SYLLABUS 3182: INTRODUCTION TO CATALAN II

COURSE OBJECTIVES:
Students will gain competence in language and social interacting of:
 The ability to sustains and finishes simple conversations or in more complex
usual conversations with predictable contents.
 The ability to understand and interact in simple and daily exchanges without
much effort.
 The ability to understand and exchange ideas and information about family
questions in predictable daily situations.
 The ability to understand to a significant degree non-specialized radio and
television programs
 The ability to appreciate and use nuanced language at an intermediate level.
This should include the ability to interact and negotiate orally in everyday
situations, and hold basic conversations in more complex professional fields.
 The ability to understand and utilize key grammatical constructions
 The ability to read relatively complex texts in a variety of fields.
 The ability of write on a variety of subjects while not committing many basic
grammatical errors.

All students could obtain a good Catalan-English dictionary or to learn how to use
them from the Internet. Recommended are:
- Catalan Dictionary: English-Catalan, Catalan-English. London: New York:
Routledge, 1994.
- Student’s Dictionary. Per a estudiants d’angles: London: Santillana-Richmond,
2000.
Students will be expected to undertake a private reading of a suitable text. The title
that will be seen in class is:

ATTENDANCE POLICY
Absences will affect the participation grade. Each student will be allowed 3 absences
without penalty. After that, three points from the class participation grade will be
deducted for every non-excused absence.
TESTS
These will include listening comprehension, reading and writing sections, as well as
sections on the structure of the Catalan language.
ORAL TEST
The oral exam will take place in class on the days indicated in the syllabus. It is a 10-12
minutes interview the instructor does with one student at a time.
ORAL PRESENTATIONS
The oral presentations will take place in class on October 3rd. It is a 10-12 minutes
presentation, with 2 minutes of questions for each student.

READING
We will work the language and cultural resources of the compulsory reading. The book
we will read in this level is called La vida de Pau Casals (see bibliography). We will
have a test for the Reading on October 1st.
HOMEWORK
Exercises from the Grammar and Exercise Book and compositions will be assigned.
The tentative schedule of the syllabus indicates when the student has to start and to
finish the assignment. The grammar book will be checked by the instructor during the
tests and will have to be shown at the oral exam absolutely complete. No late
homework assignments will be accepted.
CLASS PARTICIPATION
Since the main source of oral input that you will receive comes from interaction in the
class, your attendance and your active participation in class are essential for success
in this course.
CATALAN HOUSE
Catalan House is the association of students and friends of the Catalan Culture at UF.
Many years ago Catalan House started to share the Catalan culture with the University
community. After a break, the association is back again willing to host social and
cultural activities related to the Catalan culture at UF, working together with the
Catalanistic program. You could meet the group every Friday on El cafè català. You
are very welcome to be part of it!
CULTURAL ACTIVITIES
The module has different Catalan activities that Catalan House (the association of
students and friends of Catalan Culture at UF) and the Program of Catalan host during
Fall 2012. There are other informal possible cultural activities that will be host by
Catalan House during the semester.







National Catalan Day, La Diada, (11th of September), celebration on the
afternoon of September 10th.
Catalan Cooking Night on September 23rd at the instructor’s house.
Exhibition of our work in the Catalan Board on October 12th. The Catalan
Board is on the 2nd floor of Dauer Hall.
La Castanyada, the traditional chestnut fest for welcoming autumn on the last
October week, on the 31st.
Pa amb tomàquet on November 14th. Invite friends!
Christmas Catalan tradition “El tió de Nadal” on the 5th of December, with
Catalan carols, a Christmas performance, food and drinks, etc.
Also, we will meet every Friday to develop our oral language skills with a
conversation group, El cafè català, on at the 5th period, from 11.45 to 12.35
pm. We will meet on the room 240A Dauer Hall and everybody is very welcome
to bring friends.

Academic Honesty Guidelines, Department of Romance Languages and

Academic honesty and integrity are fundamental values of the University community.
An academic honesty offense is defined as the act of lying, cheating, or stealing
academic information so that one gains academic advantage. Any individual who
becomes aware of a violation of the Honor Code is bound by honor to take corrective
action.
Violations of the Academic Honesty Guidelines include but are not limited to:
Cheating. The improper taking or tendering of any information or material which
shall be used to determine academic credit. Taking of information includes copying
graded homework assignments from another student; working with another

Plagiarism. The attempt to represent the work of another as the product of one's
