
 Major tests and assignments will be announced in advance.
 It is the student's responsibility to seek assistance from the teacher when he/she is unable to complete an
assignment due to insufficient knowledge or skill. Be sure to advise the teacher of this difficulty well in advance
of the deadline.
 Some deadlines are negotiable. A few are absolute. Work that is not completed by either a negotiated or
absolute deadline will not be evaluated.
 Chronic lateness in submitting assignments or completing tests, may prevent the teacher from evaluating a
student's ability to demonstrate the course expectations. This may require the student to demonstrate his/her
knowledge and skills within an alternate setting such as summer school.
Missed Summative Assessments:
 Students who know ahead of time that they will miss an assessment are expected to discuss the situation
beforehand with the subject teacher. Acceptable reasons would include school activities, medicals etc..
 Students who miss an in-class summative assessment for an unauthorized reason may lose the opportunity to
complete the task.
 Students who are absent on the day of an assessment for reasons such as illness or suspension are
responsible for:
 The work covered and assigned during the class.
 The handing in of assignments at a time negotiated with the teacher.
 The writing of any missed tests at a time negotiated with the teacher.
 After a legitimate absence, the student is to speak with the teacher within 48 hours upon returning to school.
The student must make arrangements for an alternative date for the missed assessment.
