February 5 - 9 is Teen Dating Violence Awareness Week
To celebrate healthy relationships and violence prevention throughout the month,
Transitions Family Violence Services is joining with local task forces to bring the
community three special events geared towards teens, young adults, and their families.
"Love Is Not Abuse" Creative Writing Contest for Teens
This contest is open to all writers ages 13 – 19, published or not, regardless of
experience, from Hampton, Newport News, Poquoson, and York County. Entries can be
poems or essays, no longer than one page in length. Only one entry per participant,
please. The Teen Dating Violence Task Force will only consider original essays and
poems written by teens. Possible topics include healthy relationships, how to empower
yourself to avoid relationship violence, “red flags”/ signs of abusers, and experiences
with emotional and physical abuse, sexual assault, harassment, and family violence.

Café Peace Open Mic Night & Award Ceremony
Café Peace Open Mic night is open to all teens 13 – 19 to read their original poetry and
essays on the topics of healthy and unhealthy relationships.
Winners of the “Love Is Not Abuse” Creative Writing Contest will be presented with
their awards the Café Peace Open Mic night.

Father & Daughter Valentine's Dance
To celebrate and promote healthy relationships and strengthen bonds between fathers and
their daughters, the Newport News Domestic Violence Task Force (NNDVT) is
partnering with Transitions Family Violence Services to present a Father Daughter
Valentine’s Dance. The Dance aims to encourage men, women, children, and community
members to recognize the vital role that fathers and all male role models play in
promoting healthy relationships.
We are currently seeking sponsors for this event! If you would like to be a sponsor and
purchase an ad in our Souvenir Book, or if you would like to donate items for our raffle,
