Introduction
The main purpose of this resource is to list the top ten business-related resources in ten different
subject areas. The subject areas included in this resource are business directories, company
research, industry research, stocks, mutual funds, international business, marketing, product
research, small business resources, and tax information. The compilation of this work is a
combined effort by members of the Business Round Table (BURT) of the Utah Library
Association (ULA).
The listings are given with the title on the first line followed by a brief description of the
resource. The final entry for each resource is a list of the library holdings of all Utah Academic
Library Consortium (UALC) member libraries. The abbreviations used in this volume for the

Dun and Bradstreet’s Million Dollar Directory (print)
Includes basic information (contact information, executives, sales, number of employees)
for 1,600,000 public and private companies in the United States. To be included in the
directory, companies must have 180 employees for a headquarters or single location, or
900 if the location of a company is a branch, or have a sales volume of more than
$9,000,000. Organized by SIC code and geographically.

Ward’s Business Directory of U.S. Private and Public Companies (print)
A good source of information on private companies, Ward’s includes contact
information, size, sales figures, and executive information for more than 114,000 U.S.
companies. The volumes are arranged alphabetically and geographically. The series also
includes four volumes of company rankings by sales, divided by state and SIC and

Lists contact information and the names of officers and executives for 75,000
corporations. Also includes 70,000 biographical sketches of top-level managers.

Mergent Online (electronic)
Includes basic contact information, as well as financial information, for more than 10,000
publicly-held companies. An international archive provides information on 20,000
international companies. The US Company Archive also contains information on
companies that have gone bankrupt in the last several years.

Lexis-Nexis (electronic)
In the Company Profile section of LexisNexis, you can search several business

directories at once. Sources include Standard and Poor’s Register of Corporations,
Hoover’s Company and Industry Reports, and US Business Directory. When you go to
LexisNexis, click on “Business” and then on “Company Profiles.”

This database contains detailed information on more than 13 million U.S. businesses,
683,000 U.S. health care providers, and 1 million Canadian businesses. The modules
available will differ from library to library. A good source for directory information
about privately-held companies.

Thomas Global Register (electronic)
A directory of 700,000 manufacturers and distributors from 28 countries, classified by
11,000 products and services categories. In this directory Thomas publishing has
combined its databases of company and product information from the US, Canada,
Europe, and Mexico and created this global directory available in 9 languages. You must
register the first time and remember your ID.

Thomas Register of American Manufacturers (print)
Provides information on American manufacturers. A good resource for business-tobusiness information needs. Also provides a means to trace a brand name back to its
manufacturer. Some of the holdings listed below are for earlier editions. Current

Thomas Register of Manufacturers (electronic)
You can search the electronic version of the Thomas Register by product, service,
company name, or brand name. You can also narrow a search by state. You must
register to use the website, but the service is free.

A list of businesses, organized by city and yellow pages category. Also includes a list of

companies. Offers access to both "real time" and archival (back to 1993 when available)

The Industry market research reports cover over 700 industries written at the 5-digit
NAICS level and provides key statistics, market characteristics, segmentation, industry

Provides detailed stock information on companies traded on the NASDAQ and other

covering the top and bottom performers of the day.

Euromonitor International Global Market Information Database is an online business

1. ABI/Inform (ProQuest)
A database of scholarly, trade, and popular journals and newspapers relevant to advertising
and marketing. Includes full-text for titles such as: Advertising Age, Consumer Reports,
Sales and Marketing Management, Journal of Marketing, Marketing Science, The Wall Street
Journal, etc. EBSCO’s Business Source Premier database is comparable.

2. Business and Industry (RDS-Gale)
This database is particularly strong in trade journals and industry news and is searchable by
company, product, industry, geography and marketing concept (e.g. market share). A good
source for product news, industry and market research. Tables included in these articles are

3. Mintel Reports
An online database of in-depth reports analyzing market share, consumer profiles,
demographics, and the competitive landscape. An excellent source for understanding what
drives a market and how it’s structured. Mintel contains many international reports, but its
greatest strength is in US and UK consumer markets. Example reports: Leisure Activities of
Younger Adults Without Children, Hispanic Dining Out, Soy-based Food and Drink, and
Baby Durables.

4. Global Market Information Database (Euromonitor)
Euromonitor’s GMID is an integrated online business information system providing
reports on companies, industries, markets and consumer lifestyles for over 200 countries.
Interactive tables and charts make analyzing demographic and market statistics easy.
4,500 market research reports and market size data for over 300 consumer products allows
users to research Breakfast Cereals in France or compare per capita expenditures on toilet
paper in Mexico and Russia.

The most important source of demographic statistics is the US Census Bureau’s free website.
American FactFinder (http://factfinder.census.gov/home/saff/main.html?_lang=en) is the
easiest way to access population, social, economic and housing data from the Decennial
Census, the Economic Census, the American Community Survey, and Population Estimates.
The Economic Census profiles American business every five years, with data broken down
by geography or SIC and NAICS codes. CenStats Databases include statistics on building
permits, county business patterns, and international trade data.

6. Statistical Abstract of the United States (http://www.census.gov/compendia/statab/)
Available in print and from the US Census Bureau website, the annual Statistical Abstract is
a summary of statistics on social, political and economic conditions in the United States
taken from the Census Bureau, Bureau of Labor Statistics, Bureau of Economic Analysis, and
other Federal agencies and private organizations. Includes selected international
comparisons. Earlier editions available from 1878. Serves as a guide to sources of
additional information.

7. Community Sourcebook of ZIP Code Demographics
This print annual provides updated demographic data for every US ZIP code and state, and
five-year forecasts. It also includes a count of business firms and employees, consumer
spending indexes for 20 product and service categories, and a Dominant Community
Tapestry lifestyle segmentation for each ZIP code. Tapestry lifestyle segments characterize a
community’s primary constituent, e.g. “Midlife Junction” and “Green Acres.” Also
available on CD-ROM.

8. Sales and Marketing Management’s Survey of Buying Power
Once a year Sales and Marketing Management publishes a special issue, the Survey of
Buying Power and Media Markets. It features statistics, rankings, and projections for every
county and media market in the US, with detailed demographic information. Its Buying
Power Index (BPI) is constituted of population, effective buying income, and retail sales
data. This information is presented for both Core Based Statistical Areas (CBSAs) and
Designated Market Areas (DMAs). This issue is included with regular subscriptions to Sales
and Marketing Management, and is also available through databases such as ABI/Inform.

9. SRDS (Standard Rate and Data Service)
Available both in print and online, SRDS is a leading provider of media rate and data for the
advertising industry. It catalogs over 100,000 international media properties, detailing

advertising rates, content types, market coverage, and contact information. SRDS is broken
into separate volumes for radio, television, newspapers, magazines, etc.

10. MRI+ (MediaMark Research, Inc.)
MRI+ and the Reporter online database are based on a sample of over 25,000 households.
MRI+ provides information on demographics, lifestyles, product and brand usage, and
advertising media preferences, and includes magazine directory and editorial information
and an advertising cost-planning module. The place to go to find out how many women
who read Cosmopolitan or watch CNN have spent over $200 in the past year on MP3
players.
