SCOPE AND RANGE
Leven Ward, Murray Royal Hospital consists of 12 assessment inpatients beds and forms part of NHS Tayside,
Primary Care Division, Perth and Kinross CHP. It is one of three community hospital units, which provide inpatient assessment for individuals with dementia.
The post holder will work as a member of the nursing team within a ward setting.
5.
MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Clinical
 Assist the registered nurse with admission and discharge of patients.
 Deliver patient care under supervision and instruction of the registered nurse.
 Report and record changes in patient’s condition.
 Assist with patient’s transfer to another ward or department and/or as an escort to departments, clinics or
home out with main base.
 Comply and contribute to change for the benefit of patient care.
 Develop advanced skills as required by service, e.g. Phlebotomy, vital signs recording.

Assist the registered nurse to care for the patient’s property according to NHS Tayside policy.

and Safety, Confidentiality of Information, Moving and Handling, Lone Worker Policy, Infection Control,
Data Protection etc.
Work within Staff Governance guidelines.
Assist with maintaining a safe ward environment and reporting any faults timeously.
Exercise good personal time management, punctuality and consistent reliable attendance.
Undertake duties, which fall within their role and remit in discussion with Registered Nurse.
Follows NHS Tayside Policy when handling and learning from verbal complaints in conjunction with
manager and relevant department.

Responsibility for records management: – all records created in the course of the business of NHS Tayside
are corporate records and are public records under the terms of the Public Records (Scotland) Act 1937.
This includes email messages and other electronic records. It is your responsibility to ensure that you
keep appropriate records of your work in the NHS Tayside and manage those records in keeping with the
NHS Tayside Records Management Policy and with any guidance produced by NHS Tayside specific to
your employment.
Examine any equipment prior to and during use as per manufacturers instructions, training and follow
reporting system for faults.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS OF THE JOB
This job requires the post holder to:

On a shift basis exerts frequent physical effort to manoeuvre equipment and adult patients suffering from
mental health problems.
Frequent prolonged physical activity on a shift basis.
To be on your feet for long periods of time.
Frequent Moving and Handling of patients using mechanical aids on a shift basis, including patients who
are unpredictable, i.e. confused, aggressive or agitated.
Frequent hand washing.
Frequent exposure to bodily fluids on each shift.
On each shift frequent exposure to physical and verbal aggression whilst utilising de-escalation/breakaway
and control/ restraint techniques.
Participation in Tayside Primary Care Nursing Observation Policy, involving observation of patient
suffering from Mental Health problems, including challenging behaviour, for periods in excess of one
hour.
Frequent involvement with patients who can display emotive behaviours which can be challenging, e.g.
verbal and/or physical aggression

Remuneration
The terms and conditions of service for this post are those
determined by the NHS Staff Council.
The current salary scale for the post is £16,271 to £19,268 per
annum (pro rata for part-time staff). Placing on the scale on
appointment is normally at the minimum but may be higher
subject to verification of previous relevant service.
Pay points under £21,000 will receive an additional nonconsolidated non-pensionable sum to raise basic pay by a total
of £250 pro rata for part-time staff. This addition will be divided
into 12 equal monthly payments, will cease on 31 March 2014
and will be noted separately on payslips
Hours of Duty
Superannuation
Salary is paid monthly by Bank Credit Transfer.
The hours of the post are 30 per week.
Start and finish times will be determined by the needs of the
service.
Membership of the NHS Superannuation Scheme is not
compulsory but is open to all staff between the ages of 16 and
70 (65 in some instances).
The contributions paid are a percentage of superannuable pay,
which is essentially basic pay excluding, for example, overtime
or travelling expenses.
Contribution rates with effect from 01.04.13 are as follows:

Contributions are subject to tax relief and reduced National
