London, Printed by Bensley and Son, Bolt Court, Fleet Street; Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, and
Brown, Paternoster Row; Cadell and Davies, Strand; and P.W. Tomkins, New Bond Street, 1818. Four
volumes in large quarto. First edition. Unpaged, 13 plans of the galleries in the first volume + 291
steel-engraved images of the paintings of all schools on 125 plates. This is a LIBRARY DUPLICATE
SET. Overall it is in very good condition but n.b.: it is bound in pale brown buckram and has library
stamps on the edges, and on the endpapers. The spines have the titles in gilt letters, and call number
gilt also. EACH PLATE IS PUNCHED with the library’s name and in many cases, this i.d. penetrates
the images; however this is not always so as many plates contain more than one image. There is
occasional light (and sometimes moderate) foxing throughout which occasionally affects the images,
which are dark and clear throughout. There is offsetting from the engravings onto the tissue guards.
The volumes are arranged as: Volume 1, Schools of Lower Italy, 48 images on 25 plates; Volume 2,
Schools of Upper Italy, 67 images on 31 plates; Volume 3, Schools of Germany, Flanders, Holland
etc., 98 images on 36 plates; Volume 4, Schools of Germany, Flanders, Holland etc. cont; Spanish
School. French School, English School, 78 images on 33 plates. Overall, still a very good set and a
record of one of the finest collections of Old Master paintings in England. N.b. Extra postage will be
required to ship this set.
