The World Environment Center
International Environment Forum (IEF)
on the Occasion of its 21st Annual Gold Medal Award
presents a Colloquium on:
“MULTINATIONALS IN DEVELOPING COMMUNITIES:
HOW LEADERSHIP COMPANIES BUILD SOCIAL CAPITAL”
Thursday and Friday, 12 – 13 May, 2005
The JW Marriott Hotel
Washington, DC
AGENDA
The WEC GOLD MEDAL
FOR INTERNATIONAL
CORPORATE ACHIEVEMENT
IN SUSTAINABLE
DEVELOPMENT
is an annual award originated in
1985 to honor a multinational
manufacturing, processing or
service company for its
outstanding corporate
environment, health and safety
(EH&S) and sustainable
development innovation,
performance and policy.
One of the earliest initiatives of
public recognition for industry,
the WEC Gold Medal is among
the most respected measures of
a multinational company's
global commitment and
capability to maintain uniformly
high
EH&S standards and
promote sustainable
development.
From the three components constituting sustainable development’s
triple bottom line, the social one is recognized to be the most difficult
to address. This is particularly the case in the diverse environments in
which multinational companies are operating.
Corporate social responsibility policies from leadership companies
have tried to tackle this issue and some have succeeded in building
constructive examples moving away from corporate philanthropy.
Successful community engagement not only helps companies to
operate in host countries, but also helps understand potential
customers. This in turn enables to multinational corporations to
develop solutions with an appropriate business model and to deliver
real value to the community.
Join us for a special look at recent developments giving full value to
sustainable development’s social component.
Keynote speakers from the U.S. Agency for International
Development and the US Trade Representative’s Office will discuss
the challenges facing international and government organizations in
the implementation of public private partnerships.
Industry case studies will include best practices of members of the
International Environment Forum (IEF), former award-winning
companies and Starbucks Coffee Corporation, named the 2005
Recipient of the WEC Gold Medal Award. Starbucks’ Signature
Contribution upon which the jury based its award is the “Coffee and
Farmer Equity Practices” (C.A.F.E.) program, an initiative enabling
farmer cooperatives to receive above average premium price and
long-term contracts while maintaining environmental integrity.
We look forward to welcoming you in Washington DC!
